Nematodes are the most plentiful multicellular animals on the planet. They are everywhere; in soil and on decomposing material, from the cold environments to the tropics, in all plant life, in almost all animals, including humans, and also insects (“Information”, 2016).
Nematodes are non- segmented roundworms that possess complete digestive, excretory, nervous and reproductive systems (“Information”, 2016). Most are microscopic. The diversity of nematode forms and territories are incredible: there are more than 15,000 known species, can you imagine that! They infect everything from bugs to whales to humans. Nematodes can take the energy of living organism and cause serious diseases, even kill humans and animals. There are other nematode parasites in humans that are transmitted by eating meat that is not cooked adequately, or through contact with soil or water contaminated with feces, from humans or animals (Hay, 2016).

The United States maintains a complex network of law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels. Functions performed by the levels of police agencies in the United States run a gamut, from preventing the importation of illegal drugs to ensuring the safety of students at universities. The role of a police agency depends upon its location and jurisdiction. many as 23,000 local and state police agencies exist in the United States as of 2011, depending upon the method of counting them. Types of police agencies under state jurisdiction include local township or city police forces, state police, countrywide sheriff's offices, state highway patrols and constables. The structure and levels of state police agencies differs in each state. Hawaii, for instance, maintains no state police force per Se, but rather a Department of Public Safety. In most states, sheriffs serve as elected officials and act as political liaisons between state governments and police agencies. Various agencies perform specialized police functions at state level. Fish and game wardens, for instance, enforce hunting, fishing, boating laws. According to O'Connor, 35 U.S. states invest independent agencies such as the Department of Criminal Investigations, Department of Motor Vehicles and Alcohol Beverage Control with special, limited powers of law enforcement and investigation. These agencies enforce laws within their jurisdiction, often with the cooperation of other police agencies. When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Francine has shown a tremendous capacity throughout her life in identifying and removing the triggers causing harmful behaviors; this awareness resulted in many years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014). During the time (6 years ago) when Andres was exiting middle adulthood and enter late adulthood, he was transitioning from a period of stability to a period of instability (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Major changes were ahead that would hit Andres hard. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used to describe Andres past and present emotional and intellectual state. Prior to Andres diagnosis of a brain tumor and Parkinson’s disease, he achieved all of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Andres, physiological, safety, belongingness, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs were met. He was married, had children and grandchildren, had a great career, plenty of friends, and exercised daily. (Plummer et al, 2014). According to Maslow “When people fulfill the most elemental needs, they strive to meet those on the next level, and so forth, until the highest order of needs is reached (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 505). Emotionally and intellectually Andres was in a good place. Now, at the age of 68, he has disabilities and has lost most of his independence. He tries to de independent, but has injured himself several times. Activities as basic as eating and bathing unassisted are forever changed. Andres has lost his independence and has become depressed as he realizes more and more that his life is forever altered. “He now uses a cane and walker to ambulate. His speech is slow and soft. He requires assistance to get dressed and eat at times due to severe tremors and the loss of dexterity in his hands”
(Plummer et al, 2014). His safety needs were not being met, especially due to his instability, disabilities, and other medical conditions. This has resulted in a lack of belongingness, low-self-esteem, and no self-actualization. But over time Andres started to accept who he has become. Even though Andres hated asking for help, he realized that asking for assistance could have prevented some of the falls and injuries (Plummer et al, 2014). Andres, accepted the help of the social worker, accepted some help from family, realized that he could not change what has happened to him, and even reclaimed some of the friendships he once had with colleagues.

My field education experience is called “brighter future”. It is an agency that most of the employee are related. And so part of their confidently is made sure that they do not share information.

Today at my field placement, we discuss the important of confidentiality. According to my agency policies, we have to make sure that everything we do is kept confidential. For example, I was observing and learning how to input documents into the computer. I found out that, everyone in the agency is required to keep every file, everything they do about that client has to be protected.
The files that inputted in the computer were also kept manually and under the table so that no one would know about their client’s names.
Discussing any client outside the office was a no-no. They were also required not to address any problem faced by the clients until they have any a consent letter from the client.

The challenges that I see with confidentiality within this agency is how they interact with each other. With the place that I am working at Paso Del Norte Children’s Development Center, I am working in a variety of places that require different safety plans. The number one rule is to always sit by the door and have the client sit in front of u while the door is behind you. This is in order to prevent any type of danger that may occur. The bright side about working with clients that are in our organization is that these clients are willing to meet with us. It is important to keep note that these clients are in need of help and come to us in order to get help with behavioral, students with special needs, or other specific behavior’s that kids need help with. As a State Correctional employee, we often use evaluations to analyze in-service training, policy reviews, programs and services, etc. It may seem as if we are over evaluating; however, this helps to ensure our services are effective.
Westat (2010) says the two reasons program evaluation exists, as written for the National Science Foundation, is to “improve a project” and “document what has been achieved” (p. 3).
The most consistent with my interest is program improvement. For instance, we had four different in-service courses with the same course information. An evaluation was passed out to the students at the end of the course to provide their opinion of the course. The comments prompted the instructors to redesign four courses into one. Evaluations are essential tool in Corrections because it allows us to
document our achievements, which will result in data to support our reentry programs.

