Research
Into Existing Sports Magazines
Introduction
• After discussion with the tutor and group of class mates I have decided to
focus on creating a sport magazine. The main reason behind it is that this
subject matter is related to my after school activity.
• My next As Media studies task is to research existing and well established
sports magazines and analyze them in order to get a clear idea of how to
make my own better and more appealing to the readers.
Front Cover Analysis
Layout: The
layout of the front
cover creates an
interest to college
students and
athletes who love
sports. The text is
represented with
large font size to
make it easier for
the readers .
Color: The colors used on
this cover are black , grey ,
blue. The background is dark
which implicates that only
the main image is important.
Typography and
Language: The
language used here
is very modern, the
font used is made to
be interesting and
appealing to the
eyes of the readers.
The masthead has a
very unique message
which will make
athletes think about
why sports are useful
Mise-en-scene: The
athlete is obviously the main
image of the front cover. The
image of the athlete reflects
as in a real-game situation.
The cover consists of formal
writing which gives a
pleasent attention to the
target audience.
Mode of address: The
cover is focused on the main
image, which is the athlete.
It addresses mostly college
athletes and ofcourse
sportsman who wish to
succeed.
Layout: The layout of
this front cover sends
an interest to all sports
fans, who enjoy to play
and do sports in their
free time. The text is
shown with large font
size to make it easily
readable for the
audience.
Color: The colors used on
this cover are mainly warm
colors( yellow, red) but we
can see blue as well. These
clorors are associated with
heightened emotions and
passion as well as joy and
playfulness.
Mise-en-scene: The
athlete is in the center here,
which means that he is the
main image of this front
cover. His standing ovation
to this sport shows us that
its pretty dangerous and
must be carefully played as
we can see from his suit.
Mode of address:
The main person in
this picture is ofcourse
the athlete. The
magazines main target
audience is again
sportsman and people
who love sports and
are comfortable with
reading such articles. Language : The language
used on this cover is formal.
The effectiveness of this is
to make it more appealing
to readers as well as to
show the importance of this
magazine.
Front Cover Design Tips
• An attractive and intriguing front cover page should make the consumer to
purchase the magazine. A good front cover is the main sales figure driver for the
magazine.
• The cover page has to have a main focus point to captivate the potential
consumers, which is usually the model in the image but could also be the headline.
• Use of any color is preferable as long as it looks good. People usually want to avoid
colors such as green and orange in front covers.
• Photography is preferred over illustration as it tends to sell better.
• The masthead should be large to be appealing to the target audience .
• The headline needs to be eye catching so that the consumers will take a glimpse
look at it. The more attractive it is with different colors, the bbetter and more
pleasing it is for the potential consumers.
• The bigger cover line should use colors to attract the audience. Smaller color lines
should usually go with black or white text.
Magazine front cover
comparison
Layout: The
layout of the
magazines is
similar. On both
front covers the
Masthead is on
top of the page.
On one magazine
the text is only on
the left side of the
page, while on the
other one it is
wrapped around
the main image to
show the
importance of the
image.
Images: Both of the images
are similar, as both have
sportsman on their front
cover. In both cases the image
is presented in a close-up to
show the importance of the
characters. The image tries to
grab attention to readers who
prefer to do sports as well.
Color Scheme: The
colors used in these front
covers differ. The one on
the left side uses colors
such as black, grey and
red to create an interest
to the readers, while the
magazine on the right
uses green, white and
yellow which is very eye-
catchy to the readers and
also visually appealing.
Masthead: In both magazines the
Masthead is well represented with huge
letters on top of the page making it very
easily readable and grabing the eyes of the
target audience.

Content Page Design Tips
• The design of the content page must be eye catching and functional.
• Table of contents must be clearly visible and easy to understand.
• Choice of fonts and sizes is essential to highlight brief summaries in the articles.
• Use of colors should be intriguing to give a pleasant overview to the readers.
• Graphics and text are not supposed to compete for attention but instead to work
for a visually appealing layout.
• Images used can be in different sizes to make it more pleasing to the readers.
• Carefully selected images add interest to the magazine as they can be used as
content preview.
• It is essential to use headlines and quotes from the article.
• Use of hierarchy will give sense or order and structure.
• Use of grid system is to make sure that the content page has balance.
Article Analysis
Layout: The layout of this
article page is mainly in text. As
the main image in the top left
corner provides assistance to
the information written in text
both are equally important for
the readers.
Color Scheme: The colors
used in this article are always
related to the type of text which
is the article about. In this case
the colors used are red, black,
and white. The background of
this page is also plain white
which tells us that it was meant
to be very simple and easily
legible for the target audience.
