Black codes were discriminatory laws enacted in many Southern states against African Americans after the Civil War. Sharecropping was a system where former slave masters leased land to former slaves in return for a portion of their crops, which critics called a "New System of Slavery." Redemption referred to Southern Democrats regaining power in Southern state governments in the 1870s.