In my work with community corrections, I have not conducted any type of program evaluation; however, I understand program evaluation is designed to answer some key questions about a program’s effectiveness to the stakeholders (community, participants and staff). The overarching idea behind program evaluation is to ascertain if those who should benefit from the program are actually benefiting and if those performing the services to the community are skilled at providing the services. Another important aspect of program evaluation is to determine whether the allocated resources for the services are sufficient for addressing the needs of the population (The Program Manager’s Guide to Evaluation, 2010).
In looking at this week’s resources, Langbein (2012) identifies some distinct differences between program and project (p.3). A program is described as “ongoing services or activities” (Langbein, 2012, p. 3) while projects are intended to be one-time activities that has long-lasting sustainable impact on communities (p. 3). Thus, program evaluations should help determine the extent of a program’s success or lack thereof (what works and what does not work) as well as provide insight on navigating areas where unexpected circumstances occur (Westat, 2010). African American women face more barriers impacting their ability, likelihood and duration of breastfeeding than many other races (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). This is specifically relevant when it comes to the workplace as there are a number of factors influencing a woman’s support to breastfeeding involving the workplace that are not obvious. In order to contribute compelling research to this topic, Johnson, Kirk and Muzik conducted three qualitative focus groups and reported their findings (2015). Their goal was to reiterate the need for work-related breastfeeding support and interventions among African American mothers.
In general, African American women hold jobs with less flexible work hours, shorter maternity leave and less social support to breastfeed (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). They are also overly represented in low-income, nonmanagerial positions with high stress and insufficient break times, according to Johnson, Kirk, and Muzik (2015). These factors contribute to the reality of little support for breastfeeding and persistence in the workplace, a wide known issue for all new mothers, and specifically for African American mothers. The authors concluded women felt interventions should include increased paid maternity leave, peer support groups, genuine support from breastfeeding professionals, and educating society (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). The women in the focus groups expressed feeling a lack of professional assistance to encourage breastfeeding and next to no support from family or the workplace (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015).
Spreading awareness on this issue continues to be solution proposed by many in the birthing community, new mothers and scholarly researchers alike. Equally important is the competency of clinical professionals on breastfeeding skills, training, and support (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has limited protection and other breastfeeding laws are implemented at the state level which creates much room for progress and advancement in relation to breastfeeding rights of mothers in the workplace (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). Education and advocacy must include culturally sensitive and community-based peer and professional support that campaigns for a shift in the ideology surrounding breastfeeding and African American mothers (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015).
Education fosters awareness and understanding which then in turn fosters support. This notion can be applied to many of the obstacles faced by African Americans in the workforce, but programs are not going to create themselves. This does not rely solely on workplace organizations. Based on the results of the focus groups, support needs to come from the medical community and women’s personal support systems too (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). I enjoyed reading your post. Teachers have to deal with a lot of situations. Different types of behaviors are sometimes very hard to deal with, but a teacher has to always be on guard and not let the situation get the best of them. I think think that a lot of students misbehave because there is a lot taking place at their home environment and sometimes students may have more needs than others. Some students aren't receving the attention that they are desiring at home. Students face a lot of difficult situations outside of school. I don't think that indiviuduals realize how much your environment has an effect on a you. A teacher must know instantly how to deal with situation when they arise in the classroom. A lot of times when students are having behavioral issues it disrupts and distracts the rest of the students. I think that a lot of times disruptive behavior isn't fair to the other children who want to learn. I know that we all have off set days at times, but different types of behaviors will take away from your instruction time. You have to reallly know how to deal with the situation when it comes.
Many teachers have consequences for the students who misbehave in the classroom. Me personally, if it is an ongoing situations that keeps taking place I would notify the parents about having a meeting.
I am a preschool teacher and yes I have had to deal with a lot of situations. We have a lot of foster children that come to our center at times and it's a battle sometimes. When students act out, I sit and wonder what has the students been through. I know that it is hard to be moved from one place to the next and it's hard when you don't have your parents. My heart is moved with compassion for these students. I know it's hard. I wonder what would I have done without having my mom. I know that there is emptiness. I ask the question, what did their parents do to get put in the predicament of being separated from their children.
I look at my job as a ministry and not just a job. Children need support, compassion, encouragement, and motivation. You have to seriously know how to handle the different situations when they arise. Sometimes I wonder is there any trainings that they have to take in order to deal with off set behavior, but I believe that prayer can handle anything.

