2. My Chosen Genre
 I have chosen to focus on the genre of Indie rock music. The main
reason for this is because it is the genre that I personally listen to the
most, rather than more common genre such as Pop. The term ‘Indie
Rock’, describes the small and often low-budget record labels to
which it is released and the DIY attitude of the bands and artists,
which usually makes for more personal experiences, whether it be
though tours, music videos or interviews etc. Indie Rock as a genre is
quite diverse, with sub-genres that include jangle-pop, indie pop,
and lo-fi, amongst others.

3. Conventions of the genre - 1
 Hair
 The main ‘style’ that is featured throughout Indie Rock bands and
artists is one that looks quite scruffy and messy. This can quite often
mean long hair that is put into a pony tail or bun, or simply short, wild
hair.

 Lighting
 I have found that the majority of Indie Rock bands have
photoshoots that often feature lighting which is very bright but plain.
 As well as this, it seems that it is mostly white/plain backgrounds that
are used.

5. Conventions of the genre – 3
 Poses
 The third convention of this genre I noticed was that band members
often don’t have specific poses, and are just being themselves, such
as having fun with the other members, or simply walking/talking
between themselves, sometimes not even looking towards the
camera. This could be done to make the band look laid back to the
audience. However it is likely that these people have been directed
to look like that.

6. Summary
For my own music magazine to fit in with the style of the Indie Rock
genre, I will have to try and use all of these key conventions that I have
found in this powerpoint. Firstly, the models I use should have long or
messy hair, similar to what the models have in the images I found. I will
also make sure to have bright lighting used while I take the images that
I will use on my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I
could do with either in a studio, which may be better to be able to get
a plain background, or wait until it is bright enough outside to take my
images. As well as this, the models that I use for my images should look
relaxed and laid back.
