Probably because I grew up in the church and lived in the church for the first 18 years of my life,
though I witnessed so many people involved in the church ministries, I did not realize what they did
were part of the church ministry. I got used to see people (young and old) who came to the church
every Saturday morning before 7 a.m. to clean the floor and wipe the pews. I knew that every fourth
Sunday morning, my mom would get up at 4:30 a.m. to prepare the wine and unleavened bread for
the Holy Communion. When our church was under construction, in order to save money (actually
because we did not money), all the people in the church ran to the church whenever they were
available to break down the bricks and put them away carefully in order to reuse them. People who
were in their 70s, 80s to those who were in the elementary school all came to the church to clean the
construction waste. Though many of the church members were back to the heaven, I still remember
most of the people's faces and all the things we did together even after 20 years. No one publicized
what s/he did or reminded each other that we were serving the church. We did all these as what we
did for our own family because the church was part of our lives. Therefore, when I think about
participating in the ministry, I think it is the natural response of the Christians to volunteer for

Some members have observed that they do not like or understand the use of King James Bible.
Other options such as NASB, New King James, NIV (1984 edition) would be more useful with this
congregation. As noted to you, this is a very Bible intelligent church and like in–depth sermon
material. While we follow Biblical doctrine and direction, SACC is not a conservative church to the
point where we use King James.
Concerns have been expressed that many sermons have tended to be "evangelistic" in nature.

problems going on in the church. The Sr. pastor tends to be the face of the church, just as the
president is the face for the United States. To be a second chair leader to the pastor you are either an
associate minister, or a small specific type of minister, for example youth, children's, young adults,
and so on and so forth. So if you are an associate minister, at least in the United Methodist Church,
you may want your Sr. pastors job but you do not really have any say who will get it or not, so most
of the time you just do not fight with them. If you are a small specific type of minister you more
than likely do not want the Sr. pastor's job because that is not where your calling is or you would not
be doing this job. While that is the basis of the structure it is also important to remember that while
the Sr. pastor is over those in the second chair more likely than not the Sr. pastor wants your input
on things and wants you to succeed. If your Sr. pastor does not want you to succeed then you need to
find a different job. With that in mind the first chair is not some one that you should fight with over

One of the curriculums you could develop would be what is called Christ and culture. You could
help the youth understand what scripture says about specific elements in culture. One way that it is
done is through basing the scripture as the lesson and bring in different elements of culture. Another

The size of the congregation and the number in our team is beneficial because there are not too
many congregants yet at the same time there is enough staff that we can break up and tackle all of
the congregation at once or break up and assignment a few members of our team to interview all of
the congregants either through home visits or meals with the congregants. The congregants

is a ministry that is potentially misunderstood more often than it is understood in the life of a
congregation. As the congregation struggles to combine secular life with spiritual practice, the
vision for the teaching and learning ministry of the church can fall out of focus for those who feel
called to this ministry's vocations. To begin, I will define the teaching and learning ministry of the

The church's ministry of teaching and learning is the collective discernment of the community, as
loving people of God, which integrates and challenges the understanding of their presence as

This definition may appear simple if taken at its face value. However, upon further inspection its

As leaders, we bear the responsibility for building in our women an appetite for the meat of the
Word. This happens incrementally not instantly but it must happen if we are to grow and thrive as
individuals and as a ministry.
While fellowship and fun are good things, sometimes this takes precedence over opportunities to
grow. The weekly study and the book studies have been steps in the right direction, but our
organized events–– such as the recent prayer breakfasts–– have not always presented helpful

Called by God!
Am I called by God? That is a very good question. I have had a tough time with this question, with
this statement. How could God call a person to ministry that can't get this walk right? I have
struggled so much that I often felt as though I was a wolf in sheep's clothing. That maybe I was a
present day Judus. That maybe I was here to prove that all this was fake. That there was no way to
live a life pleasing to our God. That we can't really give up our fleshly desires to serve God and God
alone. Boy oh boy, did the enemy have a hold of my mind or what! It was not until I had a personal
encounter with God that I realized we all struggle. We all have faults, suffer with our own demons.
Some put on a mask others like myself don't, we are just open with our struggles. I realized God
never promised me that this walk would be easy. He never told me I would not hurt, I wouldn't fall, I
wouldn't struggle. What He did guarantee is everlasting life if I choose to serve Him and accept Him
as my Lord and Savior. I no longer had to prove to anyone that I was saved, that I was called by
Him. All I had to do was live a purposeful life and do what He called me to do. I know I am called
by God, it was in me all along from the beginning. He knew what He needed me to do so He
allowed me to go through things to help others. I lost my parents and the majority of my extended