Dominance within and amongst social groups is perpetuated when it is not challenged (Adams, Blumenfeld, Castaneda, Hackman, Peters and Zuniga, 2013). This was evident in the case of 24 year old, Aaron, an immigrant from Guyana who sought guidance due to symptoms of depression and anxiety (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Further exploration into his background, revealed a strained relationship with his parents, particularly after the untimely death of his younger brother (Plummer, et. al., 2014). At the foundation of this strained relationship was a different in cultural values held by Aaron and his parents. Aaron, having immigrated to the United States seven years after his parent’s immigration, attempted to maintain the traditional values of his homeland, while his parents often ridiculed him for holding these connections tightly (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
Since the case study indicated that his parents often “made fun of him,” it is clear how dominant groups may, too, alienate Aaron (Plummer, et. al., 2014). Despite living in the United States for several years at the time of his initial evaluation, Aaron continued to speak with an accent. This is one, of perhaps many, characteristics that continues to inadvertently place Aaron within the margins of society; upon first meeting, dominant groups can immediately recognize Aaron is not “one of them” (Adams, et. al., 2013). Prejudicial views can prohibit Aaron, or other immigrants, from transitioning into mainstream society, without always being deemed “different,” or marginalized (Adams, et. al., 2013).
In order to be an effective resource for Aaron, the social worker must be culturally competent, understanding his culture in Guyana as well as his unique challenges to assimilate into the United States. When Aaron discusses the rejection of his parents, he is need of a professional to validate his feelings, while working toward developing his own sense of self-identity (Adams, et. al., 2013). Aaron requires direction to achieve his own personal set of goals. These dichotomous goals include maintaining his traditions and restoring a relationship with his parents (Plummer, et. al. 2014).

The same concept goes for middle aged people. Although; a middle aged person is active, and looks younger than their age, they are still considered to be middle aged. In other words regardless of the accomplishments of a person, their looks, and vitality, they are still catergorized in society by their age. Behaviors that might delay the cognitive, or social aspect of the aging process are socializing with friends and within the community, and participating in activities such as swimming, bingo, traveling, and other hobbies that enhance to cognitive apects of aging.It is proven that people who continue to be active socially, age gracefully, and without limits. They also continue to work brain cells that could eventually die out from dementia, and other illnesses.. Physically a person might speed up the aging process by isolating themselves from friends and family, by not focusing on health and nutrition, and by becoming a couch potato. When a person does not take care of themselves by exercising, and watching what they eat, they end up suffering from illnesses such as diabetes, limit their mobility, and are eventually confined to walkers, wheelchairs, and medications in their later years of life.

According to Zastrow & Kirst Ashman (2016), individuals within the ages of 18 and 65 years are classified as young and middle adulthood. In as much as this classification has been in existence and popular, one can argue that, to determine the term adult hood may not be as easy as it sounds. Adulthood can be perceived differently from people, considering their culture, religion, personal belief, and social economic background. According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2016), “it is difficult to pinpoint the exact time of life we are referring to when we talk about young adulthood”. Some cultures such as the Nigerian culture, consider adulthood as a period where a child can comfortably carter for his /herself without seeking the help of the parents/guardian. Such age range may be around the ages 27to 30. Other cultures perceive young adulthood as the age where a child can comfortably make good decision in line with the expectation of older adults.

