2. Characteristics of a Good Research
- Realistic as it requires you to gather data and obtain as much
information about the area;
- Analytical as the process is conducted in a scientific, systematic, and
structured manner using standard methods. Results are validated
accordingly;
- Provides possible solutions to real-world problems and offers
potential technological advancements and developments;
- Offers practical, innovative, and novel solutions and contributions to
different bodies of knowledge;
- It is a scholarly work as it follows the highest ethical standards.
3. Characteristics of Research
• Empirical- based on direct experience or observation, collection of
data relies on practical experience without benefit of scientific
knowledge or theory. It uses facts and data that are obtained through
a thorough investigation.
• Systematic- based on valid procedures and principles, done in an
orderly manner, and follows a certain method or procedure to obtain
objective results
4. • Cyclical- starts with a problem and ends with a problem. In the
recommendation, many problems will crop us as other subjects for study,
hence the cycle is repeated.
• Analytical- utilizes proven analytical procedures in gathering data. The
researcher carefully analyzes and interprets the gathered data before
arriving at a conclusion.
• Original- any research output is a product of novel ideas and shows
originality.
5. Processes of Research
• Define your topic- your chosen topic will directly affect the research
process.
• Write your problem statement- it describes what is to be tested
during the entire research; contains the general problem or question
that the research aims to answer.
• Make an outline- first draft of your research; write down all the
relevant information you have gathered.
• Develop a research strategy- this will serve as your guide in setting
out your objectives and priorities.
6. Processes of Research
• Evaluate your sources- check the quality and credibility of your
sources you will use in your study. Consider the authority which may
include the author and the publisher, date of publication, and
purpose or intention of the author of the material.
• Write and revise your paper- Check the contents of your paper and
make sure that contents are in line with your chosen topic and
problem statement.
• Document your paper- this shows your credibility as a writer,
whether the ideas or information are taken from another source or
from the author himself/herself.
7. Sample Research Output
• Define your topic- The Significant Effects of Access to Internet to the
Efficiency of STA Students in Answering and Submitting their
Modules.
• Write your problem statement-
1. Who can/cannot access the internet? (Profile)
2. How efficient are the students in answering and submitting their
modules if they have/do not have access to the internet?
8. • Make an Outline- This can serve as your guide in structuring and writing your
study.
Example:
1. Define access to internet (its possible advantages and disadvantages,
and other factors)
2. Define efficiency.
3. Research on possible effects of having/having no access to internet to
efficiency in learning. (Start from international-national-local-regional studies)
9. • Evaluate your sources- use the APA format in indicating your sources
Here is an example:

Learning @http://www.giovanienacleobrightideas.com
• Write and revise your paper- check alignment of content to your
SOP(what you really want to find out)
• Document your paper
