Regional varieties of Bangla in Rajshahi division
Chapai Nawabgonj: Chapai Nawabganj is a district in Northern Bangladesh. It is a part of the
Rajshahi Division. Chapai Nawabganj district comprises four thanas or upazilla which are Bholahat
Upazila, Gomastapur Upazila, Nachole Upazila, Nawabganj Sadar Upazila and Shibganj Upazila.
There are three municipalities which are Nawabganj Sadar, Shibganj and Rohanpur. The people of
Chapai Nawabgonj use the Bangla language but have their own dialect. They communicate with
each other by their own language. The characteristics of their language are different from the
standard form of Bangla language. Those are given below:
When the people of Chapai-Nawabgonj address someone with ‘tumi’ in English ‘you’ and ask
him/her any question, they often add Bangla / ¨ / at the end of the last word of the question. They
pronounce / aa / instead of / a / For example:
Standard Bangla Dialect English
Tumi ki vat khaba? Tui ki vat khabaa? Will you buy a pen?
Tumi ki kal jaba? Tui ki kail jabaa? Will you go tomorrow?
Tomra ki kajta korba? Tora ki kajta koirbaa? Will you do the work?
On the other hand, when they address someone with ‘aponi’ in English ‘you’ and ask
him/her any question, they often add Bangla at the first part of the last word of the question. They
pronounce / aa / instead of / a / For example:

Aponi ki vat khaben? Hponi ki vat khaaben?
Aponi ki kalke jaben? Aponi ki kalka jaaben?
They also add Bangla / ¨ / in many words. For example:

Aj Robibar Aaij Roibibar. Today is Sunday.
Kal bari jabo. Kaail bari jaibo. Tomorrow I will go home.
Aste gari chalao. Haalaa gari chalao. Drive slowly.
Ssssss
They use /h/ in the first person and /ghe/ instead of der in the first person and third person
plural number. For example:

Ami vat khai Hami vat khai I eat rice.
Amar nam Mita. Hamar nam Mita. My name is Mita.
Amake akti kolom dao. Hamake akta kolom dao. Please give me a pen.
Amader akti goru ache. Hamarghe akta goru ache. We have a cow.
Tader akti boro bagan ache. Targhe akta boro bagan ache. They have a big garden.
They also add /h/ in many words. For example:

Tar duti bon ache. Tar duta bohin ache. He has two sisters.
Tini akti resmi shari
porechilen.
Tini akta resmi sharhi
pinhaachilen.
She was wearing a silken
sari.
Aste gari chalao. Haalaa gari chalao. Drive slowly.
Gari ti ki soja Dhaka jai? Gari taa ki sojha Dhaka jai? Is this a direct train to
Dhaka?
Se niomito mosjide jai. Se niomito Mohojid a jai. He goes to Mosque regularly.
Tumi kon class a poro? Tumi kon caalas a porho? What class do you read in?
They use /laagaa/ instead of /jonno/ in English /for/. For example:

Se amar jonno apekha korbe. Se hamar laagaa apekha korbe. She will wait for me.
Meramoter jonno rasta
bondho.
Meramoter laagaa rasta
bondho.
The road is closed for
repairing.
Koster jonno khama chaichi. Koster laagaa khoma chahachi. Kindly excuse me for the
trouble.
When they address someone with ‘aponi’ and ‘tumi’ in English ‘you’ and ask him/her any question,
they often add /g/ /wR/ at the end of the sentence. On the other hand, when they address someone
with ‘tui’ in English ‘you’, they often add / ‡i / /re/. For example:

Tumi kothai kaj karo? Tumi kunthe kam karo g? Where do you work?
Tomar nam ki ? Tomar nam ki g ? What is your name?
Tumi kothai jachchho? Tumi kunthe jaacho g? Where are you going?
Tui kothai kaj koris? Tui kunthe kaj koris re? Where do you work?
Tor nam ki? Tor nam ki re? What is your name?
Tui kothai jassis? Tui kunthe jachis re? Where are you going?
They use /l/ instead of /n/ in some words. For example:

Somoi nosto korona. Somoi losto korona. Don’t waste your time.
Amar kache nagod taka nei. Hamar kache lagod taka nai. I do not have any cash.
Dhar nibe na dibeo na. Dhar libi naa dibio naa. Neither borrow nor lend
Tini akti nil shari porichilen. Tini akta lil sharhi pinhechilen. She was wearing a blue sari.
They use /thaakaa/ or /chaahaa/ instead of /theke/ or /chee/. For example:

Amar bari theke nodir durotto
dui kilometer.
Hamar bari thaakaa loddir
durotto dui kilometer.
The distance between the
river and my house are two
kilometers.
Rohim sorkari chakri theke
abosor niechen.
Rohim sorkari chakri thaakaa
abosor niaachen.
Rohim has retired from
Government service.
Ami hatar chee gari chora
pochondo kori.
Ami hatar chaahaa gari
chorhaa pason kori.
I prefer riding to walking.
Aponi ki amar chee baose
boro?
Aponi ki amar chaahaa baose
boro?
Are you older than me?
In the plural form the Noun, they use /gala/ instead of /gulo/. For example:

Amgulo nie aso. Amgala liaa aso. Bring Mangoes.
Kathigulo badho. Kathigala bandho. Pack these sticks.
They use /thua/ instead of /rakha/. For example:
Standard Bangla Dialect English
Basonpotrogulo take tule
rakho.
Basonpotrogala take tule thua. Put the utensils back on the
table.
Kolomti tebil ar opor rakho. Kolomta tebil ar upor thuao. Put the pen on the table.
Tini dari rekchen. Tini dari thuaachen. He wears a beard.
Takata tomar kache rekhe dao. Takata tomar kache thuaa dao. Keep the money with you.
They use /nu/ instead of /lam/. For example:

Ami take dekte giachilam. Hami take dekte giachinu. I went to see him.
Ami tomake sahajjo korte
sikar korechilam.
Hami tomake sahajjo korte
sikar koraachinu.
I promised to help you.
Ami take box khulte dilam. Hami take box khulte dinu. I allowed him to open the
box.

