Successful Implementation of Electronic Health Information Technology
Since the inception of the HITECH Act, health organizations have faced increased pressure to update their health information technology (HIT) resources. As discussed last week, many believe that the increased use of electronic health records and the quick and efficient communication afforded by HIT can lead to improved quality of patient care. Yet there are significant costs associated with implementing such systems. What can organizations do to ensure that the correct system is selected and that the system will be appropriate for those required to use it? Who should be involved in those decisions?
This week introduces the systems development life cycle and discusses how it can guide an organization through the complexities of adopting a new HIT system. In this Discussion, you are asked to consider the role of nurses in the SDLC process.
To prepare:
Review the steps of the systems development life cycle.
Think about your own organization, or one with which you are familiar, and the steps the organization goes through when purchasing and implementing a new HIT system.
Consider what a nurse could contribute to decisions made at each stage when planning for new health information technology. What might be the consequences of not involving nurses?
Reflect on your own experiences with your organization selecting and implementing new technology. As an end user, do you feel you had any input in the selection or and planning of the new HIT system?
DISCUSSION 1- Successful Implementation of Electronic Health Information Technology
Organizations are constantly updating their systems and resources. It is imperative that nurses are incorporated with the decision in making the healthy information technology decisions. According to Nurse leaders discussion the nurse's role in driving technology decisions (2010), nurses' decisions about clinical technologies should be guided by two overarching goals, establishing safe and efficient care, and measuring nurses' impact in keep patients safe (p. 8). Having the nurses review and support and idea of a new technology helps the organization make the right investment for its patients.

A Nurse’s Role in the Systems Development Life Cycle
While the process of developing and implementing a health information technology system may seem overwhelming at first, the systems development life cycle (SDLC) provides organizations with a framework to deliver efficient and effective information systems. Though the SDLC is a common overarching structure for implementing information systems, it is not a one-size-fits-all process. In fact, there are a multitude of approaches that can be used to guide the systems development life cycle. The SDLC approach that is most appropriate for a particular organization will be highly contextual and subject to organization-specific differences.
This week prompts you to analyze the process of selecting an appropriate health information technology and then evaluate techniques that positively impact the steps of the systems development life cycle in an EHR implementation. You also determine what barriers might occur at each stage and how these could be overcome.

The Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a set of stages used when developing a new information system (Ungvarsky, 2019). The SDLC is a specific plan that helps the team throughout the entire process, from the idea of the system to the implementation (Ungvarsky, 2019). The development of SDLC for a healthcare organization should include a needs assessment that encompasses the needs of the organization’s healthcare workers, including physicians and nurses (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). The organization’s needs as a whole need to be represented, so solutions get proposed to meet the needs or address issues (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017).
The waterfall model is one of the oldest methods used in SDLC and is linear; therefore, the model is sequential, and each stage provides information for the following stage (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). The waterfall model has six phases: feasibility, analysis, design, implementation, test, and maintain (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Feasibility helps decide if the project could be initiated and typically addresses the following: technological, economics, legal, operational, and scheduling feasibility (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Operational feasibility specifically helps determine if the project will be effective, meet the set expectations to achieve the goals of the project, or addressing the problem at hand (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). The analysis phase helps examine the requirements for the system and business needs (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Analysis is an important step to assess the workflow (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Excluding nurses from these crucial beginning phases could be detrimental to implementing a new health information technology system. Nurses work on the frontlines of healthcare and would be essential to decide if the system is feasible to the operations and workflow. For example, implementing a new EHR could be more cost-conscious; however, the documentation could cause inefficiency in the workflow. The design phase helps the team decide what programs are necessary and discusses how they will interact, how the individual programs work, and what the look or feel will be (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). For example, nurses would be great resources to help design and decide specifics to be included in an EHR, as nurses are often documenting several times a shift and on multiple patients. The implementation phase occurs when the designed system is ready to use (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). The test phase evaluates the system to ensure the program works as it was designed (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2017). Nurses would be great resources to perform beta testing to ensure the system is adequate and per ...