Nineteen year old Talia Johnson was the victim of a rape at a fraternity party (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). This week’s video depiction highlights Talia’s struggle with navigating her way back into the life she knew prior to the sexual assault (Laureate Education, 2013). The social worker has a glimpse into her daily life, particularly as she struggles with her parent’s understandable discomfort with their daughter remaining on campus (Laureate Education, 2013). Talia views her current situation as stagnant and not easily changeable. During these situations, the professional charged with helping the client achieve the best positive outcomes when pairing their innate resiliency with a Strengths Based Perspective (Zastrow and Kirst- Ashman, 2016). Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman recognize the importance of emphasizing one’s resiliency, particularly when faced with undeniable adversity (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
While this may be proven as an effective approach, convincing a client who is experiencing consistent feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, is certainly not an easy feat. Therefore, the focus of this approach should remain small, manageable tasks seen through to completion (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In Talia’s case, perhaps suggesting she schedules agreed upon times to speak with her mother would alleviate the stress she feels by receiving the numerous phone calls (Laureate Education, 2013). The premise behind this suggestion is that when Talia starts seeing small daily success, she may start “buying in” to the fact that she, too, can come back from the trauma that has placed her where she is. Thus, her acceptance of her own resiliency, while her innate strengths are continually highlighted by the social worker, will only add to her achievement of positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst - Ashman, 2016).
By applying this concept of resiliency to Talia’s case, it is clear how this would be an effective approach within my own future social work practice. Every client with whom a social worker comes in contact, has some innate level of resiliency. Finding the opportunities to point out resiliency, even in its simplest form, becomes the responsibility of the professional charged with guiding the client toward the desired outcomes. As future social workers, we are in a unique position to guide our potential clients to their most desireable outcomes, regardless of whether or not we are in agreement. When we enter into this field, we do so with the understanding that our clients’ beliefs and resulting goals are to be maintained with utmost priority. It would be a violation of our code of conduct to not conduct client-professional interactions in this manner, and therefore, remaining unbiased when providing counseling and implementing intervention is an integral part of this profession (Code of Ethics of the NASW, 2008).
This will become particularly challenging, however, when a client’s spiritual beliefs do not align, or even negate, those of the professional charged with their guidance. In order to be prepared for these interactions, developing a cultural competence of the client is vital to successful interactions (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Although this competence is achieved over time, research can be conducted even before meeting with the client to understand the beliefs and values that define their religion. In the Muslim religion, for example, it is not acceptable for a man to touch a woman, other than his wife. Knowing this information prior to an initial meeting, the female professional would understand how to properly greet her client, which will most definitely not include a handshake. Secondly, views regarding abortion are affiliated with specific religions. Catholics, for example, take a pro life stance on this controversial topic. This religion strongly asserts than any unborn fetus is a human being and therefore, abortion can be viewed as murderous. While not every Catholic may hold this unwavering belief, understanding this is a belief held by many practicing Catholics may guide initial interactions with a client carrying an unplanned pregnancy.
As a practicing Roman Catholic, my interactions with future clients may also be affected. While I understand the religion’s position on abortion, I do not necessarily hold the same emphatic views. This understanding, yet my openness to consider specific circumstances, may help a client whose religion is an impacting factor in a life choice she has to make. Americans are living far longer than they have in the past, with the average age of death at approximately 77 years of age (Ryman, 2003). This increase in years can possibly be attributed to our advanced medical findings, ranging from research to cure, which have resulted in prolonging the lives of individuals who otherwise may not have lived as long. With our citizens living longer, amenities for these individuals have also been revamped, including senior housing facilities and additional units included in nursing homes. Furthermore, it is an unfortunate reality that the elderly population in our society is often considered as a burden (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). This can typically be heard when people refer to driving behind a senior citizen or shopping in the same stores. Their habitually slower pace does not always align with our quick-paced, instantly-gratifying society, typical in the United States. The mental and physical health of the elderly can also have an effect on society, with financial resources being allocated for this population, thus further prolonging their lives (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
In countries including Japan and China, however, the elderly are viewed with a much higher prestige than here in the United States. Their role within their families, particularly as they age, becomes more ingrained, with the majority of the elderly living with their grown children and their children (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). This becomes the expectation. In these cultures, the elderly are viewed as wise, possessing a knowledge that can only be obtained with years spent on the planet. On the contrary if grown children consider a nursing home for their parents, they are actually considered uncaring and non-traditional (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Additionally, the Indian culture reveres their elderly population, again often living in joint families. The patriarch in these families is often the grandfather or great grandfather. It is customary for the grandparents to have a direct hand in raising the grandchildren, including the child care and decision making regarding the children (Ryman, 2003).
The difference between the United States and the other aforementioned viewpoints on aging can most likely be directly linked to the pace of society. The United States prides itself on technology, economics and the resulting power. W.

The United States maintains a complex network of law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels. These agencies have varying degrees of specialty and work closely with one another and the courts. Functions performed by the levels of police agencies in the United States run a gamut, from preventing the importation of illegal drugs to ensuring the safety of students at universities. The role of a police agency depends upon its location and jurisdiction. many as 23,000 local and state police agencies exist in the United States as of 2011, depending upon the method of counting them. Types of police agencies under state jurisdiction include local township or city police forces, state police, countrywide sheriff's offices, state highway patrols and constables. The structure and levels of state police agencies differs in each state. Hawaii, for instance, maintains no state police force per Se, but rather a Department of Public Safety. In most states, sheriffs serve as elected officials and act as political liaisons between state governments and police agencies. Various agencies perform specialized police functions at state level. Fish and game wardens, for instance, enforce hunting, fishing, boating laws. According to O'Connor, 35 U.S. states invest independent agencies such as the Department of Criminal Investigations, Department of Motor Vehicles and Alcohol Beverage Control with special, limited powers of law enforcement and investigation. When working with clients, there are many factors at play that not only formed the client in their early years, but also influence them now. The factors that influence them now can include: family, living situation, job situation, friends, religious community, etc. These factors can all influence how a social worker can assist in intervening in a client’s life. Each of these factors can also be included in different systems that influence the client (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
Let us take, for example, the case of Lester. Lester was an independent member in his community, church community, and was able to handle his life all by himself. However, after an automobile accident, Lester has done a 180 and can no longer clothe or clean himself (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). This is where systems perspective comes in: what systems in Lester’s life can the social worker use to assist Lester? From the case study, we know that Lester is close with his family, but his sister-in-law has really stepped up to the plate in helping with Lester’s care. Because of Lester’s connections with his religious community, they may be relied on for resources. Lester’s children have not been involved really at all, so they should not be counted on as a system on which Lester can rely (Plummer, Makris, and Brocksen, 2014). Lester will have to have new systems created for him, as he cannot create them for himself anymore.
As a social worker, it is crucial to know the systems on which a client can rely. System Theory is a good theory because of its ability to be used with any client. Knowing what resources are available to a client, as well as their interactions with those resources, is key in creating a treatment plan for the client.

