This document provides rules for conjugating regular verbs in English for the present, past, and future tenses. In the present tense, verbs take an 's' ending when the subject is he, she, or it. Verbs ending in s, x, z, ch, or sh add 'es'. Verbs ending in y change to i and add es if preceded by a consonant. In the past tense, most verbs add 'ed', while some double the final consonant or just add 'd'. The future tense uses will or shall with the basic verb form.

2. When the subject is he, she, or it, add s to the verb. When the subject is I, you, we, or they, do not add s to the verb . Verbs that end in s, x, z, ch, or sh add es . With verbs that end in y and have a consonant before it, change the y to i and add es . run- He run s. She run s. The dog run s. I cry. You run. We read. 3. REMEMBER… When the subject is the third person singular ( he, she, it ), use the verb in the s form : begins Ex: The class begins at 9:00 o’clock. walks José walks to the train station.

4. When the verb ends in ch, sh, x, z and s , add es . Verb Add es catch catches wash washes wax waxes buzz buzzes guess guesses

5. Verbs that end in y: When a verb ends with y and there is a vowel before it, you add an s. ex. play-plays When the verb ends in y and there is a consonant before it, you change the y to an i and add es. ex. cry-cries

6. PAST TENSE For most verbs, add ed . When a short verb ends in one vowel and a consonant, double the consonant and add ed . When a verb ends in e, just add d . 7. Future Tense Use the basic form of the verb with the helping verb will or shall. hop – will hop fly – shall fly
