This document outlines lessons and assessments for effective early reading instruction at the PreK-3 level. It discusses the seven pillars of effective reading instruction which include teacher knowledge, classroom assessment, evidence-based research, response to intervention, technology/new literacies, family/community connections, and motivation/engagement. It also outlines the five components of reading instruction: fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, phonics, and phonemic awareness. Finally, it provides examples of lessons and assessments for an emergent literacy learner and a beginner literacy learner focusing on oral language, print concepts, reading comprehension, phonics, and assessing noncognitive characteristics.
