The Alphabets There are 11 vowels in Bengali and each of the vowels have a form called “Matra” which can be attached to the consonants to create new meaningful words. There are 39 consonants in Bengali which are pronounced with the Matra’s from the 11 vowels. The Vowel Matra (using the consonant  ক  (Ko) as an example) অ  This does not have any matra, it only has O sound আ   The matra of this is called Akar e.g  কা  ( ka) ই   The matra of this is called Rosh-shi-kar e.g.   কি (ki) ঈ   The matra of this is called Dir-ghi-kar e.g.  কী   (kee) উ   The matra of this is called Rosh-sho-ukar e.g.  কু   (ku) ঊ   The matra of this is called Dir-gho-ukar e.g.  কূ   (kuu) ঋ   The matra of this is called Ree kar e.g.  কৃ   (kri) এ   The matra of this is calle Ae kar e.g.  কে   (ke) ঐ   The matra of this is called Oye kar e.g.   কৈ   (koi) ও   The matra of this is called Oo kar e.g.  কো   (koo) ঔ   The matra of this is called Oow kar e.g.  কৌ   (kow)

Some Basic Sentences We play in the field: Amra mathh e kheli  আমরা মাঠে খেলি। This book is mine: Ei boi ta amar   বইটা আমার। The car is yours: Gari ta tomar   গাড়িটা তোমার। His/Her book is in the school: Tar boi ta school e ache   তার বইটা স্কুলে আছে।
