Rhynia, a fossil pteridophyte discovered in 1917, is characterized by two known species, R. major and R. gwynne-vaughani, which grew in acidic, volcanic regions. The plant features distinct morphological and anatomical traits, such as cylindrical, naked axes with hemispherical projections and a unique sporangium structure, contributing to its classification within the primitive vascular group known as rhyniophytes. Rhynia was the dominant vascular plant in the early Devonian ecosystem at Rhynie, exhibiting adaptations for both terrestrial and atmospheric water uptake.