Introduction to Information Technology—Role in Nursing and Healthcare
In this module, we begin with an introduction to information technology and the management of information. The readings in this module identify the many areas in healthcare in which information technology is used. The fundamental of healthcare delivery is an important start to our course. Information technology is used in such healthcare facilities as ambulatory care, acute care, and subacute care. The different methods and means each healthcare facility uses and manages information technology is outlined in our readings. Healthcare providers such as direct care providers, clinical allied professionals, and other organizations (i.e., American Medical Association, American Nurses Association) all use technology to guide delivery of care, information, and manage these deliveries for various reasons (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015).
Introduction
As an information-intensive profession, nursing continues to use information technology in healthcare. Nurses use information in applying knowledge to problems, and acting with wisdom forming the basis of the professional of nursing. The availability of this information in caring for patients continues to grow for nurses and allows for increased accessibility, accuracy, and timeliness in caring for patients. The information age is here for nursing and the U.S. healthcare system (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015). In this module, an introduction to information technology (IT), .
The health care system has greatly changed with noticeable reforms a.docxrtodd33
The health care system has greatly changed with noticeable reforms and restructuring taking place as a result of technological advancements and innovations. The introduction and implementation of information systems in the health care system has positively impacted on service delivery ("importance of increasing health literacy content in nursing education," 2015). As a result, new roles and responsibilities have emerged in the nursing practice as the integration of information systems continues to be adopted. Information systems have proved to be an effective management tool in the health care system (Mitchell & Hull, 2020). The new roles and responsibilities have challenged nurses to seek more education on the operation of the systems and to remain relevant in the practice. The complexity and cost of different information systems as well as the rate of change in computer technology are various factors that should be considered when evaluating the appropriate information system to implement (Lin, 2017). Nurses and nurse leaders need a sound knowledge of health care information system and understanding of nursing practice to be able to obtain the computer tools relevant to the practice (Sahay, Sundararaman, & Braa, 2017).
Nursing is a critical profession in the health care system and their input cannot be ignored. Nurses interact with patients more compared to any other health care profession (Lin, 2017). Their primary goal of providing health care to patients gives them an upper hand in understanding the patients’ needs and preferences. This makes it necessary to involve nurses in the evaluation and implementation of information systems in the health care. Implementation of informatics in the health care has aided in the effective communication significantly impacting on interprofessional collaboration (Lin, 2017). As a result, better patients’ outcomes have been achieved and reduced medical and human errors. In my organization, nurses have been actively involved in the evaluation and implementation of health care systems. In the process of evaluating and implementation of these information systems nurses need to be trained and educated on a number of issues.
When introducing a new information system nurses need to be trained on the navigation of the various tools. Some of the information systems are complex and requires a wide scope of ICT knowledge ("importance of increasing health literacy content in nursing education," 2015). It is therefore necessary to equip nurses with the relevant knowledge and skills to effectively and efficiently use the information systems to offer quality services. As earlier stated, nurses interact more with patients compared to other health care professionals. In organizations that offer telehealth services patients need to be conversant with the system being used by the organization. To educate patients on how navigate the system, nurses are best placed to take them through. It is therefore necessary to equip.

The Inclusion of Nurses in the Systems Development Life Cycle
The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is simply a conceptual model which is used in project management that describes all stages which are involved in an information systems development project. Each stage of the SDLC is critical to ensure the successful implementation of new health information systems (Garcia-Dia et al., 2019). It is important to include nurses in each step of the SDCL implementation since they play a critical role in ensuring that the project is designed to meet the organizational objectives. Failure to include nurses in the SDCL can have fatal consequences for the patients, and organizations.
Nurses are more informed on how information systems can be used to improve patient outcomes and safety. Any situation in which nurses are excluded can lead to significant consequences. Firstly, failure to include nurses can lead to a project that is unable to address the staff and patient needs. Nurses are the only healthcare staffs who spend more time with patients and have a lot of bedside experience. Hence, failure to include them can result in a healthcare information system that is unable to improve the care given to patients (McGonagall & Mastrian, 2015).
Secondly, in the implementation phase, the design of the project is revealed and people can give opinions on the applications. If nurses are not included in this phase, the system development can be unfamiliar and ineffective and within the short term, it can be considered incompatible and mismatching with the clinical care offered. Therefore, according to Thomas et al (2016), allowing nurses to interact with systems and understand how it works is important since it helps them to navigate through and even assist other professionals who may experience difficulties.
Thirdly, especially the testing phase is critically important in the SDCL since it ensures the IT systems are functional. According to Zytkowsi et al. (2016), excluding nurses at this phase has consequences since it can lead to the development of a system that does not support other roles of patient care or a system with potential delays in clinical care. Besides, if nurses are not included in this stage, the system can fail to evaluate and support other patient roles. Lastly, once the system has been implemented, there must be a plan on how to carry out maintenance hence when nurses are excluded in this phase, any changes made can cause delays in operating the system resulting in delays in patient care.
In a different light, the inclusion of nurses in SDCL will have several benefits. For example, including them in SDCL will provide nurses with an opportunity to connect with the system and develop a personal connection with it as they become driven to serve patients and.

