Extra gum was launched by Wrigley's in 1984 as their first sugar-free product and quickly became one of the top gum brands in the United States. Wrigley's was founded in 1891 by William Wrigley Jr. and originally sold products like soap and baking powder before beginning to package gum with baking powder in 1892. One Bazooka gum advertisement uses humor by depicting gum as a police officer stopping "crimes" committed by food against teeth, with the slogan "eat drink chew is a crime to teeth" and a wanted poster showing someone who blew a large bubble that acted as an airbag.