Typography and
Language: The font size is
pretty small, it is the way an
article should be. The masthead
is bigger as it has more
importance, it is written in Serif
Font. The language is simple, as
it addresses mostly sportsman
and of course teenagers.
Mise-en-scene: The look
of this magazine is very
attractive as from the colors
used, which are unique. The
text used is simple and very
pleasant to read for the target
audience, the mix of there size
shows which part of the text is
most important and which one
is less.
Layout: The layout of this
article contains mostly text.
There is a main image on the
right, which gives us an idea
what the article is about.
Mise-en-scene: The look
of this magazine shows that it
is a virtuous one. The main
image shows that riding a bike
is fun and enjoying for the
ones who wish to do it. The
text is small cased as the
picture has more significance
than the text.
Color Scheme: The colors
used here are very intriguing.
The mix of different ones such as
yellow, red, white, black that
gives the onlookers a
comfortable expression and
style, and full of excitement to
read this article and maybe even
experience such activity in the
future.
Typography: The font
which is used here is Serif, it is
easy to read and most
attractive to the readers.
Letters are small cased, the
beginning are always bolded
which means that it is very
important.
Article Spread Design Tips
• The design should be simple, the layout should be engaging and easy to read.
• Order of design should be followed by headline, intro copy and main copy.
• Big blocks of text should not be broken up as the flow of the text columns need to
be tidy and even.
• Images and headlines are the most captivating. Both text and images should create
a harmony on the page to make it absolutely pleasing to the readers.
• The top part of the article is most appealing to the eye of the readers, therefore it
is the most natural design.
• The most visible area of an article is the top of the page, where it is most exposed
to the eyes of the consumers.
Research summary
• After concluding my research into existing sports magazines, favorably
analyzing Content pages, Front covers, Articles, I have had an impression
of the amount of effort and work it takes to make such magazines.
• The Front cover is always most important. As it is the cover it should look
visually appealing to the customers and provide them with an interest in
buying and reading the magazine.
• The Masthead should be written in a large font size to make the magazine
eye-catch to the customers and eligible as well for the readers.
• The fonts and font sizes are always chosen specifically by the magazine,
different magazine use very unalike types and other styles.
Research into existing sports
Magazines and Publishing
Companies
Introduction
• My Media studies Foundation Portfolio main task is to research the
existing sports magazines and Publishing companies.
FourFourTwo Research
• FourFourTwo is a football magazine published by Haymarket. Issued monthly, it published its 200th
edition in February 2011. It takes its name from the football formation of the same name, 4-4-2.
• The magazine was first issued in 1994 in the UK
• It is released on a monthly basis, every month the most respected columnists in football bring
together the biggest names and the finest features to give you the world's no.1 football magazine.
• The magazine is really famous worldwide, it has around 65,000 readers and since 2010 it has been
published worldwide with more than 8 different languages.
Haymarket Media group
• Haymarket Media Group is a privately held media company
headquartered in London.
• It has publications in the consumer, business and customer sectors, both
print and online.
• The company has expanded outside the UK in 1999.
• In 1999, it entered the Indian market, becoming one of the first foreign-
owned magazine publishers to do so. Haymarket produces content across
print, web and mobile in the US, Germany, India and Hong Kong.
• The founders of the Haymarket Media company were Michael Heseltine,
Clive Labovitch.
Haymarket Publication Magazines
FourFourTwo case study
• Target Audience: The magazine is read by lots of people and 94.5% of
them are me and 64.7% are from the working types of upper middle class,
middle class and lower middle class. Also 85.4% are from the age group of
15-34 years old.
• FourFourTwo use images to do with football, like new equipment such as
new boots, kits, footballs, news about coaches and players and transfers
as well.
• The main image is always placed in the middle or on the right side of the
cover page.
• Fonts:
• Always big bold letters for the title
• Medium sized font for the subtitles
• Different colors for subtitles and for diverse issues
SLAM Research
• SLAM magazine is an American basketball
magazine in circulation since 1994,
published by SLAM Media Inc.
• The magazine carries advertising for
basketball related products, street-wear
clothing and hip hop music.
• SLAM has published over 200 issues in its
history, and has featured the biggest
names in basketball on its cover, in
articles, and on its famous SLAMups
posters, such as Lebron James and Kobe
Bryant.
• It was founded by publisher Dennis Page
at Harris Publications
SLAM Media Inc.
• SLAM Media Inc. was founded in 1994.