Any change in process is difficult, especially when dealing with a large team or a complex system such as healthcare. When transition into a more advanced digital technology it becomes even more difficult when dealing with the variety of backgrounds and ages the team ranges. Sullivan places it in 5 easier steps to help the transition into a more digital area easier. Those steps include starting with a baseline, conducting a needs assessment, building out the technology and process roadmap, executing and delivering, and ensuring ongoing holistic services and support (Sullivan, 2019). Starting with a baseline is assessing the current system in place and conducting a needs assessment is identifying areas of improvement. Building out the technology and process roadmap is correctly identifying to proper system that best resolves those needs and creating a plan. Executing and delivering is executing the plan that was set with a full team exciting and engaged in the process change. Lastly, ensuring ongoing holistic services and support is continuing to support the staff even after the process and plan is completed to allow for proper support for new team members or other problems that may arise. The Application of Data to Problem-Solving
In the modern era, there are few professions that do not to some extent rely on data. Stockbrokers rely on market data to advise clients on financial matters. Meteorologists rely on weather data to forecast weather conditions, while realtors rely on data to advise on the purchase and sale of property. In these and other cases, data not only helps solve problems, but adds to the practitioner’s and the discipline’s body of knowledge.
Of course, the nursing profession also relies heavily on data. The field of nursing informatics aims to make sure nurses have access to the appropriate date to solve healthcare problems, make decisions in the interest of patients, and add to knowledge.
In this Discussion, you will consider a scenario that would benefit from access to data and how such access could facilitate both problem-solving and knowledge formation.

1. Electronic Health Records
Electronic health records (EHRs) are at the center stage of the effort to improve health care quality and control costs. In addition to allowing medical practitioners to access and record clinical documentation at much faster rates, EHRs are also positively influencing care delivery and nurse-patient interaction. Yet despite the potential benefits of EHRs, their implementation can be a formidable task that has broad-reaching implications for an entire health care organization.
In this Discussion, you appraise strategies for obtaining the benefits and overcoming the challenges of implementing and using electronic health records.
To prepare
Review the implementation of EHRs in an organization. Reflect on the various approaches used.
If applicable, consider your own experiences with implementing EHRs. What were some positive aspects of the implementation? What suggestions would you make to improve the process?
Reflect on the reactions of others during the implementation process. Were concerns handled effectively?
If you have not had any experiences with an EHR implementation, talk to someone who has and get his or her feedback on the experience.
Search and indicate examples of effective and poor implementation of EHRs.

To Prepare:
Reflect on the concepts of informatics and knowledge work as presented in the Resources.

One animal organism that I found interesting was the species of multicellular Nematodes.
Nematodes are the most plentiful multicellular animals on the planet. They are everywhere; in soil and on decomposing material, from the cold environments to the tropics, in all plant life, in almost all animals, including humans, and also insects (“Information”, 2016).
Nematodes are non- segmented roundworms that possess complete digestive, excretory, nervous and reproductive systems (“Information”, 2016). Most are microscopic. The diversity of nematode forms and territories are incredible: there are more than 15,000 known species, can you imagine that! They infect everything from bugs to whales to humans. Nematodes can take the energy of living organism and cause serious diseases, even kill humans and animals. There are other nematode parasites in humans that are transmitted by eating meat that is not cooked adequately, or through contact with soil or water contaminated with feces, from humans or animals (Hay, 2016).
The nematode organism known as”
Wuchereria bancrofti
”
can cause damages to the lymphatic system and causes debilitating inflammations in different parts .

