The director of the 1976 Carrie was American director Brian De Palma, the film was made two years
prior to the book written by Steven King. The film was a huge box office hit bringing in £33,800,000.
The 2013 remake of the movie was not such a big success as the orginal, the budget for the film was
just over £30,000,000. Even with popular cast members like Grace Mortez the film only made
£16,000,000
I think that this movie was remade because of the development in technology allowing the director
Kimberley Peirce to grasp the audience with new techniques and styles that they was not able to
create back in the 70s. Chloe Grace Moretz was chosen by the director because she has stared in a
recent block buster Kick Ass. As they used Chloe to attract a younger audience , furthermore the
older generation would want to watch it as they would have seen the original
Kimberley Pierce’s reasons for remaking Carrie is the rising trends of horror films being made this
year. And for her to realise it at the end of October so close to Halloween, this will also make people
want to watch it. The audience loves to be scared but in the comfort of being around their friends
and family. As the original Carrie was successful. The director would have proposed the idea to
create a remake of the film as it would bring in more profit for people who have not seen the film.
The relationship between Screen Gems and United Artists is that they have both produced the Carrie
movie, the reason that there was a remake was this film is the advertisement in technology, to
attract the younger audience in the advertisement in technology is a huge importance because the
younger generation will be attracted to this. This would maximise profits for both companies
because people may buy the original movie on DVD before seeing the new one, just to compare the
two. The movie was distributed by Screen Gems who are a subsidiary of Sony. Columbia Tri-Star are
horizontally integrated with Screen Gems, who are also owned by Sony. This means that even
though Screen Gems distributed the movie Sony will still profit from the production, distribution and
exhibition. The relationship between Screen Gems and United Artists are that they both are the
production companies for Carrie.
Synergy is a big part factor for the films finacial profits as it ties in a lot of merchandise that you
would have not found for the original Carrie film. Merchandise such as T-shirts, posters and toys
could be found in shops, tis would create more profit towards the film but also promote the film so
more people hear about it and the word gets spread that this is the film to see. The biggest profit
that Carrie benefits from is the Stephan King novel that would have been rewrote to fit the film
perfectly. The company would also put images of the film with the book so people can relate to what
they have just watched.
The soundtrack has taken songs from previous years and applied them to the film or certain artists
have adapted work and made it to apply to the film. Certain songs such as Take a Walk – Passions
Pits released their song years ago. The film company have hand selected these songs to fit the film in
their image.
Why have the producers of Carrie chosen Chloe Mortez?
The producers chose Chloe Mortez for the role of Carrie as she played one of the main roles
in the hit movie Kick Ass, by casting her in this film it would make her current fans watch the
latest movie she has been in, furthermore the people who watched the original movie will
want to watch the remake aswell.
