Reaction Paper On The Glass Castle
In this book, The Glass Castle there are many instances in which the Walls family goes through
many different difficulties with their house, household, car, eating situation and much more. There
are also many times where they have been through abuse and bullying which is so terrible, that these
children had to face this, plus everything else they were already facing at home. This was such a
powerful and eye opening book, it taught me that they went through so many problems with their
life and still managed to stay strong and positive. It even showed me that they didn't have the
greatest, most responsible parents in the world but they all still listened followed and cared their
parents. Although, there were many situations when the Walls parents really did care for their
children, so much that they taught them living values and everything to know about living life
fearlessly. Initially, this text is so powerful to the reason that they went through many problems in
their living situations, that people know still have a huge difficulty going through, which is very
heartbreaking. One troubling experience they had to withstand as children it their home was the food
limitations. In the book it said, "I'd stay in one of the stalls with the door locked and my feet
propped up so that no one would recognize my shoes. When other girls came in and threw their
lunch bags in the garbage pails, I'd go retrieve them." This is an example of how they struggled a lot

Speech About My Journey
My journey I am very humbled to be in front of you today. The Philip from 3 years ago would have
never imagined himself on the Principia Ridgeway stage giving a senior speech in front of such an
assembly, not even in his wildest dreams. Unlike everyone else, i didn't have that much time to think
about senior speeches, these were just things that I heard of and saw only in the movies, so you can
imagine how much of a movie celebrity I feel right now. How much I wish my friends back home
could see me now, they wouldn't believe that I finally got to put on a suit that fits me. Even though
at that time i wasn't able to see this day, having to stand in front of you giving you an insight of my
journey to Principia is such an honour and privilege. Ever since an aunt of mine told my mother
about Christian Science and introduced part of my family to, it turned out to be the answer to the life
questions that most of my family members had. It was later on that i came to find out about it at
church that not a day ever passed that i didn't badger about it to my mum until she finally gave in to
actually putting in an application for me. I was in the boy's dorm in school when i got the call from
my mum telling me that she had put in my application to be accepted to attend principa. I told to
repeat this statement then i put the phone speaker that everyone around me could hear it. At first the
room was filled with silence but then someone broke out with a low tone sheepishly saying

3 Grade Lessons
My Three Grade Lessons Preschool– In preschool I did not have friends, wasn't the popular kid, and
I was the one weird kid wearing old lady looking dresses and clothes too big for me. The school I
went to was small and smelt like mold or old ladies most of the time. I was the kid that sat in the
corner doing finger paintings and cutting cool designs into paper to make people chains and
snowflakes. I was poor but I didn't care cause I had what I needed and everything I wished for in a
family. One day me and a friend where outside and she was bragging about her clothes "Shea look at
my clothes they sparkle" she had said to me as I looked at her purple sparkling shirt with a kitten on
it. "Ya it really id sparkly it might make all ur clothes have sparkles." we laughed at the though but I
became jealous of the shirt and started feeling bad for myself Because all my clothes were hand me
downs and all stained up or torn up. I went home that day and told my mom what happened and how
I felt as we did every day and she told me something i will never forget "Its not about the clothes
you wear or the money your family has its about how your family treats you and how you treat
others around you." That year I learned that if your different or if you don't have the money other
families have it doesn't matter as long as you have a family ... Show more content on

friends with many of my old enemies and only one of them didn't become my friend, he was scared

Character Analysis : ' The Curse Words On The Wall '
Chapters 25–26 Left Side Journal At this point, I was struggling to understand the ending and why
Holden wouldn't tell us what happened after him. I was curious of what will happen in the last
chapter and I expected so much, but the ending was honestly really disappointing. Not only for me,
but everyone else who has read this book. It can be inferred, but I wish I had clarification from
Holden himself what had happened. Again, I still focused on finding major themes. One of the
examples of the theme of immaturity is the curse words on the wall. I focused more on that because
it supported the idea that Holden doesn't want to grow up. However, I think there is something more
to it where Holden finally realized that he can't not grow up, but he is still upset that there are these
curse words around Phoebe's school, knowing that little kids wonder what those words mean. Again,
I did not sympathize with Holden because he doesn't seem interested at all about changing his
unhealthy lifestyle. Wherever he is, whether in a psych ward or hospital, it is evident that he still
doesn't apply himself to the real world to try to get better.
Chapters 25–26 Right Side Journal
Questions
Chapter 25
Holden gets frightened when someone shows him some affection. Why is that and how is it
significant?
Why is Holden sure that he has cancer and why is he so nonchalant about it?
Why was he scared that no one would ever see him again? How does this contradict the theme of
isolation?
Why was he angry

