Activity 1: Represent Me!
1. The temperature in Region 12 rises up to 36OC.
2. You have Php10.00 savings from your allowance.
3. Due to COVID 19, the price of a liter of gasoline decreases
by P3.00.
4. There five points demerit from passing a requirement late.
5. He got a test score of 4 points above the passing mark.

Questions:
1. Based on the number line, which integer comes first?
2. Where is zero found on the number line?
3. Which integers are seen on the left side of zero?
4. Which integers are seen on the right side of zero?
How can the
Rectangular

Rectangular Coordinate
System and Its Uses
(M8AL-Ie-1)
Objectives
1. Describe and illustrate the rectangular coordinate
system and its uses.
2. Plot ordered pairs on the Cartesian plane.
Activity 2: Seat Plan
•Describe your location with respect to the column
and row you are seated.
Kendra – Column 7, Row 2

Layderos – Column 8, Row 3
Rectangular Coordinate System
• Also known as “Cartesian Plane”
• It is composed of two intersecting number lines
that are perpendicular to each other at the
point zero.
• It was discovered by a French Mathematician
and Philosopher named Rene Discartes.
Parts of Rectangular Coordinate System
• Axes – refer to the two intersecting number lines that
are perpendicular to each other in the Cartesian
Plane. These are the x – axis and y – axis.
• Origin – refers to the point of intersection of x and y
axes at (0, 0).
x – axis it is the horizontal line
y – axis it is the vertical line.
• Quadrants – refers to the regions that divide the plane
into four equal parts.
Questions:
1. What is the Cartesian Plane composed of?
2. Where do you see the origin?
3. What are the signs of coordinates of the points in
each quadrant? Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4?
Parts of Rectangular Coordinate System
• Points, Ordered pair and Coordinates
Points in the cartesian plane are labelled with ordered
pair (x, y).
• Abscissa (x – coordinate) – refers to the distance from
the point of origin that is measured along the x – axis.
• Ordinate (y – coordinate) – refers to the distance from
the point of origin that is measured along the y – axis.
Example
• Points A, B, C are points with coordinates.
• 5, -2, and 6 are the abscissa and 9, 1, and -3 are the
ordinates.
A(5, 9) B(-2, 1) C(6, -3)
• Thus, in point (x, y), x is the abscissa and y is the
ordinate
Activity 3: Plot and Identify
Draw a cartesian plane and plot the following points
and state which quadrant they lie in:
1) A(1, 5) Quadrant: _
2) C(-1, 3) Quadrant: _
3) D(-5, -9)Quadrant: _
4) E(2, -4) Quadrant: _
5) G(-8, 6) Quadrant: _
6) H(6, 10) Quadrant: _
A(1, 5)
C(-1, 3)
D(-5, 9)
E(2, -4)
G(-8, 6) H(6, 10)
Activity 4: Human Rectangular Coordinate System
Form two lines. 17 of you will form a horizontal line
(x–axis) and 16 for the vertical line (y-axis). These
line should intersect at the middle. Others will serve
as the points. You may sit down and will only stand
when the coordinates of the point is being called.
You have 10 seconds to plot the point and tell the
quadrant.
A(1, -3)
D(-5, 6)
E(-1, 4)
F(-2, 1)
G(-3, -6)
H(-4, -8)
Activity 5: Locate the Coordinates!
Determine the coordinates and quadrant or axis where
the indicated places belong. The first one is done for your
example.

The two major tribal groups in Lake Sebu are the Tboli
and Ubo tribes. According to International Labour
Organization in their website about The Indigenous
Peoples Development Programme (IPDP): Lake Sebu,
Philippines. The indigenous peoples of the T’boli and Ubo
tribes make up 55% of Lake Sebu’s population. The T’boli
tribe of South Cotabato is a fascinating group of people
because of their distinct culture, craftsmanship and
weaving skills.
