1. TOP TEN LIST OF CONTRIBUTIONS
AND ACHIEVEMENTS FROM
RENAISSANCE
BY
FAY AGGELOPOULOU
2. 1.Modern printing
• One of the most important inventions of the time, which
allowed the mass reproduction of knowledge, is the modern
printing press. It was the German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg,
who invented the printing press, who allowed him to print the 42-
line Bible. This copy of the Bible owes its name to the number of
lines printed on each page. At that time the wood carving
technique was used for printing. This printing technique had many
limitations. It was necessary to use splints, which wear quickly
and do not allow many copies to be printed quickly. The machine
invented by Gutenberg is really an adaptation of the presses used
to squeeze the juice from the grapes. Modern printing has
allowed book production to increase exponentially in Europe.
3. 2.Military geometric compass
• Galilei also invented the military geometric compass, which
consists of two arms with scaling scales that allow different
mathematical functions to be performed. Galilei patented this
invention and is producing it in a huge way.Its commercial success
is due to the fact that the inventor gave this instrument to
important personalities of the time and also gave open lessons on
how to use it. Galileo devoted himself to astronomical
observations and discovered various stellar bodies, such as
Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
4. 3.Microscope
• In 1590, Zacharias Janssen invented the microscope and it is also
thought that it could be linked to the invention of the telescope.
He was a neighbor of Hans Lippershey and was also a lens
maker.Although the telescope's invention is still unclear, the
microscope says Janssen could have invented it himself or with
the help of his father. Its microscope was 9 magnifications and
Janssen designed it for use by people with severe vision problems.
5. 4.Calculation rule
• Although Galileo Galilei had already described it, it is believed
that it was John Napier in 1614 who invented the calculation
rule. This instrument with different measurement scales was used
as an analog computer to perform different mathematical
functions. Thanks to the calculation rule, it was possible to
multiply and separate from addiction and subtraction.
6. 5. The rod of Jacob
• In astronomy, the Jacob or ballastella rod is an instrument that
allows the height of celestial bodies to be measured. It is believed
to have been invented by Levi ben Gerson or Jacob Ben Makir.
During the Renaissance, this instrument played an important role
in the development of astronomy. The Dutch astronomer Metius
(Adriaan Adriaanszoon) used it to measure the position of stars.
Ballastella was improved by the German mathematician Gemma
Frisius. In the early 18th century, thanks to the appearance of
other instruments, the Jacob's rod ceased to be obsolete.
7. 6.Compass:
• The Chinese and the compass also helped the Europeans make their
great discoveries. The compass reaches Europe during the
Renaissance. The Chinese and Arabs have already used it for their
orientation. Initially the magnetized needles were left in jars filled with
water and appeared north, but over time this invention improved and
the "dry compass" was developed. Some argue that the Italian Flavio
Gioia was the inventor of the dry compass, which is nothing more than a
needle on a shaft inside a box. This box is called a bússola, hence the
name compass.
8. 7.Berbiquí
• The berequí, an important tool in carpentry and joinery, was
invented in the 15th century. From the date, large berequíes were
made in Europe, which were propelled from the water by a
system of tools and used to drill large logs. The first copy of this
type is thought to have originated in the Flemish region
9. 8.Bike
• Although many of his inventions were not built, Leonardo da
Vinci is considered the most important inventor of the
Renaissance.Among the inventions of the Codez Atlanticus project
There is a bicycle design with all the features of any current
bicycle: wheels, gear chain and seat. These drawings are stored in
the Ambrosiana Library in Milan
10. 9.Helicopter
• Da Vinci also towed the first prototype of a helicopter. The
air screw was designed under the condition that, like a screw
going up, it would also lift a body driven by a
screw.Apparently one of Da Vinci's dreams was that man
could fly as he also designed a flying machine inspired by the
physiognomy of bats.
11. 10.Skimmer
• Another of the inventor's dreams was aquatic exploration.
That's why he designed a diving model. This diving suit
should be made of leather and reed air tube.He also found a
bag to urinate in his design. Leonardo da Vinci, on the other
hand, also developed the first car model. The motor vehicle
of this inventor had to be made of wood and would move
thanks to the power created by the mediation of many
gears, ie the mechanisms.
