The Aesthetic Of Ruins On The Beauty Of Abandoned...
The aesthetic of ruins can help us understand aspects of interior design in terms of the lack of human
presence indicating elements we might otherwise ignore. To explore this theme, I will examine how
theorists have thought about the aesthetic of abandonment in relation to the beauty of abandoned
structures, beginning with the work of Gordon Matta–Clark, in leading us to rethink our lived in
environment apart from just its visual aspect. Gay Watson introduces the idea of emptiness as a
therapeutic perspective and following this I discuss the origins of beauty in impermanence, non–
selfhood and emptiness. I also analysis beauty existing in ruined buildings that reveals the
relationship between space and human beings, supported by the work of Henri Lefebvre. In order to
link the use of abandonment and aesthetic beauty, the background to Gordon Matta–Clark will be
briefly outlined. Known for his site–specific 'building cuts' made in the 1970s, Matta–Clark draws
our attention to the fact that we are usually too busy to notice the other significances of our living

Romanticism bloomed during the late 18th–century and stressed the importance of emotion and
individualism. Romanticism occurred as a response to the Enlightenment, a previous movement that
emphasized reason and rationalism. One aspect of Romanticism was a revolutionary style of
painting that would spread throughout Europe, the United States, and Latin America. The
characteristics typical of Romantic painting consist of landscapes, freedom, and beauty. John Martin
's "Ruins of an Ancient City," completed around 1810–1820, depicts desolate ruins that remind us
that all civilizations will eventually collapse. In its wake, a new culture will develop out of the
previous one, with or without knowledge of the past. The piece implicitly shows that the ruins serve
as a place of sightseeing, where visitors can marvel at the ruins that have become one with nature.
With this representation, the painting portrays the activity of visiting ruins as an enjoyable pastime
that causes appreciation of these historic sites, and at the same time, provides insight into the culture
of prior civilizations. A notable Romantic painter, John Martin created paintings that placed human

On Saturday, October 22nd I made the hour and a half trip to the Legion of Honor in San Francisco.
Upon arriving I could see the tall ivory pillars surrounding the entrances of the museum, a reminder
of the Neoclassical age in art history evident in 18th century Europe. Figures Amongst Ruins (Ruins
with Sybil) is a 25.5 inch by 19.5 inch painting ("Figures Amongst") that hangs in the far corner of
the art museum 's Gallery 7. It's calming colors and stunning depiction of decayed ruins captures my
attention. The history for Ruins with Sybil increases the value of its power of captivation. Giovanni
Paolo Panini, the painter of Ruins with Sybil, was born in Italy in 1691("Panini, Giovanni Paolo").
He originally worked as a fresco painter and architect, but later became known for oil canvas
paintings like Ruins with Sybil where he would paint capriccio and veduta paintings of ancient
roman ruins to sell to tourists on the Grand Tour ("Panini, Giovanni Paolo"). Ruins with Sybil,
which was made in 1731, is an example of one of his capriccio paintings. Elements seen capriccio
paintings are partially based on actual places but incorporate imaginative elements (Stokstad and
Cothren, 915). These pieces were an important part of history because they acted as visualization of

(Borges 45). Another real element is the setting, which is not in some other realm but instead at a

There is a grand human reaction to ruin that transcends this word into a conceptual state. It is a
concept that artists have had an abiding interest in, which has in turn led the conception of the
modern ruin. My uncoverage of this concept has been through a multitude of resources whilst
researching for my own artistic practise. Art theorists and artists have thematically looked to ruin as
an aid to understand human nature and the ways in which we cope with the rapidly developing

reaction to ruin and to simultaneously validate it. Ruins hold a curious charm that is produced by the

drugs are prohibited, some athletes still choose to take the risk and use these drugs; some even claim

Technology has been a central topic of today's society and is one of the most commonly used
luxuries we have at this age. Yet the benefits and disadvantages have been through much debate over
the years. "More technology or less?" one might ask themselves. However, when you look at the
facts the answer is clearly less would benefit us all. When in a room with someone face to face
interaction is key. One should not be felt separated by such blockades as phones. Technology makes
us more alone due to not encouraging real friends, ruining the conversation, and because it takes
away from the human aspect of life.

Plus, it's people's fault that they don't have long talks because they're most likely have a boring

"boring," such a frequent complaint, we are saying how uncomfortable we are with stillness. We
may categorize it, as Middleton did, as "dull and pedestrian," but we now always have at hand a

talk about something that isn't boring if they want attention. This is obviously wrong as even if
someone is boring phones shouldn't be used as an escape from constant stimulation. Plus this

I believe you must cherish the time with your family! (1)
I woke up and it was a new day, where everything was normal, but it wasn't, my brother wasn't
there. Over the years I grew up with my brothers and two dogs which one looked like a fatten up
sausage ready to be eaten. I learned to love and live with them. They were my best friends and I
spent most of my days with them. Playing history games or other similar games which they were a
massive part of my life. One day that all stopped when the wind died down all was left was me and

book, which changed my life, because in some way each book I have read has given me a new

Along with unhealthy effects come immediate and future effects that will shape the rest of Tina's
life. Some immediate effects include the fact that Tina is possibly ruining her relationship with
Michael. Michael told Tina how he felt and Tina did not take it lightly. As a result, Tina distanced
herself from Michael, pushing him away and focusing only on her obsession. Having this type of
behavior is one that could push Michael away. With being in a five year relationship like they have
been, not spending the time they should be spending together because of Tina distancing herself
could have a detrimental effect on their relationship now and of the future. Another immediate effect
cause is the relationship between Tina and her children. She has also distanced herself from her
children and as a result, the relationship between her and her children may start to become ruined as
well. For the future, if this obsession takes over her life and destroys the relationships she is in now,
this could make it so that she is alone for the rest of her life. If Michael, a person who helps high–
school students stay out of gangs can not help Tina then maybe it is time for Tina to seek
professional help so she does not ruin the relationships she has in her
