Learn about Spanish verbs. In Spanish, there are three types of verbs: -at, -er and -ir ending. Also, there are two types of verbs based on their conjugation - regular and irregular. This lesson is an introduction to the types of verbs in Spanish.
4. Structure of a verb
The verbs used in Spanish consists of two parts:
stem and root.

6. Regular verbs
Regular verbs are those verbs in which the stem doesn’t change,
but the root changes based on the subject.
Example: hablar (to speak)
Yo hablo
Tú hablas
In both cases, the stem (habl) doesn’t change, but the root (-ar)
changes in both.

7. Irregular verbs
They do not obey any particular rule of verb conjugation based on the
subject.
Example: estar and tener
Yo estoy
Tú tienes

8. Notes:
In Spanish verbs, the –ar, -er and –ir part are the roots and the
rest part is the stem.
Regular verbs are root-changing verbs, i.e. the verb conjugation is
different for different subjects and only the root changes while
the stem remains intact.
In irregular verbs, both the stem and root may change, that is,
they do not adhere to any particular rule of verb conjugation.
