Rizal arrived in Japan in February 1888 and stayed in hotels and at the Spanish Legation for around a month. He was impressed by Japan's natural beauty, cleanliness, and polite people. Rizal was disgusted seeing Japanese men pulling rickshaws. He developed a romance with a woman named O-Sei-San after meeting her near the legation. Rizal was tempted to stay in Japan but felt he had duties to his home country so he eventually left, expressing his love for O-Sei-San in his diary.
