2. One of our key outputs:
• Collaboration with industry and 3rd sector: Increase number of
commercial and 3rd
sector partners in current portfolio over award
period (2015-18) and >= four themes to win research funding
(>£250k) in collaboration with enterprise and innovation colleagues
across Wales
• Hence, PRIME Centre Wales will continue to work closely with Health
Research Wales, and is committed to undertake work with
commercial partners in primary, community and emergency settings

3. PRIME is open for business with industry
• Equipment designed for patients in secondary care not always
suitable for use in the community – need for compact innovations
• Multi-disciplinarity of PRIME
• Access to large population

4. Examples of current work with industry - Long Term
Conditions and Co-morbidity
• Currently working in collaboration with Motek Medical partnership on
the recently installed GRAIL system prototype protocol for
assessment and treatment of knee conditions
• The Healthy Eating and Lifestyle in Pregnancy (MRC/HPPI funded)
trial is working with Slimming World to deliver a weight loss
intervention
• The Helpmedoit study is a web and text based intervention to
facilitate social support for health related behaviour change and has
an industry partner ‘Healthcare Learning Smile-on’. Smile–on will
advise on and develop the platform and programming for the delivery
of the intervention, as well as provide ongoing support and
maintenance. We have worked successfully with this company on a
number of projects (including the STAR study)

Packages
Patient-Centred and Prudent Healthcare
•We are currently developing online training for clinicians treating older
women with breast cancer in collaboration with Smile-on. This is to
disseminate training in shared decision-making and use of Option Grid
decision aids, booklets and individualised risk assessment to 40 breast
centres around UK (NIHR programme grant)

Packages
Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance
•Key players in the €11M EU IMI funded RAPP-ID ‘Development of
RApid Point-of-Care Test Platforms for Infectious Diseases’ project.
This is a public-private partnership between the EU and EFPIA
(GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Sanofi-Aventis,
Merck) 10 Universities and 5 SMEs across Europe)

Packages
Screening, Prevention and Diagnosis in Primary Care
•A study in collaboration with Philips, evaluating the use of self-testing
of blood in rural patients undergoing chemotherapy is in progress. We
are planning trials of interventions of candidate biomarkers in cancer
diagnosis in primary care which will involve close collaboration with
industry

Packages
Unscheduled and Emergency (includes pre-hospital) Care
•We are working in partnership with software providers Plain
Healthcare, Medusa Medical Technologies and Ortivus on the Support
and Assessment for Fall Emergency Referral trial. We will continue this
work through a trial of computerised clinical decision support for
paramedics in the care of 999 patients without life threatening
conditions, using anonymised linked data recruitment and outcomes

•The NIHR PISA Study is producing a primary care-specific patient
safety incident classification system to describe the characteristics,
causes, and severity of harm and outcomes of patient safety incidents
in primary care. DATIX, the world leading provider of patient safety
incidents software, has expressed interest in testing and validating the
classification for inclusion in their software