God wants more Christians to stay in the business world, the arts, entertainment, politics,
journalism, etc. and bring their Christian convictions and world–view to bear on how they conduct
their business, write songs or films, or paint pictures. One of the reasons for the recent decline of
Christian impact on our culture is because too many Christians have left the fields of science, math,
film, art, journalism, and especially politics, and hence there was a vacuum left that the humanist,
skeptic, atheist, and agnostic filled. So, now when in recent years Christians have tried to boldly
make an impact on culture in these various fields, especially politics, we are finding the whole
world–view of our culture has changed and the world–view of absolutes, right and wrong, the Ten
Commandments, prayer, belief in God, convictions about abortion and homosexuality as sin are
scoffed at, laughed at, labeled as intolerant, and even pushed out by media blitz or ignoring the facts
or not giving Christians opportunity to voice their opinion. When considering a "call" to ministry, let
me encourage you to not dichotomize too sharply between the secular and sacred. God wants to use
all kinds of vocations to both "disciple the nations" ( Matt. 28:19 ) and be salt and light in the

Relationships hold the keys to success
Church leadership, along with teams that are sent to the mission field should work together in
identifying what needs to be done for the particular community of people. A relevant example of
critical caring was in a local church body. The Worship Experience team, made up of a 200+
member choir, had clearly identified a group within this church community that would care for one
another in satisfying common goals, and to accomplish the task of helping people get through tough
times. While there was a general fund of money to help with occasional supermarket gift cards, this
critical care group was charged with building relationships to find out real needs. When an actual
couple was having hospital–related illnesses among each family member, they didn't necessarily
need money–rather someone to help clean their house and do much–needed loads of laundry.
Implementing solutions are where most people get stuck. Whether leading by example in a local
church choir, or shepherding a mission's team into Juarez, Mexico takes courage and the willingness
to take a risk. All people are capable of changing the world, but before taking that step we need to
start with ourselves and change our own world–pushing past our fears and living toward goals in our

In Luke's presentation of our Lord's ministry, if any words stand as a "mission statement" to make
sense of what follows, it's the sermon in Nazareth. In it, Jesus reads from Isaiah 61, saying, "The

Even in the narrative before the start of Jesus's earthly ministry, Luke shows us how God
orchestrated events in such a way as to exalt the lowly. We see this as early as chapter one, from his
focus on Mary. She was a young woman from a no–place town, engaged to a poor man. She had no
status to boast in, no great wealth or name. But when the angel appeared to her, the first words he
said were, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" For it was with one such as her that
God found favor, favor enough even to choose her as the mother of the Messiah. Mary herself

The ministry of Jesus changed society, religion, and the world forever. During his short ministry,
Jesus had a clear task, teach and preach the Kingdom of God on earth. Within this kingdom, a higher
standard of living was preached; sickness was outlawed, needs were supplied, demoniacs were set
free, and religion was superseded by love. To accomplish this mission, Jesus selected a few good
men and turned them into disciples. They would be the ones, after his ascension, that would carry
the torch and preach the good news to the ends of the earth. Centuries later, we have the written
messages, teachings, preachings, and instructions of Jesus thanks to some of these men. Amongst
them, John, a disciple of Jesus who is assumed to be the author of one of the four Gospels. Many

Just over 1 year ago I voluntarily took over the organizational aspects of the Communion Service
Team. I did not believe that my calling was to become the full Ministry Team Leader. However, I
have apparently, by default, evolved into that position. At differing times, I have included many you

With the Elders continually being overtaxed with duties, this slowly transitioned to recruited lay–
men.
Criteria in hand, I developed a multiple–month strategy aimed at attracting new members. Past
precedent and best practices with volunteers indicated that that simply putting out bulletin messages
was not an effective recruitment tool. Thus, our team's first step was the initiation of several face–
to–face challenges to people we knew to consider the ministry. I believe this attempt failed due in
part to most of the people that we knew were either already engaged in other ministries, or did not
wish to join one.
The next phases included requesting the Small Group Ministry to alert their Group Leaders of the
opportunity to serve the Church; both individually and/or as a small group. This was closely
followed by a similar request to both the Men's, Women's, and High School /Middle School Youth
ministries. I requested that if they were willing to get the word out to us to please make it an in–
person and personal appeal at their meetings (again, because general "we need help" emails tend to
be ineffective). I also made myself available to attend any event or presentation.
Small group ministries created a very nice write up. However, it eventually went out as an emailed
notice. This yielded no recruits. When I unofficially polled a few group leaders at a later training
event, no one recalled that