Essay about Wrestling Match Loss
Wrestling Match Loss
As I crawled off of the mat in anguish, I couldn't believe that I let it happen again. My one chance to
settle the score and truly prove that I was better, was gone. My coaches and friends tried to tell me
how good I did and how lucky he got, but it only made the pain worse. They put into perspective
exactly how close I was to beating him, and it just made me think more. Think about how this was
his last year, and how I would never be able to avenge my defeat. It made me feel like everything
that I had worked for all season was lost in a split second, one that I couldn't take back.
The 2000–2001 wrestling season started off the same as any other with tormenting practices and the

The thought of regionals and state were starting to come up a little more this late in the year. I knew
that I would have to wrestle Roy again, one way or another.
Regionals came up before I knew it and I won my first and second matches easily with pins, but I
knew my third wouldn't be so easy. Sure enough, I checked the brackets and Roy had won his first
two as well. This only meant one thing, Roy and I had a third date. I spent the next couple of hours
as a nervous wreck awaiting the match. Then I heard the booming voice of the announcer call out
our names and I headed for the mat. The match had little excitement except for a few close calls, and
at the end of the third period it was tied 3–3. Overtime is a good place for a Hotchkiss wrestler to be
because we are in so much better shape than everyone else. Sure I was in better shape than Roy, but
I will have to admit he was a bit stronger, all right a lot stronger. He ended up grabbing my leg with
no technique and jerking it to his body. He got me off my feet and took me down. Roy had beat me
for the first time in three matches. I had out wrestled him until last 5 seconds when I let my guard
down. I was crushed by the defeat and I vowed to myself that if I wrestled him again at state that it
wouldn't happen twice. I won my match for third and fourth against a different rival that had beaten
me earlier

Examples Of Apostrophe In Frederick Douglass
Most of this excerpt from Frederick Douglass's autobiography is written in a narrative style;
however, Douglass chooses to deviate from the narrative in the fourth paragraph, and which maybe
describe as the dramatic monologue. Douglass uses apostrophe, exclamatory sentences, and symbol
in order to illustrate his miserable life as a slave and how he was desperate to gain his freedom.
Douglass uses apostrophe to display how he was feeling upon seeing the boats on Chesapeake Bay.
The story was narrated by him, and then he portrays his monologue to the boat which makes the
fourth paragraph stands out from the rest of the paragraphs. He addresses the boats in way as if the
boats are capable of understanding his life as a slave under savage mental and physical violence of
slaveholders, "The glad ship is gone; she hides in the dim distance. I am left in the hottest hell of
unending slavery." Douglass was made to be a slave for life with no escape. He was made to follow
whatever the slaveholders told him to do whereas the boats were able to travel from places to places.
The use of apostrophe enhances his purpose as it helps the audience to ... Show more content on

merrily before the gentle gale, and I sadly before the bloody whip! You are freedom's swift–winged

boats. He depicts how the boats are able to move freely whereas he is held in lifelong bondage. It is
evident that he also uses parallel sentences with antithesis. He conveys some sense of complexity in
himself and a greater insight to his feelings. The exclamatory sentences intensify Douglass's
statements about his feelings as a slave which reinforces the author's rhetorical

The Seventh Man Short Story
Should "The Seventh Man" forgive himself for his failure to save k.?
In the story "The Seventh Man" a the so called "Seventh Man" is someone who feels responsible for
his friends death, in a tsunami. "The Seventh Man" should not have to feel responsible for his
friends death. It isn't entirely his fault, but the cause of mother nature and natural occurrences. He
feels responsible however because he thinks that their may have been enough time for "The Seventh
Man" to grab his friend, (k) from the ocean wave but he was frozen in shock and could not move.
Based on this "The Seventh Man" feels responsible for the death of his friend and has guilt for life
after these events. Based on this evidence from "The Seventh Man" he probably should not have to
feel bad about the death of his friend but more at peace because of mother natures decision.
Throughout the story the fact is repeated over and that "The Seventh Man" does feel bad about his
friends death but he really should not have to, it really isn't his fault. If his feet did not freeze in
shock he still probably couldn't have saved K. It just wasn't meant to be that way, it was Ks time to
go and for some reason he was taken by that wave in the circle of life. Some think it could have
been different maybe if "The Seventh Man" was not with K but based on knowledge from the story
it probably was his time to go no matter what. The death of K couldn't be caused by "The Seventh
Man" because he could have just as easily been

