Diagnose Faults in Commercial Refrigeration Unit
•Ice in drip catcher
• Unit runs all the time, temperature too cold
•Freezer runs all the time.Temperature too cold
• Freezer runs all the time.Temperature too warm
• Rapid ice buildup on the evaporator
• Door on freezer compartment freezes shut
• Freezer works then warm up
• Gradual reduction in freezing capacity
¡ Blown Fuse
§ Repair Fuse
¡ LowVoltage
§ Check outlet with voltmeter, should check 115V
Plus or Minus 10 percent
§ If circuit overload, either reduce load or have
electrician install Separate circuit
§ If unable to remedy any other way, Install Auto-
transformer
¡ Broken motor or temperature Control
§ Jumper across terminals of control, If unit runs and
connections are all tight, replace control
¡ Broken Relay
§ Check relay, replace if necessary
¡ Broken Overload
§ Check overload, replace if necessary
¡ Broken Compressor
§ Check compressor, replace if necessary
¡ BrokenTimer
§ Check withTest light and replace if necessary
¡ Defective Service Cord
§ Check with test light unit; if no circuit and current is
indicated at outlet, replaces or repair
¡ Broken lead to compressors, timer or Cold Control
§ Replace or Repair broken leads
¡ Repeated door opening
§ Instructor User
¡ Overloading of Shelves , blocking normal air
circulation in Cabinet
§ Instructor User
¡ Warm and hot foods placed in cabinet
§ Instructor user to allow foods to cool to room
temperature before placing in cabinet
¡ Poor door Seal
§ Level Cabinet, adjust door seal
¡ Interior light Stays on
§ Check light switch; if faulty , replace
¡ Refrigerator Section airflow control
§ Turn control knob to colder position. Check
airflow heater.
§ Check if damper is opening by removing grille.
With door open , damper should open. If Control
inoperative, replace control
¡ Freezer section grille not properly positioned
§ Reposition grille
¡ Cold control knob set at too warm a position,
not allowing unit to operate often enough.
§ Turn knob to colder position
¡ Freezer fan not properly running
§ Replace fan, Fan Switch, or DefectingWiring
¡ Defective intake valve
§ Replace Motor Compressor
¡ Air duct seal not properly sealed or positioned
§ Check and Reseal or Put in Correct Position
¡ Refrigerator section airflow control knob
turned to coldest position
§ Turn control knob to warmer position
¡ Airflow Control remain open
§ Remove obstruction
¡ Broken Airflow Control
§ Replace control
¡ Broken Airflow Heater
§ Replace heater
¡ Fan motor not running
§ Check and replace fan motor if necessary
¡ Cold Control set tooWarm or Broken
§ Check and replace if Necessary
¡ Finned Evaporator Blocked with Ice
§ Check defrost heater thermostat or timer. Either
one of these could cause this condition
¡ Storage of Refrigerant
§ Check for Leak, Repair, Evacuate and Recharge
System
¡ Not enough air Circulation around Cabinet
§ Relocate cabinet or provide Clearance to Allow
Sufficient Circulation
¡ Dirty Condenser or Obstructed Condenser
Ducts
§ Clean the Condenser and ducts
¡ Poor Door Seal
§ Level cabinet , Adjust Door Seal
¡ Too Many Door Opening
§ Instruct Customer
¡ Cold Control Knob Improperly Set
§ Turn Knob toWarmer Position
¡ Cold Control Capillary not Properly Clamped
to Evaporator
§ Tighten Clamp or Reposition
¡ Broken Cold Control
§ Check Control, Replace if Necessary
¡ Not enough Air Circulation around Cabinet or
Air Circulation is Restricted
§ Relocate Cabinet or Provides Proper Clearances
Around Cabinet –Remove Restriction
¡ Poor Door Seal
§ Check and Make Necessary Adjustments.
¡ Freezing Large Quantities of Ice Cubes, or
Heavy LoadingAfter Shopping
§ Explain to Customer that Heavy Loading Causes
Long RunningTime.
¡ Refrigerant Charge
§ Undercharge or Overcharges –Check, Evacuate and
Recharge with Proper Charge
¡ RoomTemperature tooWarm
§ Ventilate room as much as Possible

§ Check Control; if it Allows unit to Operate all time,