The Greatest Moments Of Weakness
The overwhelming evidence of God's truth in my life seems to have come at the greatest moments
of weakness. Like a gambler, who in pursuit of extreme opportunity for financial wealth, he sets
himself up for a big score and must lay his cards on the table; or when, after a young man finds true
romantic love in the eyes of the woman of his dreams, he risks the potential loss of the relationship
in order to ask her hand in marriage, so must we be willing to risk everything in order to meet
Christ. There is a necessity in life that we all must take risks, otherwise risking the possibility of
never enjoying the most beautiful moments life has to offer. Risk is not a commodity of which I
underestimate. If taken too lightly, risk portends to failure, and to be risk–averse will ultimately lead
to death of dreams by omission. My life experience is the sum of a series of genuine, intentional
decisions with regards to what is important to my wife and me, and most often keeping the end goal
in mind. I love to joke and laugh, however my default mental demeanor is analytical and
intellectual. Constantly thinking through circumstances and decisions, I often find myself waiting
for wisdom, like a baker waits patiently for his dough to rise. Although, if there is a recipe for
discernment, I've yet to find it. For myself, it was not a risk to follow Christ at age 22. It was a "no–

and Beverly Sempe with The Bread Ministry for 10 years, Kenneth Copeland Ministries about 6
years. I served as a prayer partner for 2 years with Trinity Broadcasting. Additionally, I have served
in various ministries for seminars, conferences, and evangelism. I have worked with the following

Ministry Conflict and Resolution Paper
The conflict came about during the time our church was searching for a pastor, and a deacon in
training was upset about a visiting minister's preaching. He strongly opposed the church inviting this
preacher back. However, the deacons, myself, and other church members like the young minister
and thought it okay to invite the young minister to come and preach on several occasions.
After listening to the deacon in training, it was explained to him that it was not appropriate for him
to get up during the young minister's sermon and storm out of the sanctuary. His response was that
he was going to continue to do it as long as the young minister was invited to come and preach.

It was explained to him that his behavior was not acceptable and he in turn got angry and decided he
did not want to be considered for the deacon ministry. He left the office with the attitude that he was
not going to change his disposition and so his request to step down was accepted.
The Bible tells us to exercise love with one who is causing conflict and to try and reason with him as
it is written in Matthew 18:15–17. So as to make sure that there was no confusion about where the
church leaders stood and where he stood on the matter, this doctrine was followed.
After several failed attempts to help the deacon in training, the matter was resolved by him choosing
to step down and we understood that was probably the best thing to do. A few Sundays had past and
with much prayer about the situation, he finally calmed down and sat with his wife with the rest of
the congregation.
We have since been blessed with a new pastor and he seems to be receptive to him and especially
since the church has no longer the need to invite the young minister back to preach. This was a
situation that the deacon in training got more upset at the church for not siding with him and so it
seems that he had a temper tantrum because he could not get his

In a season rich with new experiences, it is an interesting time to assess my spiritual growth. This
has been an unsettling time of redefining and restructuring my life and a season of isolation from the

Authentic Self
This semester I am enrolled in a class dealing with victims of trauma. This has been a powerful class
for me, since that is the area where I feel lead to minister to others. At the same time, it has been
unsettling in some other areas because it has brought me to a place of revisiting old experiences and
their "clinically defined" consequences. This has strengthened and brought me new–found
confidence in who I am. I don't identify myself by my past, but by looking back from this place in
my life, I can see how God has shaped me through everything in my life. The entire process brought
me closer to God and gave me a deep faith that He is with us and that He will heal and restore. I am

class reminded me of what it might have been without Him. The faith I have in Him is not for me