Revenue Recognition and Operating Income
–
How does each firm recognize revenue and how does its revenue recognition policies compare to its competitors? Is there evidence of aggressive revenue recognition? Consider the firm’s operating income and how it has been affected by “above the line” items including research and development expenses, restructuring costs, income taxes and foreign currency translation. Consider “below the line” components to income including discontinued operations and extraordinary items. Examine earnings per share and the impact of dilution from new shares (and potential new shares) and the anti-dilution effects of share buy-backs. Finally, consider the “quality of earnings” of your firms.

Dear Eliie2121,
Apparently you have a challenge with your composition skills. You have good ideas but you are having trouble expressing them. I would suggest that you go to the Writing Center and get some assistance. I am not an English instructor but there are so many errors in your writing that it is my feeling that you need this writing assistance. Even in this email to me there are numerous errors of grammar. I am going to write your question over correctly so that you can see the errors. Please look carefully at the punctuation I have added and the changes. So, in answer to your initial question here, you need to write better and be aware of what you are writing (as I pointed out in my post response to you).
So, if I am reading your response to my discussion question, is it not what you wanted me to write or is it that I see things differently on the questions? Please let me know one way or another so that I can make corrections on it.
On your paper there were missing commas, incorrect capitalization, missing words, plurals needed, etc. Hopefully, you can see that some assistance is needed. I am here to assist you and this is the best advice I can give you so that you can be successful in graduate school and in your teaching career.

The United States maintains a complex network of law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels. These agencies have varying degrees of specialty and work closely with one another and the courts. Functions performed by the levels of police agencies in the United States run a gamut, from preventing the importation of illegal drugs to ensuring the safety of students at universities. The role of a police agency depends upon its location and jurisdiction. many as 23,000 local and state police agencies exist in the United States as of 2011, depending upon the method of counting them. Types of police agencies under state jurisdiction include local township or city police forces, state police, countrywide sheriff's offices, state highway patrols and constables. The structure and levels of state police agencies differs in each state. Hawaii, for instance, maintains no state police force per Se, but rather a Department of Public Safety. In most states, sheriffs serve as elected officials and act as political liaisons between state governments and police agencies. Various agencies perform specialized police functions at state level. Fish and game wardens, for instance, enforce hunting, fishing, boating laws. According to O'Connor, 35 U.S. states invest independent agencies such as the Department of Criminal Investigations, Department of Motor Vehicles and Alcohol Beverage Control with special, limited powers of law enforcement and investigation. These agencies enforce laws within their jurisdiction, often with the cooperation of other police agencies. Other special divisions of police agencies include K-9 units, which work with police dogs, HAZMAT units, which handle hazardous materials and SWAT, or special tactical units.

When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Francine has shown a tremendous capacity throughout her life in identifying and removing the triggers causing harmful behaviors; this awareness resulted in many years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014). Furthermore, Francine, despite her current depressive state, ha.

During the time (6 years ago) when Andres was exiting middle adulthood and enter late adulthood, he was transitioning from a period of stability to a period of instability (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Major changes were ahead that would hit Andres hard. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used to describe Andres past and present emotional and intellectual state. Prior to Andres diagnosis of a brain tumor and Parkinson’s disease, he achieved all of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Andres, physiological, safety, belongingness, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs were met. He was married, had children and grandchildren, had a great career, plenty of friends, and exercised daily. (Plummer et al, 2014). According to Maslow “When people fulfill the most elemental needs, they strive to meet those on the next level, and so forth, until the highest order of needs is reached (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 505). Emotionally and intellectually Andres was in a good place. Now, at the age of 68, he has disabilities and has lost most of his independence. He tries to de independent, but has injured himself several times. Activities as basic as eating and bathing unassisted are forever changed. Andres has lost his independence and has become depressed as he realizes more and more that his life is forever altered. “He now uses a cane and walker to ambulate. His speech is slow and soft. He requires assistance to get dressed and eat at times due to severe tremors and the loss of dexterity in his hands”
(Plummer et al, 2014). His safety needs were not being met, especially due to his instability, disabilities, and other medical conditions. This has resulted in a lack of belongingness, low-self-esteem, and no self-actualization. But over time Andres started to accept who he has become. Even though Andres hated asking for help, he realized that asking for assistance could have prevented some of the falls and injuries (Plummer et al, 2014). Andres, accepted the help of the social worker, accepted some help from family, realized that he could not change what has happened to him, and even reclaimed some of the friendships he once had with colleagues.

