In two paragraphs, relate factual information about the version of Carrie produced in 1976 and the
new version in 2013. Give details of the director, release date, distributor, budget and box office
takings. Describe the plot and cast briefly
Give Kimberley Peirce’s reasons for remaking Carrie. Define the target audience for the film.
1. Explain how some of Kimberley Pierce’s reasons for remaking Carrie could be to do with
trends, particularly amongst the film’s target audience
Consider the companies responsible for the making of both films. What is their relationship?
Describe the relationship and state why this is a financial factor.
I think that a remake was considered due to advancements in computer technology, as special
effects could be used that were not available when the original film was made in 1976. This
allowed the remake to be told in a different sort of style with CGI being used rather than out-
dated effects. Kimberly Pierce chose Chloe Grace Moretz to play Carrie, as casting her would
bring Chloe’s audience’s interest to the film. This is because she has starred in other films that
have been highly successful with the younger side of the audience spectrum. This remake also
would gather attention from fans of the older remake.
The original Carrie was made in 1976, just two years prior to the Steven King novel of the
same name which it is based off. The film was directed by Brian De Palma and written by
Lawrence Cohen. Carrie received two Academy Award nominations, one for Sissy Spacek
in the title role and one for Piper Laurie as Carries mother Margaret White. The film was
distributed by United Artists on a budget of $1.8 Million however it made $33.8 Million in
the box office making it a very successful hit film. However the 2013 remake was created
on a budget of $30 Million, with it drawing in $82.7 Million making it more financially
successful than its predecessor. In the 2013 remake Chloe Grace Moretz played the role
of Carrie while Carries mother was played by Juliana Moore. The 2013 remake was
directed by Kimberly Pierce.
The film received two Academy Award nominations, one for Sissy Spacek in the title role
and one for Piper Laurie as her abusive mother.
Another reason Carrie was remade was due to the rising trends and popularity of horror films,
particular ones aimed at younger to middle age audiences. As the original film was a successful,
producers would be more interested to bring out a remake as it is more likely to be successful
again, while also creating a new audience for the original increasing profits for both films.
The original Carrie was distributed by United Artists while the remake was distributed by Screen
gems. Both these companies are linked as viewers of the original Carrie may be influenced to
watch the remake by screen gems, while viewers of the new film by also be influenced to watch
the older film produced by United artists. Through this relationship both companies would make
a collective profit from the Carrie franchise from both films and merchandise.
Consider the products that tie in with the release of Carrie and give details of:
 How synergy is a factor in the remake of the film
 How the films soundtrack will appeal to the target audience (try to find if any artists
have released tracks individually to coincide with the release)
Factors which influenced the remake of Carrie
Financial factors
Trends
Genre and popularity
Synergy (related products such as DVD’s/books/TShirts)
Vertical integration (where a film company deals with the production, distribution and
consumption of a film)
In your magazine article you will need to comment upon all of the above
P2 describe the
relationship between
films and their
production contexts
with some appropriate
use of subject
terminology [IE]
M2 explain the relationship
between films and their
production contexts with
reference to detailed
illustrative examples and
generally correct use of
subject terminology
D2 comprehensively explain the
relationship between films and
their production contexts with
elucidated examples and
consistently using subject
terminology correctly
Synergy is an important factor for the films financial profits as there are now are lots of merchandise that
were not made for the original Carrie film. These are items such as, posters, action figures, clothes that
people who enjoyed the film can purchase. These sales would not only increase profits for the film but it
would also spread awareness for people who may not have heard of the film or for people who didn’t know
about the remake but saw the original. Carrie would also make profit from the Stephan King novel from
which both films are based. This also means that fans of Stephen King would also may be interested in
watching the Carrie films which would increase profits more. The films soundtrack has taken songs from
previous years and in some cases had them covered by different artists to suit the film more. Some of the
songs chosen for the film are, “Ends of the earth” and “Hip hop kids”.
Star theory
Why have the producers of Carrie chosen Chloe Grace Moretz?
They have chosen her for the role of Carrie as she is popular with the current generation after she
starred in the sleeper hit “Kick Ass”. Making her star in Carrie would lore her fans from this
generation into watching Carrie, as well as the older generation who watched the original remake.
