RIP CURL
Introduction
Rip Curl started in 1969 by two friends, Brian “Sing Ding” Singer and Doug
“Claw” Warbrick in an old house in a small Victorian town, the friends started
manufacturing surfboards, and also wetsuits using a WWII sewing machine.
In the early 1970’s they approached the Australian Surf riders Association
who ran the annual Bells Beach surf contest and offered to add their brand to
the annual competition making it Australia’s first professional surf competition.
Rip Curl sponsors selected surfers as a part of their professional surfing team.
The team competes in major pro surfing titles in Australia and around the
world.
Rip Curl has maintained private company status while their competitors
Billabong and U.S Quicksilver, operate as public companies.
Rip Curl has become an internationally recognised company that boasts
worldwide success.
How Rip Curl started
Rip Curl started in 1969 by two friends who had a passion for adventure
The first Rip Curl Pro started in 1973 with surfers competing for merely
enough money to cover travel expenses.
By 1974 Rip Curl and Cocola both sponsored the first Australian professional
tour.
In 1997 the Rip Curl Pro celebrated its 25th anniversary and was met with the
best surf they had seen since 1989 and also the largest crowd they had seen
since 1987.
The Victorian Government announced that the Rip Curl Pro officially ranks as
one of the states six Hallmark International Sporting Events.
Fashion
In 1971 they started selling a wetsuit that gusset under the arms to stop the
rubbing.
Surfers would originally wear football jumpers in the water to try and beat the
cold and the available wetsuits at the time would rub until you would bleed,
the two decided that the fashions needed to change.
Making wetsuits became the main aim as they sought new materials, new
designs and new improvements in order the change the world of the wetsuit.
Sponsors
Bethany Hamilton is a Hawaiian born surfer who is currently sponsored by Rip
Curl.
Bethany Hamilton has been surfing since she was 9 years old and, at 13
years of age Bethany lost her arm to a shark attack whilst surfing.
Rip Curl supported Bethany’s recovery and return to surfing almost a month
after her injury. The wetsuit designers at Rip Curl created a special sleeveless
full-wet suit to accommodate Bethany’s missing arm.
Bethany is a well-known model and promoter for the Rip Curl brand. A
motivational public speaker and active charity worker, Bethany continues her
love of surfing.
Sales
Since 17th
September, 2012 Rip Curl is up for sale at the asking price of up to
$400 million.
According to ASIC information Rip Curl showed a net profit of $7.9 million in
the June 30, 2011 financial year.
Rip Curl sales fell 8 per cent to $362.4 million – During the 2012 financial year
the company bought 24 Rip Curl branded stores in Australia and South Africa.
Australia Post owner Ahmed Fahour is the chairman for Rip Curl and owns 2
per cent of the company. Francois Payot founder and director of Rip Curl
Europe own 16 per cent of the company. While the original founders Doug
“Claw” Warbrick and Brian “Sing Ding” Singer, together own 72 per cent of the
company.
Conclusion
Rip Curl is a company about people on The Search. The surf riders, the
events and the products that Rip Curl make are to support people all around
the world who are on the same search.
The Search motto is the company’s driving force behind their progress and
vision. When people are chasing unchartered reefs, untracked powder or
unridden rails, Rip Curls mission is to arm them with the best equipment.
Rip Curl remain the market leaders in surfing wetsuits for over 30 years, and
the Elastomax and Slickskin Technologies are the set standard for wetsuits of
the future. The aim to make surfboards, mostly handcrafted custom boards, is
to fit the board to the surfer to where he wants to go on a wave. The Curls
watch technology have advanced features that let you know what the tide is
doing and when. The Mountain wear range is designed to give the snow
surfer maximum freedom, while keeping warm, comfortable and fashionable
on the snow.
Rip Curl will continue the grass roots philosophy that helped make them the
market leader in surfing, but, the focus will be about charging into the future to
push surf riding to new levels.

How Rip Curl started Rip Curl started in 1969 by two friends who had a passion for adventure The first Rip Curl Pro started in 1973 with surfers competing for merely enough money to cover travel expenses. By 1974 Rip Curl and Cocola both sponsored the first Australian professional tour. In 1997 the Rip Curl Pro celebrated its 25th anniversary and was met with the best surf they had seen since 1989 and also the largest crowd they had seen since 1987.
