Improvements of navigator in IDEA StatiCa RCS
Main groups:
 Project Data
 Design
 Checks
 Report
The changes were motivated by introduction of new functionality: the
design of necessary reinforcement (see below). All items, which are needed
for the design of the reinforcement, have to be defined in advance.
Therefore the items of the navigator follow this logic. It corresponds with
the workflow of engineer at the same time. The items, which are known
from preliminary design of cross-sectional shape and from structural
analysis, go first.
The lists of all entities (Sections, Design Members, and Reinforced Cross-Sections) contained
in the project are localized into group Project Data of the navigator. Individual items are
clearly listed in main window. It improves the understandability and the overview.

List of “Sections” along the length of all Design Members, which occur in the project:
Data of “Design Members” are removed from the navigator, which brought more logic
arrangement and simplification. Design members can be added, edited, and deleted, and the
status of the assessment is shown for individual members.
The entity “Reinforced Cross-Section” joints a property of cross-sectional shape and its
reinforcement. Linking those two properties together we obtain the representatives, which are
then used for individual Sections along the length of Design Members. The list of Reinforced
Cross-Sections shows these representatives.

User preferences for css dimensions
User preferences for dimensions of cross-section can be set for the checks of shear, torsion,
crack width, and deflection in new group User Settings. These User Settings replace and
extend old functionality known as Set for shear and Set for torsion.

Improvements in Concrete and Prestressing
Optimization of angle θ
Optimization of angle θ is used for the check of strength in shear, torsion, and the interaction
of all internal forces. The objective of the project was to find such angle θ, which would
enable optimum use of all materials in the cross-section – concrete in compression diagonal,
shear reinforcement (stirrups and bent-up bars), and longitudinal reinforcement. Final goal is
to improve the economy of the design compare to common approach when the user specifies
the angle θ directly.

Crack width for members with large concrete cover
Alternative methods for the calculation of crack width were introduced, specifically
maximum crack spacing sr,max (provision 7.3.4 (3)) can now be taken according to French and
German Annexes. The advantage is that these approaches provide more realistic crack width
for members with large concrete cover.
Improvements in Concrete
Slab on trapezoidal steel sheet
New type of cross-section - slab on corrugated (trapezoidal) steel sheet has been introduced.
Trapezoidal steel sheets are frequently used as simple permanent shuttering floor systems,
especially in building renovation, eventually in industrial buildings. Slabs on trapezoidal steel
sheets are usually continuous, therefore in the section above the support it is necessary to
resist negative bending moments by additional bars.

New reinforcement templates for one-way slabs
The project aims to improve the work with one-way slab in RCS. It is common practice in
building construction that slabs and walls are, with respect to laboriousness, reinforced by
basic reinforcement grid, and consecutively additional reinforcement bars are supplemented in
places that are not sufficiently reinforced. To make the manufacturing of reinforcement cage
simple, the reinforcement is added into the gaps or the bars of basic grid are duplicated.
Additional bars are therefore designed always in multiples of the basic grid.
New reinforcement templates for slab on trapezoidal steel sheet, and the improvements of
existing templates for one-way slabs have been implemented - the possibility to input:
 additional reinforcement bars,
 shear links.

Design of necessary reinforcement
The objective of the project was to enable fast and precise design of the reinforcement
necessary to comply ULS and SLS conditions, specifically the requirements for strength in
flexure, shear, torsion, interaction and the limitations for crack width.
The design is not limited to necessary areas. Number and diameter of reinforcement bars are
calculated in real-time when selecting reinforcement template.
The amount of shear and longitudinal reinforcement is optimized for all allowable angles θ so
that the weight of the sum of both types of the reinforcement is minimized (calculated for 1 m
of the member). Corresponding force in longitudinal reinforcement is respected in the design.
The reinforcement design can be performed on 1D non-prestressed reinforced members and
one-way slabs. The design respects some detailing rules (number of bars, distances, …). New
reinforcement templates have been introduced for one-way slabs with additional bars and
links.

Liquid retaining and containment structures
The calculation of crack width for one-way and two-way slabs of liquid retaining and
containment structures according to EN 1992-3 has been implemented
 Classification of tightness
 Check of depth of compression zone

M-N-rotation diagram
M-N-rotation diagram was introduced as a new functionality into standard EN an all annexes
(so far in NL only). The functionality was extended so that it can be used for the calculation
of properties of plastic hinges in Pushover Method.