The premise of Cannister's book is that when teenagers matter, everything changes in student
ministry. Cannister uses the introduction to look at four basic core principles that have lasted almost
a century. First there is having a clarity of purpose which, without, a youth ministry will crumble.
Second is exemplifying authentic leadership. This is not someone being perfect but genuine with
youth. Third is the overall goal: transformation of lives. Lastly there is creating and maintaining
genuine relationships with students. These four core principles have been "beacons of light" for
youth pastors/ministries for decades. In chapter one, Cannister claims that when teenagers matter,
student ministries will thrive. Cannister begins by showing what most churches are doing by
outlining the "good enough" principle, a mentality and form of organization that states that 80% of
youth/parents will be satisfied with only 20% of the effort, much like a consumer. Cannister,
however, advocates for a comprehensive youth ministry or a ministry that does not just focus on
safety, what the parents want, or only the Christian community but one that will go out and reach the

When you first begin a class you never know what to expect. When I first began Intro to Ministry, I
did not know the level of insight that I would have about myself and about the character of God. I
have been able to combine the things that have happened in my past and things that are happening
now to try to paint God's picture in my life to come. Although you do not need to pinpoint the exact
moment in time when you received your call for it to be legible, I am thankful that I do. I think it

I just emailed out my last meeting reminders for the semester at Biola. Thankfully, they do not
represent the final meetings with the majority of people with whom I meet. Of the 52 individuals I
have met with, 42 of them will continue after the first of the year. This continuity allows for greater
understanding of their stories and greater capacity to help them discern God's voice in their lives.
Those who are transitioning out create space for new people, and new opportunities to discover the
movements of God in the direction room.

Along with these individuals, I have led three groups, with a total of 21 people. This provides a
totally different dynamic, which allows the members to discover how the Spirit of God can speak

A Call to Ministry
My call to ministry started at an early age. I attended Bible classes with family and friends to gain
knowledge of who God is and what He has done. It was then, that I grew to have a strong appetite
for God and His word. I enjoyed studying not only the Bible but other reading materials and books

altered to specific age groups. Being a youth minister you encounter many different things. Like

Journal Two Week's Work: This week I developed a philosophy of ministry. This was a daunting
task, as I would soon find out. As I prepared for this week, I was unaware just how time consuming
creating a philosophy of ministry entails. I began the week by devoting Sunday and Monday with
reading from the bibliography. I ready 50 pages from The First 100 Days, 51 pages from Boundaries
For Leaders, and 95 pages from Cracking Your Churches Culture Code, with a total of five hours.
On Tuesday I devoted my time to researching the essential elements of a ministry philosophy. I read
articles online concerning the principles and reasons for creating a ministry philosophy.
Furthermore, I asked a colleague, Harvey Mitchell, who has a M.Div. and is working on a Doctor of

When one thinks of the words "Church Camp," the term is not always related to "fun." That is,
unless that person has been to Gull Lake Ministries. I will admit, before my first summer there I
originally believed that the camp was going to be a boring place where biblical information was the
focus all the time. I quickly learned that I was extremely wrong. Not only was my impression of the
camp wrong, my outlook on what life at camp would be like was completely wrong as well. By
providing me with experiences I would otherwise not have had the opportunity to enjoy, introducing
my family and me to new people, and enhancing my relationship with God, the next two hours at

We walked into the Ministry Center and went into the gym. They had a rock–climbing course and an
assortment of small games around the gym. Some people were playing basketball, others were
playing octoball, and the list for bowling was completely filled. We decided to signup for bowling.
By the time Family Huddle was over, it was time for the daily worship service, En Gedi. A few of
my family members and I went together and the music was amazing. There were upwards of 100
people singing and worshiping together. As it got towards the end of the service people began to file
out of the building. The service ended with the remaining people having a group prayer and
everyone returning to their cottages to sleep and prepare for the next day.
The rest of the week went extremely quickly; I've never learned more about my spiritual relationship
with God. Not a single day at Gull Lake Ministries was the same. There was always a new
adventure to discover. Whether it was making friends, playing games, or jumping off a one–
hundred–foot tower, camp was always entertaining and fun. I found that the "camp high" that my
friends had told me about was real, and it changed me for the better. My first year at camp had been
made a success through the combined efforts of the counselors, the staff, and my newfound friends.
I have returned to Gull Lake six times since my first year, and

