The document discusses two remakes - Quarantine and The Karate Kid. Quarantine was a remake of the Spanish film REC made just one year later. It was produced by Screen Gems to capitalize on the excitement around REC's style, but also for financial gain. The Karate Kid was remade in 2010 with a $40 million budget, much higher than the original, and it ended up being very profitable at the box office. Remakes are influenced by trends, genres, money-making potential, and reaching wider audiences that may be deterred by subtitles.
Ralph, a once-famous screenwriter and film director, is in his seventies and terminally ill. He has two final ambitions: to be reconciled to his long-lost son Michael and to ensure he does not become a burden to his devoted young wife. But Ralph wrecks all hope of reconciliation when he picks a fight with Michael’s girlfriend. He is then contacted by ‘The Visitor’, a sinister stranger whom he has hired to ensure a painless end to his life. But The Visitor plays a devastating trick…
It is Christmas Day and the Milgram family wake to find a mysterious black substance surrounding their house. Something monumental is clearly happening right outside their door, but what exactly? They then Descend into terrified arguments, they turn on the television, desperate for any information. On screen a message glows ominously: Stay Indoors and Await Further Instructions. As the television exerts an ever more sinister grip, their paranoia escalates into bloody carnage.

On screen a message glows ominously: ‘Stay indoors and await further instructions’. As the television exerts an ever-more sinister grip, their paranoia escalates into bloody carnage.

1. LO2 Same film, Different Time and Place
For this assignment I will be looking at REC and Quarantine and talking about the
factors which influence remakes.
The factors that influence remakes are things such as trends, genres, financial,
technology, distribution and exhibition, stars, horizontal integration, synergies
between films, social, political and regulatory issues. .
REC which is a horror/thriller made in 2007 that was directed by Jaume Balahuero.
REC was first show in the UK on the 23rd of February 2008 at the Glasgow Film
Festival then on 11th of April in 2008 it was released in
the UK. REC was produced and distributed by Filmax
which is a small company from Spain. The budget for
REC was €1,500,000 and the box office takings were $
32,492,948. REC was filmed like a handheld
documentary which means the audience views
everything through the camera and this gives the effect if
a first person views. The story takes place in an
apartment and focuses on the residents of the
apartment, fire men as well as young female TV reporter and her camera operator.
The TV reporter and her camera operator are covering a shift in the fire station when
the fire station receives a call from an old lady who is trapped in her apartment. TV
reporter and her camera operator go with the fire service to the apartment, when
they reach the apartment they hear screams coming from inside the apartment, lots
of people are gathered outside with the police, that where the nightmare stat an
outbreak of a disease that turns people into bloodthirsty killers.
Quarantine which is a horror/mystery/thriller from the United States was directed by
John Erick Dowdle. Quarantine was first released in the UK on the 21st of November
2008.Quarantin was distributed by Screen Gems, which is owned by Sony Picture
Entertainment. The budget for Quarantine was $12 million and the box office takings
$41,319,906. Screen Gems bought the rights to the original film REC. Just like REC.
Quarantine revolves round a reporter and her camera operator, in an apartment after
an outbreak of a disease that turns people into bloodthirsty
killers, just like REC. This film is also filmed like a first
person, handheld documentary, where the audiences
views through the camera.
The reason for the remake Quarantine so soon after REC
was basically to make more money. In an interview
Director John Erik Dowdle says the was approached by
Roy Lee and Doug Davidson who were from the production
company, Vertigo Entertainments, that are responsible for
2. co-producing Quarantine. They asked him that after watching a promo for REC and
reading a review of John’s latest film they thought he was really good at reality and
wanted him to do an outline for a possible remake for REC. John Erik Dowdle says
that Screen Gems really loved the idea and started to film it a few months later.
Screen Gems distributed and produced Quarantine so soon after REC because of
the excitement over the style used in the making of the film, as well as financial
factors. I also think that the film was remade for an American or English speaking
audience because not many people like to watch a film with subtitles. Personally if I
want to watch a film and I find out its subtitles that change my mind on watching it.
The martial arts film The Karate Kid 1984 from the united states,
directed by John G Dvildsen. The film was produced and
distributed by Columbia Pictures that’s a subsidiary to Sony
Pictures Entertainment Company since 1989. The budget for The
Karate Kid was $8million and the box office takings were $
90,815,558. JWP(Jerry Weintraub Productions) , Overbrook
Entertainment and Columbia Pictures were all responsible for the
remake of The Karate Kid. The Karate Kid is about a boy that
gets bullied so a handy man who is a martial arts master agrees to teach him karate
and shows him that there is more to martial arts than
fighting.
The 2010 remake of The Karate Kid was directed by Harald
Zwart and was produced by Will Smith sand Jada Pinkett
Smith under will smiths production company Overbrook
Entertainment. The film was Produced and Distributed by
the same company as The Karate Kid from 1984, Columbia
Pictures as well as JWP
(Jerry Weintraub
Productions). The Karate
Kid 2010 remake was
produced on a budget of
$40million and the box office takings were $
359,126,022. Just like the 1984 version Karate
Kid is about a boy who gets forced to move to china with his mum. The boy that gets
bullied so a handy man who is a martial arts master agrees to teach him karate and
shows him that there is more to martial arts than fighting.
The main reason for the remake was due to the financial benefit. With it being a
$40millin budget that made it likely that the film would make a huge profit.
