Anong saya at ginhawa
kung may nagmamahal
dahil may makikiramay
sa lahat ng pagdurusa.
Ang masama kong kapalaran
walang kapantay----
wala akong alinlangan----
sa dinaranas sa kasalukuyan.
Kahit ako ay magmahal
sa isang musa
wala namang hinuhana
ako'y pahahalagahan.
Isumpa ko kaya ang panahon
nang ako'y ipinanganak
higit na mas masarap
na mamatay bilang sanggol.
Nais ko mang magpaliwanag
dila ko'y ayaw gumalaw
nakikita kong malinaw
pagtanggi lamang ang
matatangap.
Ligaya ko sana'y walang

sa kaalamang ikaw ay minamahal
isusumpa ko at patutunayan
para sa iyo lamang ako
mamamatay

"Father of Ilokano literature"
author of one of the Philippine' great epics
entitled Biag ni Lam-ang
(Life of Lam-ang)
With his extensive knowledge of the
Spanish and Ilocano language, he co-
authored the Ilocano-Spanish grammar
book and dictionary.
His famous poem entitled "Patay"
shows his clear and vigorous
philosophy on death.
(March 1592 – c. 1630
Epic Story
BIAG NI LAM-ANG
1.) This tale follows the unusual life of a boy who could talk and right after he was
born. At nine months old, he embarked on a journey to avenge his father’s death,
accompanied by his pets, a rooster and a dog.
2.) In one of his adventures he then goes on a quest to win the heart of the famed
beauty, Ines Kannoyan. When he arrives, Ines’ house is filled with suitors. But
with the help of his pet rooster who knocks the whole house down and builds it up
again with a flap of his wings, he eventually wins her heart
3.) After the marriage, Lam-ang is told that he must dive down to the very depths
of the sea and retrieve a pearl from a magical oyster, otherwise the marriage
would have bad luck but Lam-ang dives into the sea and on his way down, is
eaten by a fearsome fish called the Berkakan
4.) The next day, Lam-ang’s rooster, who had magical powers spoke to Ines, and
told her to have Lam-ang’s bones fished out of the sea. Ines did as she was
instructed, bringing Lam-ang’s retrieved and Lam-ang born again.
Carlos Bulosan
My Father goes to court
prolific writer and poet
(1911-1956) best remembered as the author of America Is
in the Heart
gained recognition in mainstream American
society with the 1944 publication of
Laughter of my Father,
He immigrated to America from the
Philippines in 1930
My Father Goes to Court
1.) The story takes place in a city in the Philippines. It is about a boy and his
large family that is happy and healthy, though they often go hungry
2.) This is contrasted to their rich neighbors who have plenty of good food, but
their children are thin and sickly. Because the poor children can smell the rich
family's food over the fence, the rich man brings a charge against the poor family
for stealing the spirit of his family's food.
3.) The case goes to court, and the poor father agrees to pay the rich neighbor
back. He collects coins from his friends in his hat, shakes the coins in the hat,
and says that the rich man hearing the coins jiggling is a fair payback for the
charge of stealing the spirit of food by merely smelling it.
4.) The judge rules in the poor father's favor, and the rich man gets nothing
more than the "spirit" of the money the poor father collected.
Manuel E. Arguilla
(1911- 1944)
was an Ilokano writer in English, patriot, and martyr
He is known for his widely
anthologized short story "How My
Brother Leon Brought Home a
Wife”, and Other Short Stories“.
Won first prize in the Commonwealth
Literary Contest in 1940.
His stories "Midsummer" and "Heat"
was published in the United States by
the Prairie Schooner.
stories depict scenes in Barrio Nagrebcan, Bauang,
La Union where he was born.
he studied at the University of the Philippines where he
finished BS Education in 1933
he became a member and later the president of the
U.P. Writer's Club and editor of the university's Literary
Apprentice.
1.) Leon and Baldo waited for the arrival of Maria at the barrio.
2.) Maria was afraid that she won't be accepted by Leon's father because
she may not able to adapt their way of living in the province.
3.) Baldo was ignoring to his older brother's question about why did they
have to go to Waig instead of Camino Real. (The reason is that their father
wanted to test Maria if she is worthy to be Leon's wife.)
4.) Baldo discussed their travel to his father.
Leon's entire family talked to Maria
5.) The Father's voice became livelier than before when he talked to her
(which means he accepted her wholeheartedly.)
Awiyao and Lumnay were husband and wife for seven years, but now the
husband has to marry another woman, Madulimay, because Lumnay was
not able to give him a child.
On the night of the wedding,Awiyao goes to his and Lumnay’s house to
personally invite her to the traditional wedding dance.
However,Lumnay, the best dancer in the entire tribe, refuses to go. Then,
during their conversation, it is revealed that both of them still love each
other, but because of their tribe’s custom, they have to separate.
Awiyao goes back to the wedding,to the wedding dance, after being
fetched by some friends. Lumnay wants to follow, partly because of
the dance, and partly because she wants to put a stop to their tribe’s
tradition of having to marry another partner just to have a child.
