This document discusses areas of the maxilla and mandible that may require relief when fabricating a denture, as well as methods for providing relief. The areas that may need relief include the palate, midline fractures, prominent bony areas, and sensitive areas like the incisive papilla. Relief can be achieved by using selective pressure or mucostatic impression techniques, or by selectively adding plaster or compound to the impression. Relief can also be done on the cast or final denture by using tin foil, low-speed drilling, or ensuring accurate registration of tissues requiring relief. The depth of relief required depends on the compressibility and thickness of the mucosa in the area.