As individuals enter the stage of late adulthood, their previous experiences, lifestyle and relationships help determine what, indeed, this stage will entail (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In this week’s case study, 70- year-old Francine sought counseling for symptoms of depression, directly related to the loss of her partner of thirty years, Joan (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Since Francine’s family and loved ones were unaware of the extent of the the relationship between Francine and Joan, Francine did not have the necessary support as she navigated her way through her grieving process. She started drinking alcohol more often, after several years of sobriety (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
It can be assumed that Francine’s relationship with Joan, spanning thirty years, has certainly influenced her aging process. In long-term relationships, such as this one, individuals identify as being half of a partnership, as opposed to their individual beings (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). These defining relationships allow for individuals to feel supported and share experiences throughout their daily lives. This relationship is at the crux of Francine’s being, and although her partner has passed, its value can be utilized to help Francine cope with the loss and navigate through the remainder of her life. Additionally, Francine’s extensive experience within the workforce will also positively contribute to her aging process. Throughout these years, Francine’s interaction with people, both professionally and socially, have helped to promote a healthy inner being. While she may not be feeling sociable after Joan’s passing, referencing her forty year career will be a helpful tool for her clinician.
The case study mapped out the positive aspects in Francine’s life beautifully. Despite the depression she is currently experiencing, employing a Strength Based Perspective, focusing on her resiliency, would be an appropriate and effective method to help Francine achieve her most positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). During the time (6 years ago) when Andres was exiting middle adulthood and enter late adulthood, he was transitioning from a period of stability to a period of instability (Plummer, Makris, & Brocksen, 2014). Major changes were ahead that would hit Andres hard. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs can be used to describe Andres past and present emotional and intellectual state. Prior to Andres diagnosis of a brain tumor and Parkinson’s disease, he achieved all of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Andres, physiological, safety, belongingness, self-esteem, and self-actualization needs were met. He was married, had children and grandchildren, had a great career, plenty of friends, and exercised daily. (Plummer et al, 2014). According to Maslow “When people fulfill the most elemental needs, they strive to meet those on the next level, and so forth, until the highest order of needs is reached (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2016, p. 505). Emotionally and intellectually Andres was in a good place. Now, at the age of 68, he has disabilities and has lost most of his independence. He tries to de independent, but has injured himself several times. Activities as basic as eating and bathing unassisted are forever changed. Andres has lost his independence and has become depressed as he realizes more and more that his life is forever altered. “He now uses a cane and walker to ambulate. His speech is slow and soft. He requires assistance to get dressed and eat at times due to severe tremors and the loss of dexterity in his hands”
(Plummer et al, 2014). His safety needs were not being met, especially due to his instability, disabilities, and other medical conditions. This has resulted in a lack of belongingness, low-self-esteem, and no self-actualization. But over time Andres started to accept who he has become. Even though Andres hated asking for help, he realized that asking for assistance could have prevented some of the falls and injuries (Plummer et al, 2014). Andres, accepted the help of the social worker, accepted some help from family, realized that he could not change what has happened to him, and even reclaimed some of the friendships he once had with colleagues.

My field education experience is called “brighter future”. It is an agency that most of the employee are related. And so part of their confidently is made sure that they do not share information.
A description of agency policies or mandates about confirms to evidentiality
Today at my field placement, we discuss the important of confidentiality. According to my agency policies, we have to make sure that everything we do is kept confidential. For example, I was observing and learning how to input documents into the computer. I found out that, everyone in the agency is required to keep every file, everything they do about that client has to be protected.
The files that inputted in the computer were also kept manually and under the table so that no one would know about their client’s names.
Discussing any client outside the office was a no-no. They were also required not to address any problem faced by the clients until they have any a consent letter from the client.

The challenges that I see with confidentiality within this agency is how they interact with each other. Some of the confidential information is shared throughout the agency and take lightly as a joke. With the place that I am working at Paso Del Norte Children’s Development Center, I am working in a variety of places that require different safety plans. The number one rule is to always sit by the door and have the client sit in front of u while the door is behind you. This is in order to prevent any type of danger that may occur. The bright side about working with clients that are in our organization is that these clients are willing to meet with us. It is important to keep note that these clients are in need of help and come to us in order to get help with behavioral, students with special needs, or other specific behavior’s that kids need help with. There are also a number of speech therapists that work within the building and help the kids overcome their fears or behavior patterns when dealing with this issue.

As a State Correctional employee, we often use evaluations to analyze in-service training, policy reviews, programs and services, etc. It may seem as if we are over evaluating; however, this helps to ensure our services are effective.
Westat (2010) says the two reasons program evaluation exists, as written for the National Science Foundation, is to “improve a project” and “document what has been achieved” (p. 3).
The most consistent with my interest is program improvement. For instance, we had four different in-service courses with the same course information. An evaluation was passed out to the students at the end of the course to provide their opinion of the course. The comments prompted the instructors to redesign four courses into one. Evaluations are essential tool in Corrections because it allows us to
document our achievements, which will result in data to support our reentry programs.

