Rebetiko music originated in Greece in the 19th century and was influenced by Greek folk music and songs from Asia Minor refugees. It gives voice to the experiences of the working class, addressing themes of love, social injustice, poverty, betrayal, freedom and politics. Rebetiko history is divided into three periods: from 1922-1932 it was dominated by styles from Smyrna; from 1932-1942 it became more authentic and Greek; and from 1942-1952 it gained worldwide acceptance.
