2. DEVELOPMENTAL GOALS
• Achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40% of the
population at a rate higher than the national average.
• Empower and promote the social, economic and political
inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity,
origin, religion or economic or other status.
• Ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome,
eliminating discriminatory laws and practices, and promoting
appropriate legislation, policies, and action.
• Adopt policies, especially fiscal, wage and social protection
policies, and progressively achieve greater equality.

3. WHY DOES IT RESONATE FOR ME?
Being a woman, I have experienced firsthand
discrimination based on my gender. I am not
alone in my experience, and many others have
certainly faced more heinous inequalities than I
have. According to the UN, almost 2 in 10
people reported having personally experienced
discrimination on at least one of the grounds
established by international human rights law.
COVID-19 has deepened existing inequalities,
hitting the poorest and most vulnerable
communities the hardest. It has put a spotlight
on economic inequalities and fragile social
safety nets that leave vulnerable communities
to bear the brunt of the crisis. At the same
time, social, political and economic inequalities
have amplified the impacts of the pandemic.

4. LOCAL CHANGE
Individuals can help on a local level by getting involved with their communities. This can include
working with underserved populations to promote coalition building, being informed and
becoming involved with local politics, and standing up to the various forms of discrimination.
Greater efforts are needed to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, and invest more in health,
education, social protection, and decent jobs especially for young people, migrants and refugees
and other vulnerable communities.
Political, economic, and social policies need to be universal and pay particular attention to the
needs of disadvantaged and marginalized communities to promote inclusive social and economic
growth for all.

Anybody can personally contribute to the cause of reducing inequality in various ways, including:
