Rotation and Revolution
Rotation is the movement of the
earth on it axis over a 24 hour
period.
Rotation
• Revolution is the movement of the earth and other planets around the sun. It takes
the earth 365 ¼ days to complete a full revolution.
Revolution
Results of rotation
• Day and night
When the earth rotates one part of
the earth faces the sun and the other
part is away from the sun. The part
that faces the sun experiences day
light and the part that is away from
the sun experiences night.
• High and low tides
This occurs when the earth spins
and the sun and the moon pulls it.
One force is usually stronger that
the other resulting in high and low
tides.
Wind speed and direction
There are north, south, east and west
directions, wind from the earth comes from
each direction. As the earth rotates different
places will get stronger wind as a result of the
speed.
Results of revolution
Seasons The Earth's seasons are not caused by the differences in
the distance from the Sun throughout the year (these
differences are extremely small). The seasons are the
result of the tilt of the Earth's axis.
The Earth's axis is tilted from perpendicular to the plane
of the ecliptic by 23.45°. This tilting is what gives us the
four seasons of the year - spring, summer, autumn (fall)
and winter. Since the axis is tilted, different parts of the
globe are oriented towards the Sun at different times of
the year.
Summer is warmer than winter (in each hemisphere)
because the Sun's rays hit the Earth at a more direct
angle during summer than during winter and also
because the days are much longer than the nights during
the summer. During the winter, the Sun's rays hit the
Earth at an extreme angle, and the days are very short.
These effects are due to the tilt of the Earth's axis.
The universe
The universe is all of space time and everything that
exists therein, including all planets, stars, galaxies, the
contents of intergalactic space, the smallest subatomic
particles and all matter and energy
The solar system
Let’s talk about the planet that we live on:
Earth!!
The earth is the third planet from the sun.
earth is the most dense planet it is also the
largest of he four inner planets sometimes
referred to as the blue planet.
It is a rotating sphere it is made of nitrogen,
oxygen and carbon. Earth has two major
forces:
Gravity and magnetism (magnetic field).
Earth has 71% water and 29% gas.
The inner and outer planets
The inner planets are: Mercury, Venus, Earth and
Mars they are referred to as the terrestrials.
The outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and
Neptune.
The inner planets are rocky and the outer planets
are gaseous they contain gasses such as iron,
nickel and carbon.
Differences between the inner and the outer
planets.
•The inner planets are smaller than the outer planets.
•The inner planets has solid surfaces while the outer
planets are balls of gasses with no surface.
•The inner planets has greater density while the outer
planets density is very low.
•The inner planets has no ring while the outer planets
has.
•The inner planets spins slowly compare to the outer
planets, the outer planets spins swiftly.
The similarities of the inner and the outer planets
• Both the inner and the outer planets revolves
around the sun
•They all have moons
•The inner planet and the outer planet orbits on the
same plane.
•They have the same shape. (spherical)
Revolve-
Rotates- turn around axis: to turn like a wheel an axis
or a fixed point, or make something turn around an axis or a
fixed.
Planet - object in orbit round star: an
astronomical object that orbits a star and does not
shine with its own light, especially one of those
orbiting the Sun in the solar.
Orbit
path of planet, satellite, or moon: the path that an
astronomical object such as a planet, moon, or satellite
follows around a larger astronomical object such as the sun
.
Spherical round- shaped like a sphere.
Sphere- globe: an object similar in shape to a
ball
Gaseous- resembling gas: neither solid nor
liquid and with a tendency to expand infinitely,
as does air.
Density- how full area is: the concentration
of people or things within an area in relation to
its size.
Tides-
Axis- an imaginary straight line around which
an object such as Earth rotates
Inner- near or closer to centre: located near
or closer to the centre of something.
Outer- on outside: on or around the outside
of something.
move in circular fashion: to move in a circular
movement either around an object or on a central
axis.
rise and fall of sea: the cyclic rise and fall of
the sea or another body of water produced by
the attraction of the Moon and Sun,