An explanation of potential challenges in adhering to confidentiality in your field education experience
My field education experience is called “brighter future”. It is an agency that most of the employee are related. And so part of their confidently is made sure that they do not share information.
A description of agency policies or mandates about confirms to evidentiality
Today at my field placement, we discuss the important of confidentiality. According to my agency policies, we have to make sure that everything we do is kept confidential. For example, I was observing and learning how to input documents into the computer. I found out that, everyone in the agency is required to keep every file, everything they do about that client has to be protected.
The files that inputted in the computer were also kept manually and under the table so that no one would know about their client’s names.
Discussing any client outside the office was a no-no. They were also required not to address any problem faced by the clients until they have any a consent letter from the client.
An explanation of potential challenges in communicating with clients within your agency
The challenges that I see with confidentiality within this agency is how they interact with each other. Some of the confidential information is shared throughout the agency and take lightly as a joke. I think it’s about time for all employee to come together and be supportive of this little fella who wanted a bike but lack of financial report

With the place that I am working at Paso Del Norte Children’s Development Center, I am working in a variety of places that require different safety plans. The number one rule is to always sit by the door and have the client sit in front of u while the door is behind you. This is in order to prevent any type of danger that may occur. The bright side about working with clients that are in our organization is that these clients are willing to meet with us. It is important to keep note that these clients are in need of help and come to us in order to get help with behavioral, students with special needs, or other specific behavior’s that kids need help with. There are also a number of speech therapists that work within the building and help the kids overcome their fears or behavior patterns when dealing with this issue.

As a State Correctional employee, we often use evaluations to analyze in-service training, policy reviews, programs and services, etc. It may seem as if we are over evaluating; however, this helps to ensure our services are effective.
Westat (2010) says the two reasons program evaluation exists, as written for the National Science Foundation, is to “improve a project” and “document what has been achieved” (p. 3).
The most consistent with my interest is program improvement. For instance, we had four different in-service courses with the same course information. An evaluation was passed out to the students at the end of the course to provide their opinion of the course. The comments prompted the instructors to redesign four courses into one. Evaluations are essential tool in Corrections because it allows us to
document our achievements, which will result in data to support our reentry programs.

In my work with community corrections, I have not conducted any type of program evaluation; however, I understand program evaluation is designed to answer some key questions about a program’s effectiveness to the stakeholders (community, participants and staff). The overarching idea behind program evaluation is to ascertain if those who should benefit from the program are actually benefiting and if those performing the services to the community are skilled at providing the services. Another important aspect of program evaluation is to determine whether the allocated resources for the services are sufficient for addressing the needs of the population (The Program Manager’s Guide to Evaluation, 2010).
In looking at this week’s resources, Langbein (2012) identifies some distinct differences between program and project (p.3). A program is described as “ongoing services or activities” (Langbein, 2012, p. 3) while projects are intended to be one-time activities that has long-lasting sustainable impact on communities (p. 3). Thus, program evaluations should help determine the extent of a program’s success or lack thereof (what works and what does not work) as well as provide insight on navigating areas where unexpected circumstances occur (Westat, 2010). In short, program evaluations provide managers and administrators the data needed to prove or disprove the value of a program which ultimately impac.