The topics on spiritual formation and assimilation in our churches were extremely beneficial. I have
come to learn and understand why self–care is critical for any leader. I never realized how
dangerous it is if a person is always saying yes to different meetings and commitments in ministry. I
also discovered the benefits of saying 'no' sometimes to these same commitments. If a person keeps
going without taking a pause for reflection or self–care it is possible, it can have an effect on the
individual's health and longevity in ministry. As I learn the importance of self–care to prevent
burnout or stress I am encouraged to teach others the same importance. Lack of self–care can have a
grave effect on the church, family, and community. Many pastors over the years have decided to
walk away from the call because they were burned out. It is important that I make self–care a crucial
part of my daily routine now, so when more responsibilities or expectations come my way I would
be prepared to handle it better. When it comes to self–care of our congregation there are times when
we miss the boat on taking care of them. The assimilation class on guarding the church's back door
has helped to put things into perspective for me. We were taught how important it is to follow up

Factors That Go Into Making A Healthy And Thriving...
There are many key factors that go into making a healthy and thriving ministry. One can picture
ministry as a car engine were all the parts and gears are moving together to reach its destination. If
one of the parts or gears fails, the car is going to have a hard time getting to where it needs to be.
One of the most important key factors to making a healthy ministry would to insure proper
communication between all staff members in your ministry. If any communication links are broken,
it can have a devastating impact on the relationships between staff members, making it hard to work
and grow as a team.
Ethical Dilemma While the senior pastor was on vacation for a week, it was up to the ministry team
to run the Sunday morning service. This would be the first time the senior pastor has been gone for
this long and having the ministry run solo on all areas in ministry for this week. All was going
perfectly that is until the actual service on Sunday. A member of our ministry leader team had said
somethings to members of the church at really upset some of them. We decided for the best interest
of the service, that we finished the service and dealt with the situation once the senior pastor
returned from his vacation. As one of the witnesses to the instant I decided to write a email to the
senior pastor that I would like to sit down and talk to him about what took place when he was gone.

General Requirements
In order to participate in any of the Helps Ministries at WOGF church and/or Summerfield
Ministries, the following requirements MUST be met:
1. Be a full–fledged tithing member in good standing, according to Malachi 3:8 for at least three
months, having become born–again, baptized in water, and believe in being spirit–filled with the
evidence of speaking in other tongues.
2. Be livining a lifestyle that is consistent with Christian principles, the Pastor's vision, and the rules
and regulations governing the Helps Minisries (i.e., one cannot participate in any of the Helps
Ministires if one has not gained victory in manifestation for at least three months over smoking
tobacco, drinking, narcotics, and/or illegitlmate sexual habits.)
3. Have the temperment and capacity of performing the duties established for the particular Helps
Ministry to which application is made.
4. Consistently attend weekly Bible Study and Sunday worship services. Persons working nights
must inform their Department Head of his/her absence.
5. Attend scheduled meetings established for the Helps Ministry to which application is made.
6. Be willing to support the Ministry, both prayerfully and financially on a consistent basis.

God's timing is perfect and there is a reason why I felt a sense of urgency in beginning the MOL
program this summer. The ministry at the church I serve is experiencing some growing pains and as
a church we are assessing the mission and vision to determine whether it is still God's mission and
vision for our congregation. Regardless of whether our vision remains the same or we develop a
new mission and vision, our church needs to realign our ministries around that mission and vision

The old saying, actions speak louder than words, is certainly true if leaders want to be effective in
transforming the lives of others. If my words and actions don't align, I have no credibility and no

A Description and Scope of the Issue of Ministry Burnout
The Scope of the Issue of Burnout Ministry burnout is a problem for the minister who is burned out,
the family of the minister, and the churches they serve. Adding to the problem is, "There are still
many in the churches who refuse to recognize that there is a problem with what is today called
'clergy burnout'" (Randall, 2013, p. 334). When a church will not acknowledge there is a potential
problem, the minister will be left to deal with the shame and pain of suffering burnout. "Burnout is a
psychological condition that results from chronic stress related to working with people" (Milner,
2007, p. 9). The statistics are alarming. Christian Ministers are leaving the ministry in droves.
According to statistics gathered by J.R. Briggs, 1,500 pastors leave the ministry for good each
month because of burnout or conflict in the church they serve (cited in Briggs, 2014). According to
the data gathered by Brigg (2014), that means that over 18,000 pastors leave the ministry each year
because of burnout and conflict. Briggs (2014) also found that 80 percent of pastors and 84 percent
of pastors' spouses are discouraged in their roles. Statistics further reveal that "for every 20 pastors
