The humanities are under severe pressure worldwide. While the humanities have been viewed for centuries as the pinnacle of education, during the last forty years or so the study of art, history, literature, language and music is typically seen as a luxury, both by policy makers and the public. The humanities are an ornamentation of life but useless for technology, economy and industry. Humanities scholars have been unable to come up with a convincing answer to their marginalization. Arguments in favour of the humanities are defensive and get lost in mantra-like repetitions like: the humanistic disciplines are important for self-cultivation (Bildung), they are relevant for cultural and historical consciousness, and they form the basis for critical thinking and democracy. While these arguments may all be true, most scholars overlook the possibility that the assumption behind the image problem itself may be wrong.
Humanities scholars seem to have taken for granted that the humanities are economically irrelevant. Yet a quick glance over the history of the humanities shows the opposite: humanistic insights not only radically changed the world but they also resulted in concrete applications. As if humanities scholars have no idea of their own history – or decided to neglect a part of it -- these applications are attributed to the sciences. Here something has to be rectified, where the attack is the best defense.

Yet a quick glance over the history of the humanities shows the opposite: humanistic insights not only radically changed the world but they also resulted in concrete applications. As if humanities scholars have no idea of their own history – or decided to neglect a part of it -- these applications are attributed to the sciences. Here something has to be rectified, where the attack is the best defense.

This paper articulates new perspectives and integrates existing frameworks on cultural change from the point of view of Twenty-first century anthropology. This paper also identifies the key drivers of cultural change across epochs and investigates the mechanics of cultural change, and our proposed approaches towards cultural change (characterized by Activism which we believe is an adjunct for the globalisation of the field) are intertwined with our core philosophy of Neo-centrism which is intended to be used in a wide variety of domains. The approaches that we adumbrate, bear some resemblance to ‘The Theory of Linguistic Osmosis’ as propounded in an earlier paper, may be referred to as ‘Cultural Osmosis’, and as such are opposed to more simplistic theories of Cultural Change. We refer to this approach as the “Proactive-interactive-symbiotic approach to long-term cultural change”. This eventually leads to what cultural anthropologists refer to Cultural integration in some form with different cultures retaining their own characteristics. The ethics and the pros and cons of activism are also explored, along with their role in ensuring the long-term survivability of civilization, their ability to foster cultural symbiosis, and extirpate other outmoded approaches. This paper also introduces concepts such as Manumittology and Manumittonomics as a part of the Neo-centrist framework, and the ‘Theory of Mindspace’ as well. These approaches are expected to integrate with Applied Anthropology and Developmental Anthropology take them to greater heights.

Ethnography is a qualitative research method that seeks to understand cultural phenomena that reflect the knowledge and meanings that guide the life of cultural groups within their own environment. While the origins of ethnography lie in the socio-cultural anthropology of the nineteenth century, it is now widely used in sociology, communications studies, educational and medical research, and history – subjects where the intention is to study people, ethnic groups and cultures. However, ethnography remains a contested and, in the view of Jordan and Yeomans (1995), an often loosely used term. Hammersley and Atkinson (2007: 1) see ethnography as
… a particular method or sets of methods. In its most characteristic form it involves the ethnographer participating, overtly or covertly, in people’s lives for an extended period of time, watching what happens, listening to what is said, asking questions.
For Willis and Trondman (2000: 5) it is
... a family of methods involving sustained social contact with agents, and richly writing up the encounter, respecting, recording, representing at least partly in its own terms, the irreducibility of human experience.
Ethnographers, then, as participant observers, look at and record people’s way of life and take an emic (folk or inside) and etic (analytic or outside) approach to describing communities and cultures. The research is carried out in natural settings and is sympathetic to those settings. Traditionally those involved in ethnographic research spend long periods of time in the place of study, and are able to produce thick written cultural descriptions that communicate the information found in the field, or, in the words of Fetterman (2010: 1), ‘a credible, rigorous and authentic story’. While in the past, ethnographers may have travelled to distant places to study ‘exotic’ tribes or groups, contemporary ethnography can concern itself with more mundane locations such as shopping malls, libraries, parks, workplaces, households, communities, cities and even information systems and cyberspace.
Ethnographic accounts seek to be both descriptive and interpretive. Description is important because a high level of detail is essential. Interpretation is equally important because the ethnographer must determine the significance of what s/he observes. Ethnographic research typically employs three kinds of data collection methods, namely observation, interviews and documents, often employing all three methods in a single study. These in turn produce three kinds of data: quotations, descriptions and excerpts of documents. The aim of ethnographic research is to produce narrative descriptions that help to tell ‘the story’ (Hammersley, 1990). Ethnographic methods can help in the development of constructs, themes or variables, but ethnography is also used to test theory. Indeed no study, ethnographic or otherwise, can be conducted without recourse to theory whether scholarly or personal (Fetterman, 2010).

The sociology of gender in
Southern perspective

Abstract
In its founding generations, sociology was greatly concerned with gender, as part of
its theorizing of the world of colonialism and empire. Sociology then focused on the
global metropole, so its analysis of gender in the decades since the Women’s Liberation
movement has been developed in a Northern container. This can now change, if the
extraversion of sociology around the global South can be overcome. The thematics
of gender analyses in the periphery highlight historical processes of the formation and
disruption of gender orders, dealing with issues of violence and land. The work of a
number of gender theorists and researchers from the South is discussed. The material
conditions of knowledge formation in developing countries have to be recognized, as
well as the differing ways intellectuals in the South handle influences from the metropole.
New issues have emerged in the sociology of gender as a neoliberal world order has
taken shape, producing new patterns of masculinized power as well as pathways of
change for women.

Gender research is, today, one of the major fields of sociology, both academic and
applied. The sociology of gender has had significant impact in the education and health
sectors, in violence prevention, antidiscrimination and equal opportunity policy. As an
organized field, however, it is not yet strongly influenced by the postcolonial revolution
in knowledge.

In this article I explore how the sociology of gender can be developed in the light of
Southern theory and Southern research. This is not a small task, not a matter of creating
a postcolonial corner inside the sociology of gender. The issue concerns foundational

- 3. Area Studies is interdisciplinary in approach, multidimensional in focus and deals with a range of issues covering socio-cultural and economic aspects of a nation or a region in a broader framework.
- 4. Area studies has been an integral part of historical discipline for a long time .
- 5. It gained momentum in the modern period with the outbreak of Imperialism accompanied by scramble for markets.
- 6. According to Edward W. Said, “Orientalism” came to Prominence in the late 18th century with a result of Area Studies.
- 7. Soon it paved way for the emergence of Philological Studies, Ethnography, Race Relations Comparative Religion and Heritage Cultural Studies
- 8. In the beginning of the 19th century the area studies slowly began to preoccupy with International Relations since Vienna Congress. The study largely thrived along the lines of diplomatic history.
- 9. It also came under the influence of hair-splitting theories and mind boggling ideas
- 10. Marxism Nazism and Fascism also had their field day in this discipline .
- 11. The World wars, formation of Global Organizations(League of Nations and UNO) and Cold war enlarged the scope of the subject.
- 12. Emergence of New International Order; development of Environment Studies; Identity Questions and Philosophical Divergence have further advanced the cause of the study.
- 13. Formation of Regional Economic Blocks, Global Terrorism and International Trade- Communication and Network Relation have further added impetus to the field of the study.
- 14. Area Study does not confine to any set of Ideational Position , but giving way to different views and discourses.
