“COORDINATE RACE”
“COORDINATE RACE”
Each group lines up in a straight line.
The teacher will call out a coordinate pair. The first
player from each group runs to the board, and plot
the coordinate pair.
The groups with the most points will receive rewards.
If the answer is not correct, the other group will have
an opportunity to steal the chance of giving the
correct answer.
CARTESIAN
COORDINATE SYSTEM
Group 7
At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to:
a)Describe the Cartesian Coordinate System: x-axis; y-
axis; quadrant and origin,
b)Plot the given pair of coordinates in the Cartesian
coordinate plane,
c)Names the coordinates of a point and identifies its
location in the Cartesian Coordinate System; and
d)Appreciate the importance of the Cartesian
Coordinate System in solving real-world problems.
Objectives:
CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM
²
• The point in
the two-
dimensional
space.
• The point in
one
dimensional
space.
• Rectangular Cartesian Coordinate
System – one-to-one correspondence
between the points in a geometric
plane and the set of ordered pair (x, y)
of real numbers.
CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM
Take note: the ordered pair (1, 2) is not the
same as the ordered pair (2, 1).
• The first number
x is called
abscissa or x –
coordinate.
CARTESIAN COORDINATE SYSTEM
Ordered Pair (x, y):
• The second
number y is
called the
ordinate or y –
coordinate.
Parts of a Cartesian Plane
1. Horizontal line – is the x axis
2. Vertical line_ is the y axis
3. Coordinate axes - are the x and y axes.
4. Origin – is the point of intersection of the x
and y axes.
5. Quadrants – four divisions of a Cartesian
plane.
EXAMPLES:
.
A (7, 3)
B (-6, 4)
C (-2, -3)
D (8, -1)
E (0, 5)
F (-9, 0)
APPLICATION IN REAL LIFE
Navigation
Directions: Read each statement carefully and fill in the
blank with the correct word or term based on what you
have learned.
1.The intersection of the coordinate axes is called the
_____.
2.The vertical axis of the Cartesian plane is also called the
_____.
3.The pair of numbers (2, -7) is called a/ an _____ pair.
4.In the ordered pair (3, 5), 3 is called the ______.
5.The four regions formed by the coordinate axes are
called ______.
ASSIGNMENT
.
Directions: Plot the following points on
graph paper and identify the quadrant
where each point is located:
Shane (3, 2)
Lewis (-4, -3)
Penny (0, 5)
Luna (-2, 4)
Hailey (6, -1)
Jodi (-1, 0)
Robin (2, -6)
Sam (4, 3)