Lynne Truss Apostrophe
Reading Lynne Truss's book was a truly humbling experience. I consider myself to be a decent to
middling writer, yet truss outlined dozens of mistakes that I make on a day to day basis. Nearly the
first half of the book is devoted to an examination of the comma (a punctuation mark which I clearly
failed to use properly). I've always been a bit unsure as to how (or if) an apostrophe is used
differently between plural and singular possessives. Truss gives a particularly succinct description of
how to use the apostrophe. If the word itself if plural (eg. Women), then the apostrophe comes
before the s. If the word is ambiguous (eg. Boy), then the apostrophe comes after the s (eg. The
boys' hats). I found the number of exceptions to the rules for apostrophe use staggering; certain
names require an apostrophe and an s to be considered plural, and others require only an apostrophe.
Since there is no firm rule for many words, even those ending in –es, it seems that the decision
comes down to the particular house style an author is writing under. ... Show more content on

This was one of the first grammatical mistakes that you pointed out to me this summer. I found
various articles and opinions regarding their usage online; however, Truss sums up the various rules
quite tidily. For the most part, "however" must be used with a preceding semicolon, but two commas
can be used if the sentence structure is not of a compound nature. For example, "the food, however,
is quite bland." I'm sure that I will still slip up occasionally, but it was useful to see the rules laid out

The Crickets Calling Off Of The Distance
The crickets calling off in the distance was a reminder of the ever falling sun and the approaching
night time. Soon people would be wondering where he is or why their friend appeared home all
alone. Home, the place he may never return, the place he used to hate going to after school, gone. It
was a haunting feeling, but not more than the eeriness of this place. Without a soul around, the
lonesome figure walked aimlessly around the abandoned amusement park for what seemed like
forever. He begun to think of how it used to be, or how his parents described it at least. The bright

Descriptive Essay : Fear : The Fear Of Fear
An unpleasant emotion or feeling caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous,
likely to cause pain, or a threat : Fear. Fear is a strong word, it can mean a variety of things and lead
to a variety of things depending on who you are. Some people aren't that fazed by any sort of fear or
just act like they aren't but for me a guy who is about 6'1 foot, so pretty tall and big for my age, well,
i'm the complete opposite. My fear caused me to shake and tremble as if the world was coming to an
end. It makes me feel safe around no one. Being put through my fear makes me look back on my life
and ask myself, was it all worth it for this? It makes me shrink and fall to size of of a humming bird.
My stomach starts to feel like it never has before almost like something terrible is tearing my insides
out one by one. My head is spinning in circles and my hands are trembling to the point where I think
they might fall off. Fear, my fear was heights and I was terrified of them. Of course, I hadn't always
been afraid of heights throughout my whole life. In fact, in my elementary and Pre–K days I loved
heights, well I wouldn't say I loved them but I didn't mind them. I use to climb trees and jump off
diving boards at the pool and things of that matter. Ar times I was maybe 40–50 feet off the ground
sometimes when I was doing certain things like hiking in the mountains when I was on vacation in
Wyoming (which is a great place to visit if you're into that kind of naturalistic stuff) or riding my
bike to the top of peaks and none of it bothered me. But then as my years went on things started to
change. I started realizing the negative and dark side of being up in the clouds. When I got my first
phone ,which was on my 13th birthday if i'm correct, and more technology started to make its
evolution I started witnessing videos of people climbing some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world
in countries and major cities like New York, Hong Kong, Chicago, Dubai and many other places and
others bungee jumping off 200 foot high cliffs. I started inspecting all these daredevils and their love
for heights and I astonished it, but as soon as I found out the aftermath of some of these things my
astonishment soon ceased to

But that seemed like cheating and it wasn't a dance of the dervish. They did graceful spins like
dandelion fluff or ash seeds on the wind. Maybe she had stopped too fast and put her arms down too
fast, jolting her equilibrium into wanting normal. But she hadn't been dizzy until she'd quit spinning
and that meant something. Didn't the dervish slow to a waltzed step before they settled? It was the
lack of control that scared her. When you were that dizzy, you couldn't tell where you were, and
getting down on the ground was wrought with error. She saw all the sharp corners of the suddenly
dangerous room. It could have been worse, she could have cracked her head, banged her face, or put

