There were two important religions in this period - Catholic and Protestant. Queen Mary I ruled from 1553-1558 and strongly adhered to Catholicism, persecuting Protestants by burning them alive. Her sister, Queen Elizabeth I, ruled from 1558-1603 and restored Protestantism as the official religion while allowing private Catholic practice to avoid further violence over religion. She banned religious plays outside of church to help reduce religious conflicts.