In my work with community corrections, I have not conducted any type of program evaluation; however, I understand program evaluation is designed to answer some key questions about a program’s effectiveness to the stakeholders (community, participants and staff). The overarching idea behind program evaluation is to ascertain if those who should benefit from the program are actually benefiting and if those performing the services to the community are skilled at providing the services. Another important aspect of program evaluation is to determine whether the allocated resources for the services are sufficient for addressing the needs of the population (The Program Manager’s Guide to Evaluation, 2010).
In looking at this week’s resources, Langbein (2012) identifies some distinct differences between program and project (p.3). A program is described as “ongoing services or activities” (Langbein, 2012, p. 3) while projects are intended to be one-time activities that has long-lasting sustainable impact on communities (p. 3). Thus, program evaluations should help determine the extent of a program’s success or lack thereof (what works and what does not work) as well as provide insight on navigating areas where unexpected circumstances occur (Westat, 2010). In short, program evaluations provide managers and administrators the data needed to prove or disprove the value of a program which ultimately impac.

African American women face more barriers impacting their ability, likelihood and duration of breastfeeding than many other races (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). This is specifically relevant when it comes to the workplace as there are a number of factors influencing a woman’s support to breastfeeding involving the workplace that are not obvious. In order to contribute compelling research to this topic, Johnson, Kirk and Muzik conducted three qualitative focus groups and reported their findings (2015). Their goal was to reiterate the need for work-related breastfeeding support and interventions among African American mothers.
In general, African American women hold jobs with less flexible work hours, shorter maternity leave and less social support to breastfeed (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). They are also overly represented in low-income, nonmanagerial positions with high stress and insufficient break times, according to Johnson, Kirk, and Muzik (2015). These factors contribute to the reality of little support for breastfeeding and persistence in the workplace, a wide known issue for all new mothers, and specifically for African American mothers. The authors concluded women felt interventions should include increased paid maternity leave, peer support groups, genuine support from breastfeeding professionals, and educating society (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). The women in the focus groups expressed feeling a lack of professional assistance to encourage breastfeeding and next to no support from family or the workplace (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015).
Spreading awareness on this issue continues to be solution proposed by many in the birthing community, new mothers and scholarly researchers alike. Equally important is the competency of clinical professionals on breastfeeding skills, training, and support (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has limited protection and other breastfeeding laws are implemented at the state level which creates much room for progress and advancement in relation to breastfeeding rights of mothers in the workplace (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). Education and advocacy must include culturally sensitive and community-based peer and professional support that campaigns for a shift in the ideology surrounding breastfeeding and African American mothers (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015).
Education fosters awareness and understanding which then in turn fosters support. This notion can be applied to many of the obstacles faced by African Americans in the workforce, but programs are not going to create themselves. This does not rely solely on workplace organizations. Based on the results of the focus groups, support needs to come from the medical community and women’s personal support systems too (Johnson, Kirk, & Muzik, 2015). I enjoyed reading your post. Teachers have to deal with a lot of situations. Different types of behaviors are sometimes very hard to deal with, but a teacher has to always be on guard and not let the situation get the best of them. I think think that a lot of students misbehave because there is a lot taking place at their home environment and sometimes students may have more needs than others. Some students aren't receving the attention that they are desiring at home. Students face a lot of difficult situations outside of school. I don't think that indiviuduals realize how much your environment has an effect on a you. A teacher must know instantly how to deal with situation when they arise in the classroom. A lot of times when students are having behavioral issues it disrupts and distracts the rest of the students. I think that a lot of times disruptive behavior isn't fair to the other children who want to learn. I know that we all have off set days at times, but different types of behaviors will take away from your instruction time. You have to reallly know how to deal with the situation when it comes.
Many teachers have consequences for the students who misbehave in the classroom. Me personally, if it is an ongoing situations that keeps taking place I would notify the parents about having a meeting.
I am a preschool teacher and yes I have had to deal with a lot of situations. We have a lot of foster children that come to our center at times and it's a battle sometimes. When students act out, I sit and wonder what has the students been through. I know that it is hard to be moved from one place to the next and it's hard when you don't have your parents. My heart is moved with compassion for these students. I know it's hard. I wonder what would I have done without having my mom. I know that there is emptiness. I ask the question, what did their parents do to get put in the predicament of being separated from their children.
I look at my job as a ministry and not just a job. Children need support, compassion, encouragement, and motivation. You have to seriously know how to handle the different situations when they arise. Sometimes I wonder is there any trainings that they have to take in order to deal with off set behavior, but I believe that prayer can handle anything.