Byron's Apostrophe
Everyone has a particular animate or inanimate object in their life that they have a strong
appreciation or internal love for. In Apostrophe to the Ocean, by Lord Byron, he shows gratitude to
the mighty and powerful ocean and how it contains the ability to move peacefully or to crush
civilizations with ease. "Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain – the wrecks are all thy deed."
(856, 11–14)You can imagine, from throughout the hundreds of years, the immaculate treasure and
priceless objects that are contained at the floor of the vast body of water. The Ocean is an important
resource for humans and animals. We build vessels to travel across the wide open seas to discover
new territories and animals use it as their home. But why would I ... Show more content on

important because it tells of the dangers that lurk in the waters and how we can only imagine their
unknown powers. "Boundless, endless, and sublime – even from out thy slime the monsters of the

describes them as if they were evil. Being born of slime, it could be imagined that they would not be

The Importance Of Dance In My Life
When I was 9 years old, I never imagined dance would change my life the way it did. While I was
growing up I was secluded. I did everything I could to keep to myself. Going to school was difficult
for me. I wasn't very popular in school, but I didn't mind that. As a child, I felt out of place and I
strived to have the feeling of being noticed. At home, my life was unfortunately no different. My life
began to feel as though I was a record on repeat and I had no way of stopping it. I needed to put
myself out there, but I wasn't ready. Until I made the decision to take dance lessons at a local
company. The beauty of dance always caught my eye. The way the dancers gracefully leaped across
the stage mesmerized me. We got on the phone with the Studio and signed me up for the earliest I
could come. Within that week, my life slowly began to change and I went with my gut. The next
day, my mom and I stood outside the studio door for what felt like an eternity. "Don't be afraid, go
in" I faintly heard my mom say. I walked in and all eyes were on me as I entered. I felt my stomach
drop and my heart thumped in my throat. The studio was massive compared to me. Everything was
intimidating, but I felt at home there. The beats of the base mixed smoothly with the muffled voices
of teachers from other rooms. Over time, the rest of the class slowly trickled in. We were lead into a

My Childhood : A Short Story : My Grandma's Story
The sharp sound of shattering glass rang in my ears as I jumped down to my living room floor. I
looked down to my feet as they were being stabbed with dozens of glass shards. The realization of
what happened didn't start until my uncle swooped in to pick me up like I was a feather.
I was five years of age, living in my old house in Illinois. I was playing with my brothers at the time
I heard the knock at the door. My dog, Sammy, who was sitting near my brothers and I, sat up and
walked over to investigate. Footsteps also approached the front door.
My mom's voice yelling, "Grandma's here!" was like the start gun in a race. My brothers and I
bolted to greet my grandmother with hugs. My grandma nowadays doesn't seem that tall, but back
then, she was like a giant to me. She towered over my brothers and I. She smelt of fresh vegetables
with the slight scent my dog's brother, Coga. Her voice boomed over Sammy's slight whimpering of
excitement. "Hey kids! It's Grandma!" she said. Giving us each a hug and a kiss, she put down a big
bag of McDonalds. Our eyes grew wide as we looked at the bag. Noticing our stares she said,
"That's for dinner, boys," slight looks of sadness came to our eyes, but quickly faded as we realized
that supper was close. My brothers and I tailed grandma to the living room while she greeted my
uncle Tim. My uncle is quite tall, easily over six foot. My family's body style is mostly tall and
chunky. To put it bluntly, if I were to rate his size on a

