Task 2:
1. Explain Jaume Balagoro’s reasons for making REC in a handheld, documentary style
2. 2. Is it a coincidence that Cloverfield and Diary of Dead were released at the same time, or does
it relate to audience demand for horror filmed in this style?
3. Why do you think Screen Gems, the distributors of Quarantine wanted to get the remake
out so quickly?
For your article, you need to consider why film production companies produce remakes and the
factors that influence those remakes.
Factors which influenced the remake of REC
Financial factors
Trends
Genre and popularity
Synergy (related products such as DVD’s/books/TShirts)
Vertical integration (where a film company deals with the production, distribution and
consumption of a film)
In your magazine article you will need to comment upon all of the above
Task 3:
The reason he filmed the film in this way is because he wanted to give an “Point of View” style
film so it gives the audience an insight to what its going to be like being there.
Yes, the director of Rec didn’t know Cloverfield and Dairy of Dead until they was released until they
finished the film. The type of film at this time was in demand from the audience who wanted change
Because the film Rec was so successful, the distributors would have wanted to get the English version
out fast as possible before the hype died down.

Article intro:
P1. Introduce your article by giving the titles of the films covered and production factors which
influence remakes

takings. Describe the production values and context (handheld documentary style/plot synopsis)
P3. Quarantine
Relate factual information about Quarantine; director, release date, distributor, budget and box
office takings. Describe the production values and context (handheld documentary style/plot
synopsis. Explain similarities and differences with the original.
P4. Production Contexts
Explain why Quarantine was produced so soon after REC. Give examples concerning trends, genre
and financial factors.
In my essay, I will be looking at re makes of films and the reasons of why they are making them, some reason
they might be doing this is to keep up with society and also to make more money. A good example of a remake
is Rec, the low budget Spanish film was so successful, they decided to make an English version called
Quarantine.
Rec is an independent film released in 2007, it was distributed by Film AX, the film was directed by
Jaume Balagueró. They had a budget of €1,500,000 and made a box office taking of 32,492,948. This
shows that the handheld style of filming is a good way of filming a horror film as it makes it have a
more realistic viewing experience.
The film Quarantine was released in 2008 directed by John Erick Dowdle, the film was distributed by Screen
Gems. They had a budget of $12,000,000 and they earned 14,211,321 in the box office takings. The reason
they created this remake is because the Spanish version did so well with such a small budget, the American’s
thought that they would do equally as good in an English version but they was wrong
4. P5.
Explain synergy and vertical integration and how Screen Gems are an example of a vertically
integrated company. Explain how Screen Gems have contributed to the overall success of REC due to
this.
REC was a massive success in terms of profit in the film industry and it was popular worldwide at a
quick rate, Quarantine was released and produced soon after REC due to the fact that REC was very
popular. Screen Gems knew this would make them a lot of money, this is why they released
Quarantine so soon after REC.
Synergy is financial integration that has source and variety that can be from sports, films, TV shows
etc. An example of this will be the film Star Wars, from the film franchise, they have produced
merchandises relating to the film to revenue profit for manufactures and the film company. As REC
was a huge success and because of its popularity Screen Gems, made a remake called Quarantine.
Later after the release, they released DVD’s, Blu-Rays for the film REC, this resulted in even more
popularity and profit to Filmax.