Dominance within and amongst social groups is perpetuated when it is not challenged (Adams, Blumenfeld, Castaneda, Hackman, Peters and Zuniga, 2013). This was evident in the case of 24 year old, Aaron, an immigrant from Guyana who sought guidance due to symptoms of depression and anxiety (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). Further exploration into his background, revealed a strained relationship with his parents, particularly after the untimely death of his younger brother (Plummer, et. al., 2014). At the foundation of this strained relationship was a different in cultural values held by Aaron and his parents. Aaron, having immigrated to the United States seven years after his parent’s immigration, attempted to maintain the traditional values of his homeland, while his parents often ridiculed him for holding these connections tightly (Plummer, et. al., 2014).
Since the case study indicated that his parents often “made fun of him,” it is clear how dominant groups may, too, alienate Aaron (Plummer, et. al., 2014). Despite living in the United States for several years at the time of his initial evaluation, Aaron continued to speak with an accent. This is one, of perhaps many, characteristics that continues to inadvertently place Aaron within the margins of society; upon first meeting, dominant groups can immediately recognize Aaron is not “one of them” (Adams, et. al., 2013). Prejudicial views can prohibit Aaron, or other immigrants, from transitioning into mainstream society, without always being deemed “different,” or marginalized (Adams, et. al., 2013).
In order to be an effective resource for Aaron, the social worker must be culturally competent, understanding his culture in Guyana as well as his unique challenges to assimilate into the United States. When Aaron discusses the rejection of his parents, he is need of a professional to validate his feelings, while working toward developing his own sense of self-identity (Adams, et. al., 2013). Aaron requires direction to achieve his own personal set of goals. These dichotomous goals include maintaining his traditions and restoring a relationship with his parents (Plummer, et. al. 2014).

Colleague 1: L
It is important because although; a young person may have held down a job, and acts mature, they have not yet experienced enough of life to be considered an adult. The same concept goes for middle aged people. Although; a middle aged person is active, and looks younger than their age, they are still considered to be middle aged. In other words regardless of the accomplishments of a person, their looks, and vitality, they are still catergorized in society by their age. Behaviors that might delay the cognitive, or social aspect of the aging process are socializing with friends and within the community, and participating in activities such as swimming, bingo, traveling, and other hobbies that enhance to cognitive apects of aging.It is proven that people who continue to be active socially, age gracefully, and without limits. They also continue to work brain cells that could eventually die out from dementia, and other illnesses.. Physically a person might speed up the aging process by isolating themselves from friends and family, by not focusing on health and nutrition, and by becoming a couch potato. When a person does not take care of themselves by exercising, and watching what they eat, they end up suffering from illnesses such as diabetes, limit their mobility, and are eventually confined to walkers, wheelchairs, and medications in their later years of life.

According to Zastrow & Kirst Ashman (2016), individuals within the ages of 18 and 65 years are classified as young and middle adulthood. In as much as this classification has been in existence and popular, one can argue that, to determine the term adult hood may not be as easy as it sounds. Adulthood can be perceived differently from people, considering their culture, religion, personal belief, and social economic background. According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2016), “it is difficult to pinpoint the exact time of life we are referring to when we talk about young adulthood”. Some cultures such as the Nigerian culture, consider adulthood as a period where a child can comfortably carter for his /herself without seeking the help of the parents/guardian. Such age range may be around the ages 27to 30. Other cultures perceive young adulthood as the age where a child can comfortably make good decision in line with the expectation of older adults.
To replace or improve on Zatrow & Kirst Ashman classification on young and middle adulthood, I will suggest a classification of young adulthood and middle adulthood from the ages of 15 to 50. This classification is in line with Buhler theories of young adult hood. According to Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman (2016), Buhler’s theory clustered adolescent and young adulthood together to inclu.

A knew understanding that I gained from the learning resources about gender identity is that it is very important for people who are a sexual minority to find a community LGB people (Brewster & Moradi, 2010). People who identify as LGB would benefit from being in an LGB community because they can see that people have had the same struggles as them, and possibly meet people that overcome these struggles. They can learn from others, and learn to be more comfortable in their lifestyle. Being a part of the LGB community in young and middle adulthood is very hard, because this is the time of your life where you are starting your career or established in your career. It could be detrimental to come out as Lesbian, Gay or Bisexual in your workplace because you risk discrimination or losing opportunities (Brewster & Moradi, 2010). As a person in the LGB community, in young and middle adulthood, you are constantly thinking about how your sexual or gender identity could negatively affect your life.
As a social worker, I would use this knowledge to better understand my client. I can understand their motivation and the source of their feelings. With this information, I will be able to identify the proper intervention to use with my client. A client who may be struggling with gender identity may need guidance and support. Being competent on this topic will help me to be able to help that client and to better be able to choose an intervention method that fits the client. I will also know when to advocate for my client, and the proper way to advocate for my client.