  • 1. Regional varieties of Bangla in Rajshahi division Chapai Nawabgonj: Chapai Nawabganj is a district in Northern Bangladesh. It is a part of the Rajshahi Division. Chapai Nawabganj district comprises four thanas or upazilla which are Bholahat Upazila, Gomastapur Upazila, Nachole Upazila, Nawabganj Sadar Upazila and Shibganj Upazila. There are three municipalities which are Nawabganj Sadar, Shibganj and Rohanpur. The people of Chapai Nawabgonj use the Bangla language but have their own dialect. They communicate with each other by their own language. The characteristics of their language are different from the standard form of Bangla language. Those are given below: When the people of Chapai-Nawabgonj address someone with ‘tumi’ in English ‘you’ and ask him/her any question, they often add Bangla / ¨ / at the end of the last word of the question. They pronounce / aa / instead of / a / For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Tumi ki vat khaba? Tui ki vat khabaa? Will you buy a pen? Tumi ki kal jaba? Tui ki kail jabaa? Will you go tomorrow? Tomra ki kajta korba? Tora ki kajta koirbaa? Will you do the work? On the other hand, when they address someone with ‘aponi’ in English ‘you’ and ask him/her any question, they often add Bangla at the first part of the last word of the question. They pronounce / aa / instead of / a / For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Aponi ki vat khaben? Hponi ki vat khaaben? Aponi ki kalke jaben? Aponi ki kalka jaaben? They also add Bangla / ¨ / in many words. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Aj Robibar Aaij Roibibar. Today is Sunday. Kal bari jabo. Kaail bari jaibo. Tomorrow I will go home.   • 2. They use /h/ in the first person and /ghe/ instead of der in the first person and third person plural number. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Ami vat khai Hami vat khai I eat rice. Amar nam Mita. Hamar nam Mita. My name is Mita. Amake akti kolom dao. Hamake akta kolom dao. Please give me a pen. Amader akti goru ache. Hamarghe akta goru ache. We have a cow. Tader akti boro bagan ache. Targhe akta boro bagan ache. They have a big garden. They also add /h/ in many words. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Tar duti bon ache. Tar duta bohin ache. He has two sisters. Tini akti resmi shari porechilen. Tini akta resmi sharhi pinhaachilen. She was wearing a silken sari. Aste gari chalao. Haalaa gari chalao. Drive slowly. Gari ti ki soja Dhaka jai? Gari taa ki sojha Dhaka jai? Is this a direct train to Dhaka? Se niomito mosjide jai. Se niomito Mohojid a jai. He goes to Mosque regularly. Tumi kon class a poro? Tumi kon caalas a porho? What class do you read in? They use /laagaa/ instead of /jonno/ in English /for/. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Se amar jonno apekha korbe. Se hamar laagaa apekha korbe. She will wait for me. Meramoter jonno rasta bondho. Meramoter laagaa rasta bondho. The road is closed for repairing. Koster jonno khama chaichi. Koster laagaa khoma chahachi. Kindly excuse me for the trouble. When they address someone with ‘aponi’ and ‘tumi’ in English ‘you’ and ask him/her any question, they often add /g/ /wR/ at the end of the sentence. On the other hand, when they address someone with ‘tui’ in English ‘you’, they often add / ‡i / /re/. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Tumi kothai kaj karo? Tumi kunthe kam karo g? Where do you work? Tomar nam ki ? Tomar nam ki g ? What is your name? Tumi kothai jachchho? Tumi kunthe jaacho g? Where are you going? Tui kothai kaj koris? Tui kunthe kaj koris re? Where do you work? Tor nam ki? Tor nam ki re? What is your name? Tui kothai jassis? Tui kunthe jachis re? Where are you going?
  • 3. They use /l/ instead of /n/ in some words. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Somoi nosto korona. Somoi losto korona. Don’t waste your time. Amar kache nagod taka nei. Hamar kache lagod taka nai. I do not have any cash. Dhar nibe na dibeo na. Dhar libi naa dibio naa. Neither borrow nor lend Tini akti nil shari porichilen. Tini akta lil sharhi pinhechilen. She was wearing a blue sari. They use /thaakaa/ or /chaahaa/ instead of /theke/ or /chee/. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Amar bari theke nodir durotto dui kilometer. Hamar bari thaakaa loddir durotto dui kilometer. The distance between the river and my house are two kilometers. Rohim sorkari chakri theke abosor niechen. Rohim sorkari chakri thaakaa abosor niaachen. Rohim has retired from Government service. Ami hatar chee gari chora pochondo kori. Ami hatar chaahaa gari chorhaa pason kori. I prefer riding to walking. Aponi ki amar chee baose boro? Aponi ki amar chaahaa baose boro? Are you older than me? In the plural form the Noun, they use /gala/ instead of /gulo/. For example: Standard Bangla Dialect English Amgulo nie aso. Amgala liaa aso. Bring Mangoes. Kathigulo badho. Kathigala bandho. Pack these sticks. They use /thua/ instead of /rakha/.
