4. DOAJ – more than a list of journals!
• Curates OA title in all subjects and languages
– journals undergo evaluation based on a set of criteria
– whitelist of 12,194 Journals (Oct 2018)
• An aggregation of article level metadata
– Publishers upload article metadata into DOAJ
– 73% of the journals do so
– Currently 3,438,715 articles
• All DOAJ services and data are free for all to use,
download and re-use

injustice?
• to facilitate access to accredited OA journals from the Global
South
• to promote publication and usage of local knowledge.
• to disseminate information about OA to Southern scholars and
publishers
• to decrease the risk of publication with questionable publishers
• to support publishers in the Global South to publish OA
• to deliver the above through local peers

14. DOAJ Ambassador Program: an example project
for promoting cognitive justice in the Global South
• During 2016 and 2017, DOAJ ran an Ambassador program, funded
by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), targeting
regions of the Global South
• DOAJ employed and trained 12 Ambassadors the Global South
China, Africa, India, Middle East & Latin America.
Indonesia and South Korea (2017)
- solicit applications from acceptable Journal publishers
- evaluate applications received from OA publishers
- advocate use of DOAJ by academic community , promote best
publishing practices
- communicate and support OA publishers who wish to be listed in
DOAJ

15. What are the programme’s results?
• Visibility of OA journals from the Global South has improved.
• Knowledge about and infrastructure to support OA
publishing in the South has been enhanced.
• Usage of the DOAJ has increased in the Global South.
potentially lowering the risk of researchers from the South
publishing with questionable publishers.
• A DOAJ Best Practice Guide and other web resources are
available in local languages.
