- When translating, context is key. Let’s take a simple example : what does the English word ‘turnover’ mean?
- Of course the first answers is : It depends! Or if asked more : here are some possible translations with some contexts “Turnover was up 30% this year” ≠ “The company suffers from high staff turnover rates” : an apple turnover, a complete turnover
- What’s the best way to capture context? Examples: Humans are incredibly good at inferring context from examples, but have trouble to define rules for selecting a translation With millions of examples, it‘s very likely that we have some that are matching or close to Your context Paired with powerful big data algorithms, aligned bilingual corpora can be of tremendous help to find the right translations. Let’s see how.
- Let’s think about how a person does translations today – any person, whether that be an engineer writing technical emails, or an employee in the translation department of a big company. Their main tools are mostly, : dictionaries, machine translation, and sometimes translation memories
- Dictionaries are rather reliable sources of information – however, they’re not very practical: They’re static and usually stay on a conceptual level, making them hard to read You have to choose the right translation for your context, which isn’t always obvious You often need to know how to use the translation. Dictionaries don’t always give you the manual on how to use the translations it provides
- On the opposite, MT is very practical but not very reliable: Its black box approach offers little reassurance that context is correctly taken into account Small inputs are often mistranslated as the limited number of surrounding words make it hard to infer context in a statistically relevant way
- Translation Memories are used for very repetitive texts but they lack “sub-segment” finesse: Matching full segments is rare enough to severely hinder the usefulness of TMs outside of technical documentation departments Matching at the segment level is good. Matching at the sub-segment level is an order of magnitude better! No one so far has been able to offer a practical and reliable way to match at the sub-segment level
- What people need is a tool that combines all these technologies in a more efficient and flexible way – that’s why we’ve created Reverso Context. In Context, anyone can type any word or expression and get: The most frequently used translations, together with part-of-speech information when applicable Varied examples, in context, selected from millions of real-life texts. - Selecting a particular translation shows even more options: Filter examples on this specific translation and show frequencies Show reverse translations as an additional check or provider of synonyms When relevant, additional information like conjugations and definitions from the Reverso dictionaries are one click away
- Select the example you found relevant and add it to your phrasebook to learn and share vocabulary in context. It’s good to make your own glossary, to learn, to share with colleagues and so easy to create