Analysis Of Apostrophe To The Ocean
George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron, was born on January 22, 1788 in London and passed away on
April 19, 1824 due to a fever in Missologi, Greece according to Marchand. He had a rough life due
to his father abandoning him and his mother having schizophrenia. He was self–conscious as a child
due to his clubfoot and had a nurse who helped care for him and also abused him (Marchand).
Byron is known for his great role in the Romantic Movement, and is considered a great inspiration
for romantic poetry during his era (Marchand).
The poem, "Apostrophe to the Ocean" written by George Gordon Byron expresses his love for the
ocean and nature through numerous different writing styles and techniques. The poem is dedicated
to the deep, powerful, and ferocious ocean, the main subject of this poem is humanity and
civilization versus nature and the universe. Byron's view of humans versus nature is revealed
through his belief that the power of nature is inseparable and that it is greater than any human or
civilization. Bryon depicts his love for the ocean through, literary techniques, his thoughts about
industrialization and romantic writing styles. This poem is unique and more patently autobiographic
unlike other romantic poems that were written during his era in the early 18th century by other
fellow writers. Byron's poem is entirely focused on the beauty and the fascination that he endures
with the ocean. The title of the poem indicates the subject of the poem; it also has the first literary
device that is seen throughout this poem. The word apostrophe is when the writer speaks to the
ocean as if it can hear and respond. As a child Byron becomes aware of realities imperfections but
the skepticism of his disillusionment coexisted with a lifelong propensity to seek ideal perfection in
all of life experiences (Marchand). In the first stanza Byron expresses and underlines the feelings,
fascination and his overwhelming love that he endures with the ocean.
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where non intrudes
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar.
I love not Man the less, but Nature more. (1–5) In addition, the author speaks to the ocean, about his
feelings

The Crucibles Monologue: Tituba Essay
Tituba's Monologue
[Sitting down, eyes closed and hands gathered, praying] "Dear heavenly father, I bow my head
down to you now, asking you for your forgiveness. I have committed a grave sin even resulting in
someone being executed. I wronged you father and I shouldn't have confessed to having connections
with the devil.
[Stand up] Who knows now what the results would have been if I was honest and kept to your name
until the end. The beatings and all of Mr Hale's questions were just too much for me. In the end I

hoping it would all just end.
But no, I was wrong, they kept questioning me if the devil came with anyone else. Being confused

Now that this nonsense has gone so far, what would the judges do? Would they admit to their wrong

[Sit down on chair] On another note, how could Betty do that to me. At first when I saw her eyes
look lifeless as they stared out into space. I was extremely worried and scared but who knew it was
all just an act. How could she accuse me for witch craft too, after all those many years I served the
Parris family and looked after her so dearly.
[Pace the floor] I hope the truth doesn't come out any time soon. I can't begin to imagine what
accusations will be charged against me and the other girls. Although we deserve the punishments for
the serious sins we've committed. Especially because God's greatest gift, life, was taken away from
many innocent people.
Working under Mr Parris and his family was like prison itself. I hope I can get away from this
hypocritical town. I'll be damned, being forced into slavery at such a young age was enough for me!
But being accused for witch craft?! [Stamps foot in anger] Unjust! I hope I can soon be back at my
home, Barbodos and be free from all this ridiculer.

of my wrong doings and sins. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. In

The Death Of Snow
Lying in a disturbed patch of snow, curled up against a nearby tree as the twisted wreckage of a car
sat smoldering nearby is a slim wolf, in his early twenties. He sat motionless, the heavy flakes of
snow falling around him being the only source of motion, before a series of coughs disturbed the
scene. He squirmed to rest on all fours, retching in the snow, whatever food he had in his stomach
now mixed with the snow and ice on the ground. After the fit passed, he leaned back against the tree
with a few light coughs, wiping his muzzle with the torn sleeve of his sweater, a few flecks of vomit
catching on the fabric.
The caustic taste of bile in his throat, the young wolf let a groan escape his lips, his body riddled
with aches. Holding onto the tree for support, he rose on unsteady legs, swaying heavily. Taking a
few small steps , he recovered his composure bit by bit, as he stumbled to the nearby wreckage of a
car, it a twisted caricature of the original 2008 Ford Taurus that it was before the crash.

A Short Story : There's A Boy '
There's a boy.
I'm pressed up against the wall of a room and he's in the middle, on a steel surgical table. There isn't
any sheet, and it doesn't look very clean. The room is a box, made of cold stone and concrete with
not even a rug on the floor to warm it up. Maybe a rug, at least, would cover up the dark stains on
the floor. If I squint, I can see the drain set into the concrete where his blood and tears will mix,
headed who knows where.
I know this place, because I've been here before. I've seen exactly what's about to happen.
The boy is not unconscious, unlike myself, but he's silent. I'd like to think he knows what's going to
happen too, but he doesn't. This is simply a loop I am caught in and I can do nothing but watch. I'd