• SLAM's ownership has changed several times. Peterson Publishing bought
SLAM in 1998. In 2001, EMAP sold its US division to Primedia. When
Primedia left the magazine business in 2007, Source Interlink acquired a
majority of the company, including SLAM. In August 2017 SLAM was
acquired by an investment group lead by Dennis Page (Founder and
Publisher) and David Schnur (Executive Publisher). The new holding
company is SLAM Media Inc.
• It is based in New York City
• The magazine is now available to international (non-US) NBA fans, with
special editions, and the addition of Slam to digital stores, such as iTunes
Research Summary
• I have researched two publication companies. Haymarket media group
and SLAM media inc. there are many differences between the two
companies, As one of them is a special company that only produces
basketball magazines, while the other one is a private media group that
yields many publications throughout the world. Slam media Inc. was
started by 1994 while Haymarket media group only by 1999. Both
companies are famous worldwide with their publications as both
FourFourTwo and SLAM are well-known around the globe. However their
publications differ, both are Sport dealing magazines, but while one of
them interests football fans, the other is for basketball freaks. Similarity
between these two campanies is that they are targeting a similar age
group. The magazines they produce is for the age group between 12-40
years and mostly males. Even though these companies are similar inways
they still differ in many other aspects.

Research into existing sport magazines

  • 2. Introduction • After discussion with the tutor and group of class mates I have decided to focus on creating a sport magazine. The main reason behind it is that this subject matter is related to my after school activity. • My next As Media studies task is to research existing and well established sports magazines and analyze them in order to get a clear idea of how to make my own better and more appealing to the readers.
  • 4. Layout: The layout of the front cover creates an interest to college students and athletes who love sports. The text is represented with large font size to make it easier for the readers . Color: The colors used on this cover are black , grey , blue. The background is dark which implicates that only the main image is important. Typography and Language: The language used here is very modern, the font used is made to be interesting and appealing to the eyes of the readers. The masthead has a very unique message which will make athletes think about why sports are useful Mise-en-scene: The athlete is obviously the main image of the front cover. The image of the athlete reflects as in a real-game situation. The cover consists of formal writing which gives a pleasent attention to the target audience. Mode of address: The cover is focused on the main image, which is the athlete. It addresses mostly college athletes and ofcourse sportsman who wish to succeed.
  • 5. Layout: The layout of this front cover sends an interest to all sports fans, who enjoy to play and do sports in their free time. The text is shown with large font size to make it easily readable for the audience. Color: The colors used on this cover are mainly warm colors( yellow, red) but we can see blue as well. These clorors are associated with heightened emotions and passion as well as joy and playfulness. Mise-en-scene: The athlete is in the center here, which means that he is the main image of this front cover. His standing ovation to this sport shows us that its pretty dangerous and must be carefully played as we can see from his suit. Mode of address: The main person in this picture is ofcourse the athlete. The magazines main target audience is again sportsman and people who love sports and are comfortable with reading such articles. Language : The language used on this cover is formal. The effectiveness of this is to make it more appealing to readers as well as to show the importance of this magazine.
  • 6. Front Cover Design Tips • An attractive and intriguing front cover page should make the consumer to purchase the magazine. A good front cover is the main sales figure driver for the magazine. • The cover page has to have a main focus point to captivate the potential consumers, which is usually the model in the image but could also be the headline. • Use of any color is preferable as long as it looks good. People usually want to avoid colors such as green and orange in front covers. • Photography is preferred over illustration as it tends to sell better. • The masthead should be large to be appealing to the target audience . • The headline needs to be eye catching so that the consumers will take a glimpse look at it. The more attractive it is with different colors, the bbetter and more pleasing it is for the potential consumers. • The bigger cover line should use colors to attract the audience. Smaller color lines should usually go with black or white text.
  • 8. Layout: The layout of the magazines is similar. On both front covers the Masthead is on top of the page. On one magazine the text is only on the left side of the page, while on the other one it is wrapped around the main image to show the importance of the image. Images: Both of the images are similar, as both have sportsman on their front cover. In both cases the image is presented in a close-up to show the importance of the characters. The image tries to grab attention to readers who prefer to do sports as well. Color Scheme: The colors used in these front covers differ. The one on the left side uses colors such as black, grey and red to create an interest to the readers, while the magazine on the right uses green, white and yellow which is very eye- catchy to the readers and also visually appealing. Masthead: In both magazines the Masthead is well represented with huge letters on top of the page making it very easily readable and grabing the eyes of the target audience.