He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

Successful Implementation of Electronic Health Information
Technology
Since the inception of the HITECH Act, health organizations
have faced increased pressure to update their health information
technology (HIT) resources. As discussed last week, many
believe that the increased use of electronic health records and
the quick and efficient communication afforded by HIT can lead
to improved quality of patient care. Yet there are significant
costs associated with implementing such systems. What can
organizations do to ensure that the correct system is selected
and that the system will be appropriate for those required to use
it? Who should be involved in those decisions?
This week introduces the systems development life cycle and
discusses how it can guide an organization through the
complexities of adopting a new HIT system. In this Discussion,
you are asked to consider the role of nurses in the SDLC
process.
2. To prepare:
Review the steps of the systems development life cycle.
Think about your own organization, or one with which you are
familiar, and the steps the organization goes through when
purchasing and implementing a new HIT system.
Consider what a nurse could contribute to decisions made at
each stage when planning for new health information
technology. What might be the consequences of not involving
nurses?
Reflect on your own experiences with your organization
selecting and implementing new technology. As an end user, do
you feel you had any input in the selection or and planning of
the new HIT system?
DISCUSSION 1- Successful Implementation of Electronic
Health Information Technology
Organizations are constantly updating their systems and
resources. It is imperative that nurses are incorporated with the
decision in making the healthy information technology
decisions. According to Nurse leaders discussion the nurse's
role in driving technology decisions (2010), nurses' decisions
about clinical technologies should be guided by two overarching
goals, establishing safe and efficient care, and measuring
nurses' impact in keep patients safe (p. 8). Having the nurses
review and support and idea of a new technology helps the
organization make the right investment for its patients.
The dynamic system development method has three phases, the
pre-project, the pro-life life cycle, and post project (McGonigle
& Mastrian, 2015, p. 179). According to McGonigle & Mastrian
(2015), the systems development life cycle has five steps
feasibility, business studies, functional model iteration, design
3. and build iteration, and implementation (p. 180).
In the first step, the feasibility is brought together with the
potential risks. "In step one, the deliverables are a feasibilities
report, project plan, and a risk log" (McGonigle & Mastrian,
2015, p. 179). Nurses should be involved with this step of the
process because they will know if this project, or technology, is
even worth the effort.
According to Nurse leaders discussion the nurse's role in
driving technology decisions (2010), "clinicians must help drive
the selection of clinical technologies (p. 8). Nurses will be able
to know if something will be useful in everyday use or if it will
cause more of a hassle. Not involving nurses can cause the
waste of resources and money spent on the organization.
In step two, the business side begins. The business side of this
process brings together the stakeholders and the processes that
are needed for this new HIT system. Having the nurses involved
in this to use the MoSCoW approach. According to McGonigle
& Mastrian (2015), MoSCoW stands for "Must have, Should
Have, Could Have, and Would Have" (p. 180). Nurses should be
able to answer each of the MoSCoW approach sections and
prioritize between the "must have" and the "should have"
requirements.
Nurse leaders discussion the nurse's role in driving technology
decisions (2010) stated, that nurses should take part in site
visits to hospitals using the proposed technology and should be
prepared to critique a system. The nurses should be able to
recognize and appreciate the money being spent for the
organization to help the workflow for nurses. Acknowledging
the cost of the new program with help nurses be more
appreciative. Not having nurses involved in this stage could
waste time and money on issues and priorities that are not
4. important to the organization.
The third step is the most important step for nurses to be
involved in. The third step is known as functional model
iteration (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015, p. 181). This step
involves translating the requirements into a functional model
with a functioning prototype that can be evaluated by its users
(McGonigle & Mastrian, 2015, p. 181). It is important for the
nurses to be able to use and test out the new technology to see if
it meets the requirements for the organization. "Some of the
greatest success stories occur when staff nurses are given great
latitude in driving technology decisions" (Nurse leaders
discussion the nurse's role in driving technology decisions,
2010, p. 9). Not having nurses included in this stage could
potentially have requirements that are not necessary tested.
Thus, continuing to waste time and money to bring a new
technology to an organization that will not help the nursing
staff.
The final step is also known as the implementation, deliverables
are the system, documentation, and trained users (McGonigle &
Mastrian, 2015, p. 181). This step includes training the users of
the newly approved system and all of its satisfied requirements.
This step stresses the importance of its impact on the business
and organization. Having nursing involved in all of the systems
development life cycles promotes nurses awareness to its
implementation. If nurses help design and enhance the
technology being purchased they will be less reluctant to the
change. "Nurse leaders are clear about selecting technologies
based on their ability to enable practice, not help clinicians
accomplish tasks" (Nurse leaders discussion the nurse's role in
driving technology decisions, 2010, p. 9). Not having the nurses
involved in this step will lead to a miss communication and
reluctant learners. The "post project" phase is when the team
verifies that the system is working properly (McGonigle &
Mastrian, 2015, p. 182). Having nurses involved in this phase
5. will help recognize any glitches or system errors that need to be
fixed. Not performing audits or survey by the nurses will only
have nurse become more reluctant and defiant to the new
system. The goal of the system is to help promote an easier
workflow.
In conlcusion, having nurses included in the implementation of
any new system within the organizaiton will help the
organization as whole. Nurses will be using the system the most
to help with patient care and documenting appropriately.
Continuing to help support the nurses and having their best
interest within the organization will develop and implement the
best system.