Improvements in Prestressing
New way of calculation of equivalent load
The objective of the project was to increase the speed of UI response by reducing the number
of load impulses from the load equivalent to the effects of prestressing. Significant
improvement was achieved by cumulating load impulses from all tendons and distributing
concentrated forces into line load with respect to existing mesh, see the table below.
Number of tendons in the
beam
Reduction of number of
impulses
Speed increase of UI
1 no reduction no increase
10 5 times 2 times
100 20 times 5 times
Considerable speed increase has also been achieved in the structural analysis in the case of
large structure with large amount of tendons.

Multiple operations with tendons
This part of the development aims to improve the input and editing of the tendons. New
functionality has been introduced:
 Multiple editing of tendon properties on the selection of tendons
 Multiple actions with selection of tendons (deleting, copying, moving, exports)
The user selects the tendons and opens the dialog of properties. All properties, which are
common for tendon selection, will be displayed. Empty editbox appears in case of different
property values. The user can change any property, and changed properties are saved.

Alternative presentation of the moment of resistance of prestressed section
A customer asked for new functionality to present the moment of resistance of prestressed
section in other way than it is currently done (for better understanding).
New form reliability condition can be then written as RpppE MeNM  0
, where the left-hand
side of the equation contains generally the effects of the external load and the primary effects
of the decompression prestressing force and the right-hand side stores the resistance of the
cross-section resulting only from the part of the stress-strain diagram above the level of the
decompression stress according to figure below. In this situation, the primary effects of the
prestressing are considered to be the external force in the cross-section. Moment M0

BIM
Import of selected part of the structure into BIM
The aim was to allow the user to define only a part of the structure to import from the AXIS
VM project. This new functionality makes his work well organized and ordered, and the
response of the program is faster. The user can select the items for import including the
groups created by AXIS VM as logic units.

User-defined internal forces
The objective is to enable an effective way of the design of 3D structures imported from
external FEA packages into IDEA StatiCa. Any effect of loads (calculated elsewhere) can
now be imported into IDEA StatiCa in tabular form (excel spreadsheet). Afterwards load
groups are defined, and all specialized features of IDEA StatiCa can be used including detail
and comprehensive sectional design.

All items, which are needed for the design of the reinforcement, have to be defined in advance. Therefore the items of the navigator follow this logic. It corresponds with the workflow of engineer at the same time. The items, which are known from preliminary design of cross-sectional shape and from structural analysis, go first. The lists of all entities (Sections, Design Members, and Reinforced Cross-Sections) contained in the project are localized into group Project Data of the navigator. Individual items are clearly listed in main window. It improves the understandability and the overview.

Design members can be added, edited, and deleted, and the status of the assessment is shown for individual members. The entity “Reinforced Cross-Section” joints a property of cross-sectional shape and its reinforcement. Linking those two properties together we obtain the representatives, which are then used for individual Sections along the length of Design Members. The list of Reinforced Cross-Sections shows these representatives.

These User Settings replace and extend old functionality known as Set for shear and Set for torsion.