  • 10. Typography and Language: The font used in this content page is Serif as it grabs the attention of the audience and is very eye-catchy. The language that statements the target audience is appealing to all sports readers. Color Scheme: The colors used in this content page differ, as there are colors such as red, yelllow, black, green, etc. The use of these is to grab attention and make the magazine more tempting to the readers and ofcourse the target audience who mostly are people who love sports. Mise-en-scene: The background of this content page is very plain, which makes it easily readable. There is a huge Masthead on the top of the page. The pictures suit the magazine contents page perfectly as they are prepared to make the readers grab an interest.
  • 11. Layout: The layout of this content page is divided into two parts, 1/3 of text and 2/3 of images. Different type of font is used in the headings as in the subheadings. Color Scheme: The colors used here are black, blue, red and white. All these colors create an interest for the target spectators who wish to read the news about this magazine. The letters differ with color and size as well which brings care to a lot and makes the magazine much more pleasing.
  • 12. Content Page Design Tips • The design of the content page must be eye catching and functional. • Table of contents must be clearly visible and easy to understand. • Choice of fonts and sizes is essential to highlight brief summaries in the articles. • Use of colors should be intriguing to give a pleasant overview to the readers. • Graphics and text are not supposed to compete for attention but instead to work for a visually appealing layout. • Images used can be in different sizes to make it more pleasing to the readers. • Carefully selected images add interest to the magazine as they can be used as content preview. • It is essential to use headlines and quotes from the article. • Use of hierarchy will give sense or order and structure. • Use of grid system is to make sure that the content page has balance.
  • 14. Layout: The layout of this article page is mainly in text. As the main image in the top left corner provides assistance to the information written in text both are equally important for the readers. Color Scheme: The colors used in this article are always related to the type of text which is the article about. In this case the colors used are red, black, and white. The background of this page is also plain white which tells us that it was meant to be very simple and easily legible for the target audience. Typography and Language: The font size is pretty small, it is the way an article should be. The masthead is bigger as it has more importance, it is written in Serif Font. The language is simple, as it addresses mostly sportsman and of course teenagers. Mise-en-scene: The look of this magazine is very attractive as from the colors used, which are unique. The text used is simple and very pleasant to read for the target audience, the mix of there size shows which part of the text is most important and which one is less.
  • 15. Layout: The layout of this article contains mostly text. There is a main image on the right, which gives us an idea what the article is about. Mise-en-scene: The look of this magazine shows that it is a virtuous one. The main image shows that riding a bike is fun and enjoying for the ones who wish to do it. The text is small cased as the picture has more significance than the text. Color Scheme: The colors used here are very intriguing. The mix of different ones such as yellow, red, white, black that gives the onlookers a comfortable expression and style, and full of excitement to read this article and maybe even experience such activity in the future. Typography: The font which is used here is Serif, it is easy to read and most attractive to the readers. Article Spread Design Tips • The design should be simple, the layout should be engaging and easy to read. • Order of design should be followed by headline, intro copy and main copy. • Big blocks of text should not be broken up as the flow of the text columns need to be tidy and even. • Images and headlines are the most captivating. Both text and images should create a harmony on the page to make it absolutely pleasing to the readers. • The top part of the article is most appealing to the eye of the readers, therefore it is the most natural design. • The most visible area of an article is the top of the page, where it is most exposed to the eyes of the consumers.
  • 17. Research summary • After concluding my research into existing sports magazines, favorably analyzing Content pages, Front covers, Articles, I have had an impression of the amount of effort and work it takes to make such magazines. • The Front cover is always most important. As it is the cover it should look visually appealing to the customers and provide them with an interest in buying and reading the magazine. • The Masthead should be written in a large font size to make the magazine eye-catch to the customers and eligible as well for the readers. • The fonts and font sizes are always chosen specifically by the magazine, different magazine use very unalike types and other styles.

Haymarket produces content across print, web and mobile in the US, Germany, India and Hong Kong. • The founders of the Haymarket Media company were Michael Heseltine, Clive Labovitch.

  • 26.
  • 27. Research Summary • I have researched two publication companies. Haymarket media group and SLAM media inc. there are many differences between the two companies, As one of them is a special company that only produces basketball magazines, while the other one is a private media group that yields many publications throughout the world. Slam media Inc. was started by 1994 while Haymarket media group only by 1999. Both companies are famous worldwide with their publications as both FourFourTwo and SLAM are well-known around the globe. However their publications differ, both are Sport dealing magazines, but while one of them interests football fans, the other is for basketball freaks. Similarity between these two campanies is that they are targeting a similar age group. The magazines they produce is for the age group between 12-40 years and mostly males. Even though these companies are similar inways they still differ in many other aspects.
