Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. Your first research task involves studying the opening sequence (max 4-5 min) of a
range of different filmgenres. The purpose of this task is to become better familiarised
with how filmmakers use this short sequence to grab the audience’s attention. The
opening sequence plays an important role in how you engaged your audience with
the story you are trying to tell them.
You need to look at THREE different opening sequences. One of the films chosen must
be from the drama genre.
Before you begin, watch the sequence a several times, but remember to only focus
on the first few minutes.
Introduction
Briefly describe the content of the opening sequence (what happens).
Narrative and form and style (use of technical and symbolic codes)
Which framing techniques (shots, angles and movement) are used in the
sequence and to which effect? (try to givethree examples fromeach film)