Nineteen year old Talia Johnson was the victim of a rape at a fraternity party (Plummer, Makris and Brocksen, 2014). This week’s video depiction highlights Talia’s struggle with navigating her way back into the life she knew prior to the sexual assault (Laureate Education, 2013). The social worker has a glimpse into her daily life, particularly as she struggles with her parent’s understandable discomfort with their daughter remaining on campus (Laureate Education, 2013). Talia views her current situation as stagnant and not easily changeable. During these situations, the professional charged with helping the client achieve the best positive outcomes when pairing their innate resiliency with a Strengths Based Perspective (Zastrow and Kirst- Ashman, 2016). Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman recognize the importance of emphasizing one’s resiliency, particularly when faced with undeniable adversity (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
While this may be proven as an effective approach, convincing a client who is experiencing consistent feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, is certainly not an easy feat. Therefore, the focus of this approach should remain small, manageable tasks seen through to completion (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). In Talia’s case, perhaps suggesting she schedules agreed upon times to speak with her mother would alleviate the stress she feels by receiving the numerous phone calls (Laureate Education, 2013). The premise behind this suggestion is that when Talia starts seeing small daily success, she may start “buying in” to the fact that she, too, can come back from the trauma that has placed her where she is. Thus, her acceptance of her own resiliency, while her innate strengths are continually highlighted by the social worker, will only add to her achievement of positive outcomes (Zastrow and Kirst - Ashman, 2016).
By applying this concept of resiliency to Talia’s case, it is clear how this would be an effective approach within my own future social work practice. Every client with whom a social worker comes in contact, has some innate level of resiliency. Finding the opportunities to point out resiliency, even in its simplest form, becomes the responsibility of the professional charged with guiding the client toward the desired outcomes. As future social workers, we are in a unique position to guide our potential clients to their most desireable outcomes, regardless of whether or not we are in agreement. When we enter into this field, we do so with the understanding that our clients’ beliefs and resulting goals are to be maintained with utmost priority. It would be a violation of our code of conduct to not conduct client-professional interactions in this manner, and therefore, remaining unbiased when providing counseling and implementing intervention is an integral part of this profession (Code of Ethics of the NASW, 2008).
This will become particularly challenging, however, when a client’s spiritual beliefs do not align, or even negate, those of the professional charged with their guidance. In order to be prepared for these interactions, developing a cultural competence of the client is vital to successful interactions (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Although this competence is achieved over time, research can be conducted even before meeting with the client to understand the beliefs and values that define their religion. In the Muslim religion, for example, it is not acceptable for a man to touch a woman, other than his wife. Knowing this information prior to an initial meeting, the female professional would understand how to properly greet her client, which will most definitely not include a handshake. Secondly, views regarding abortion are affiliated with specific religions. Catholics, for example, take a pro life stance on this controversial topic. This religion strongly asserts than any unborn fetus is a human being and therefore, abortion can be viewed as murderous. While not every Catholic may hold this unwavering belief, understanding this is a belief held by many practicing Catholics may guide initial interactions with a client carrying an unplanned pregnancy.
As a practicing Roman Catholic, my interactions with future clients may also be affected. While I understand the religion’s position on abortion, I do not necessarily hold the same emphatic views. This understanding, yet my openness to consider specific circumstances, may help a client whose religion is an impacting factor in a life choice she has to make. The Catholic religion also denounces adultery, regardless of the circumstances. I can safely say I, too, do not believe adultery is acceptable. However, as in any situation, .

Americans are living far longer than they have in the past, with the average age of death at approximately 77 years of age (Ryman, 2003). This increase in years can possibly be attributed to our advanced medical findings, ranging from research to cure, which have resulted in prolonging the lives of individuals who otherwise may not have lived as long. With our citizens living longer, amenities for these individuals have also been revamped, including senior housing facilities and additional units included in nursing homes. Furthermore, it is an unfortunate reality that the elderly population in our society is often considered as a burden (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). This can typically be heard when people refer to driving behind a senior citizen or shopping in the same stores. Their habitually slower pace does not always align with our quick-paced, instantly-gratifying society, typical in the United States. The mental and physical health of the elderly can also have an effect on society, with financial resources being allocated for this population, thus further prolonging their lives (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016).
In countries including Japan and China, however, the elderly are viewed with a much higher prestige than here in the United States. Their role within their families, particularly as they age, becomes more ingrained, with the majority of the elderly living with their grown children and their children (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). This becomes the expectation. In these cultures, the elderly are viewed as wise, possessing a knowledge that can only be obtained with years spent on the planet. On the contrary if grown children consider a nursing home for their parents, they are actually considered uncaring and non-traditional (Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman, 2016). Additionally, the Indian culture reveres their elderly population, again often living in joint families. The patriarch in these families is often the grandfather or great grandfather. It is customary for the grandparents to have a direct hand in raising the grandchildren, including the child care and decision making regarding the children (Ryman, 2003).
The difference between the United States and the other aforementioned viewpoints on aging can most likely be directly linked to the pace of society. The United States prides itself on technology, economics and the resulting power. W.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.