Discussion 2: Successful Implementation of Electronic Health
Information Technology
An organization should never underestimate the importance of
the involvement of all key stakeholders from beginning to the
end of the system development life cycle (SDLC) (McGonigle &
Mastrian, 2012). Nurses play a vital role in the success of an
implementation of a new Health Information Technology (HIT)
system, and efforts should be made to maintain their
involvement throughout the process. The majority of nurses
have positive attitudes towards HIT, and most negative attitudes
come from poor system design or a slow or malfunctioning
system (Huryk, 2010). Nurse leaders set the stage for a
successful implementation by providing a positive and nurturing
environment for the staff (Huryk, 2010).
For successful adoption of a new HIT system the nurse must
feel that the system has value and will be helpful in their daily
workflow (Hsiao, Chang, & Chen, 2011). Countless aspects
influence this perceived usefulness including management
support, compatibility, and information quality (Hsiao et al.,
2011). The role of nurses is critical as the providers of bedside
care and managers of patient health information. Sustainment
may fail without the initial buy-in, continued support, and
involvement of nurses in the adoption process. Nursing
feedback is essential to consider when conducting all stages of
the SDLC process, to improve training, functionality, and
adoption by all staff members. Although the process is trying,
most nurses prefer the electronic system to paper after time and
are willing to get involved with the process and promote usage.
The first step of assessing the systems needs carries the
obligation of identifying all the needs of the facility; no one
knows this better than the nurse providing care for the patients.
In this phase, an analysis of every area of the hospital, clinical
7. and non-clinical, is completed to assess the services they
provide and identify gaps that may exist in the current system as
compared to the planned system. The nurses give invaluable
information and can help avoid costly errors and potential
change requests in the future. This process also addresses step
two, analyzing specifications for the system. If the facility has
a need for a particular system, program or interface that exists
or needs to be built, these should be identified at this point.
Designing, developing, and testing the system is the next step in
the SDLC process. Although some electronic health records
(EHRs) have more flexibility than others, the nurse can help
identify any issue that may exist in the present system to ensure
prevention in the new system. A good example is in the system
we are presently implementing. The ADT system does not
allow for a transfer to another facility within our system and to
move a patient to another campus, a discharge must occur. This
process will create a new encounter number, requiring
duplication of all documentation (i.e., admission history). If it
was not for the workflow process review and the help of our
nursing and ancillary staff this issue may not have been
addressed.
During the implementation process the nurses are invaluable.
Nurses are our trainers for both physician and staff and our
super users. Without the assistance of the nursing staff and
their support, the implementation process would not be
successful. This process also encompasses the next SDLC step
which is support the system operations and users. The nurses
work closely with the physicians, staff members, and the
informatics department to support one another during and after
the implementation process. One potential issue that could
occur without the assistance of the nursing staff is the
participation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) by
the physicians. The nursing staff support will assist the
physicians in this process as they do today in many other areas.
Evaluating the system is the last step and we do this process
prior to and after the implementation. The subject matter
8. experts, nurses from specialized areas, run test scripts after the
interfaces are built to ensure they are working correctly. These
nurses become experts on the system and excellent resources for
their coworkers and the implementation team. These nurses
continue the role of the super user and assist with maintaining
the system with upgrades and changes in the future. Problems,
issues, and questions arise at every point in an implementation
process and the nurse is frequently our first resource for reliable
information.
