This document discusses opportunities for reinventing library services in Westfield for the 21st century. It identifies 4 main opportunities: 1) Creating customizable spaces for socializing, collaborating, and creativity now that less space is needed for books. 2) Harnessing technology to automate processes and increase efficiency. 3) Making the library a community hub through partnerships. 4) Providing dynamic hands-on learning through makerspaces and technology labs. The director thanks supporters and encourages involvement to help realize these opportunities.
Envisioning the library of the future is a major research project undertaken by the Arts Council in 2012/13 that will help us to understand the future for libraries, and how we can enable them to develop.
Sixteen years ago, American Libraries published Mark Y. Herring’s essay “Ten Reasons Why the Internet Is No Substitute for a Library” (April 2001). Technology has improved exponentially since then—social media didn’t even exist yet. But even the smartest phone’s intelligence is limited by paywalls, Twitter trolls, fake news, and other hazards of online life. Here are 10 reasons why libraries are still better than the internet.
1. Libraries are safer spaces.
2. Libraries respect history.
3. Librarians digitize influential primary sources.
4. Librarians are leaders in increasing online access to scholarly information.
5. Librarians are publishers.
6. Libraries host makerspaces.
7. Librarians can help you sort the real news from the fake.
8. Librarians guide you to exactly what you need.
9. Librarians do not track your reading or search history to sell you things.
10. Librarians do not censor.

Stories to tell: The making of our digital nation. April 2010 Rose Holley
A new type of digital volunteer is quietly adding to the sum of knowledge of our history and heritage on the web. Ordinary Australians have helped correct millions of lines of text in the National Library of Australia's Newspaper Digitisation Program. They have contributed thousands of photographs to the national digital picture collection. The presentation describes these projects and others from libraries and archives that you can help with. Everyone can help to improve, describe and create our digital heritage.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

FOSTERING COMMUNITY DIALOGUES

COMMUNITY TOOLS FOR CREATING
14. When less space is required to store
books due to increasing eBook usage and
on-demand delivery of print books,
more space can be devoted to people for
connecting, collaborating, and creating.
OPPORTUNITY#1
16. When technological innovations can be
harnessed and used as tools to automate
repetitive processes and increase
efficiency, it frees us to do work that is
more creative, engaging, and inspired.
OPPORTUNITY#2
18. When curiosity, cooperation, and
inclusion are embedded in all policies
and approaches, libraries can go
beyond simply informing residents, to
actually building community.
OPPORTUNITY#3
20. When libraries connect the community
to both the knowledge and the tools for
creating, we turn people from just
information consumers to the makers,
builders, and doers of the future.
OPPORTUNITY#4
