Cut Nyak Dhien was a leader of the Acehnese resistance forces against the Dutch during the Aceh War in the 19th century. She was born in 1848 and took over leadership of the guerrilla forces after her husband Teuku Umar was killed fighting the Dutch in 1895. Cut Nyak Dhien continued resisting the Dutch for several more years until old age and declining health and resources forced the surrender of her small army in 1901. She was exiled by the Dutch and died in 1908.