The objective of the project was to find such angle θ, which would enable optimum use of all materials in the cross-section – concrete in compression diagonal, shear reinforcement (stirrups and bent-up bars), and longitudinal reinforcement. Final goal is to improve the economy of the design compare to common approach when the user specifies the angle θ directly.
  • 7. page 7/16 Release notes Concrete, Prestressing v6 © IDEA BE | C-mine 12 3600 Genk België tel.: +32 89 201 714 Web: www.idea-rs.be Mail: info@idea-rs.be Crack width for members with large concrete cover Alternative methods for the calculation of crack width were introduced, specifically maximum crack spacing sr,max (provision 7.3.4 (3)) can now be taken according to French and German Annexes. The advantage is that these approaches provide more realistic crack width for members with large concrete cover. Improvements in Concrete Slab on trapezoidal steel sheet New type of cross-section - slab on corrugated (trapezoidal) steel sheet has been introduced. Trapezoidal steel sheets are frequently used as simple permanent shuttering floor systems, especially in building renovation, eventually in industrial buildings. Slabs on trapezoidal steel sheets are usually continuous, therefore in the section above the support it is necessary to resist negative bending moments by additional bars.
  • 8. page 8/16 Release notes Concrete, Prestressing v6 © IDEA BE | C-mine 12 3600 Genk België tel.: +32 89 201 714 Web: www.idea-rs.be Mail: info@idea-rs.be New reinforcement templates for one-way slabs The project aims to improve the work with one-way slab in RCS. It is common practice in building construction that slabs and walls are, with respect to laboriousness, reinforced by basic reinforcement grid, and consecutively additional reinforcement bars are supplemented in places that are not sufficiently reinforced. To make the manufacturing of reinforcement cage simple, the reinforcement is added into the gaps or the bars of basic grid are duplicated. Additional bars are therefore designed always in multiples of the basic grid. New reinforcement templates for slab on trapezoidal steel sheet, and the improvements of existing templates for one-way slabs have been implemented - the possibility to input:  additional reinforcement bars,  shear links.
  • 9. page 9/16 Release notes Concrete, Prestressing v6 © IDEA BE | C-mine 12 3600 Genk België tel.: +32 89 201 714 Web: www.idea-rs.be Mail: info@idea-rs.be Design of necessary reinforcement The objective of the project was to enable fast and precise design of the reinforcement necessary to comply ULS and SLS conditions, specifically the requirements for strength in flexure, shear, torsion, interaction and the limitations for crack width. The design is not limited to necessary areas. Number and diameter of reinforcement bars are calculated in real-time when selecting reinforcement template. The amount of shear and longitudinal reinforcement is optimized for all allowable angles θ so that the weight of the sum of both types of the reinforcement is minimized (calculated for 1 m of the member). Corresponding force in longitudinal reinforcement is respected in the design. The reinforcement design can be performed on 1D non-prestressed reinforced members and one-way slabs. The design respects some detailing rules (number of bars, distances, …). New reinforcement templates have been introduced for one-way slabs with additional bars and links.

The functionality was extended so that it can be used for the calculation of properties of plastic hinges in Pushover Method.
  • 12. page 12/16 Release notes Concrete, Prestressing v6 © IDEA BE | C-mine 12 3600 Genk België tel.: +32 89 201 714 Web: www.idea-rs.be Mail: info@idea-rs.be Improvements in Prestressing New way of calculation of equivalent load The objective of the project was to increase the speed of UI response by reducing the number of load impulses from the load equivalent to the effects of prestressing. Significant improvement was achieved by cumulating load impulses from all tendons and distributing concentrated forces into line load with respect to existing mesh, see the table below. Number of tendons in the beam Reduction of number of impulses Speed increase of UI 1 no reduction no increase 10 5 times 2 times 100 20 times 5 times Considerable speed increase has also been achieved in the structural analysis in the case of large structure with large amount of tendons.

New functionality has been introduced:  Multiple editing of tendon properties on the selection of tendons  Multiple actions with selection of tendons (deleting, copying, moving, exports) The user selects the tendons and opens the dialog of properties. All properties, which are common for tendon selection, will be displayed. Empty editbox appears in case of different property values. The user can change any property, and changed properties are saved.
  • 14. page 14/16 Release notes Concrete, Prestressing v6 © IDEA BE | C-mine 12 3600 Genk België tel.: +32 89 201 714 Web: www.idea-rs.be Mail: info@idea-rs.be Alternative presentation of the moment of resistance of prestressed section A customer asked for new functionality to present the moment of resistance of prestressed section in other way than it is currently done (for better understanding). New form reliability condition can be then written as RpppE MeNM  0 , where the left-hand side of the equation contains generally the effects of the external load and the primary effects of the decompression prestressing force and the right-hand side stores the resistance of the cross-section resulting only from the part of the stress-strain diagram above the level of the decompression stress according to figure below. In this situation, the primary effects of the prestressing are considered to be the external force in the cross-section. Moment M0 pp = N0 ppep results in the state of decompression. Vestigial capacity of the prestressing reinforcement p p 0 ud p pa fpd "vestigial" capacity Pp

This new functionality makes his work well organized and ordered, and the response of the program is faster. The user can select the items for import including the groups created by AXIS VM as logic units.
  • 16. page 16/16 Release notes Concrete, Prestressing v6 © IDEA BE | C-mine 12 3600 Genk België tel.: +32 89 201 714 Web: www.idea-rs.be Mail: info@idea-rs.be User-defined internal forces The objective is to enable an effective way of the design of 3D structures imported from external FEA packages into IDEA StatiCa. Any effect of loads (calculated elsewhere) can now be imported into IDEA StatiCa in tabular form (excel spreadsheet). Afterwards load groups are defined, and all specialized features of IDEA StatiCa can be used including detail and comprehensive sectional design.