He looks nervous, outwardly, but I haven't seen anything behind those eyes yet. Not in this world,
not in this moment. His black hair is a heavy contrast to the shining blond of the first, and it is true
that they are different. I don't know their names, but by actions alone I could pick them out from a
sea of others. The girl is not in this one.
On the table, the boy coughs. In reality, he is not a boy, but maybe a man of 19. He isn't much
younger than the others, I know, but he looks so small. I can see him freeze in horror at drawing
attention to himself so soon. He probably thinks coughing is better than choking to death on the
need, but he is so wrong. I wish I could warn him. I slide along the wall until I hit the corner. I want
to cry, but I'm too numb. Watching with dead eyes, I see the blonde man place his hand on the bare
chest of the boy on the table. From this far away it looks like a friendly gesture, a companionable
touch. My stomach twists at his gasp of pain, one look at the muscles in the huge man's arm tells me
how hard he's pressing down. God, he looks so, so tiny. If I stood up, I know I could see the fear in
his eyes, the confusion in the set of his mouth. But I don't want to see that. The dark haired man who
was previously just standing there, watching them, leaves the room and the blonde lifts his hand. In
my mind's eye I see the dark handprint leaking up to the skin on his chest. That had to hurt, but he

place, a better time. When I didn't need to run away. Was that real? I thought to myself. then shook
my head softly, in denial of something that I didn't even know. I was ripped away from my
daydream much too soon. I could have stayed there, I would have been happy enough living in a

him. "Get up and run," The voice said angrily, speaking to me once again, and a hand gripped my
wrist right before I was jerked to my feet. "Run." It repeated. I wanted to look. I wanted to see
whose voice this was. If there was a chance I knew it. But my eyes were too busy making a path for
my feet to follow. I could feel the danger brushing past me, through me, running wild in the air. It
wrapped around my soul and pulled itself into me, finding a home. So I took off again, determined

I finally rolled out of bed and opened my eyes to reveal an isolated stone room with a bed dead in
the center of it and nothing else to speak of. I opened the big, creaky door only to witness the
lemon–sour light penetrating my eyes and overpowering the distant horizon. Then after a few paces,
I opened another door which led straight the main hall where I was being awaited. The meeting was
in session when I felt the ground tremble beneath my feet and then a sudden scream for help which
was soon overcome by the sound of guns firing all around. "TAKE COVER!" a man yelled and I
darted towards the table I saw on my way in. What was going on?! This had never happened before.
Were we being invaded by whatever was outside those walls? My thoughts were interrupted by a

My Feelings About Jeezy : An Artist Who Is Eight Studio...
My feelings about Jeezy are about as complex as they come for an artist who is eight studio albums
deep, signed to a major label (Def Jam) and who I 've reviewed multiple times over the years. You 'd
think I 'd have TAFKA Young Jeezy figured out by now, but the very thing that keeps him endlessly
fascinating is that I just can 't put my finger on my feelings about him. Here 's the crux of the
problem – Jeezy 's got the "it factor" that so many rappers, entertainers, athletes and actors crave but
never seem to achieve. There 's absolutely no denying when you listen to him whether on a record or
for an interview that Jeezy (real name Jay Wayne Jenkins) has the charisma and personality of a
hip–hop superstar. He 's got the swagger, the charisma, and he acts like he 's carrying Atlanta on his
back all on his own. Of course that 's not any more true than when Biggie appeared to be carrying
Brooklyn, but if you have the sheer force of presence to make people think a rap scene couldn 't
exist without you, then you 'd better be making a ton of money from it. There 's no doubt Jeezy 's
Atlanta drawl stands out even on a crowded remix with ten other stars, and when it comes to making
hit songs that stand out in a crowded field of hip–hop celebrities, Jeezy seems to have two or three
bangers with every single album. He 's got the chutzpah to call himself "God" in a song title and
brag about turning water into wine in the lyrics, and even if you hate it for being sacrilegious I

Be Brave
I could feel my heart pounding through my chest as I peered over the waterfall. My feet had cuts
from standing on the sharp rocks. The lush green trees surrounded me. Water rushed off the edge
plummeting thirty feet to the ground. The Screams of people throwing themselves off is
unforgettable. I could feel the stream tugging at my feet and pulling me close to the edge. The smell

Listening to the peaceful sounds of the waves crashing on the shore miles away helped me relax.
The problem is the only way down is to jump. That feeling I get when my stomach drops is one of

Stuck there I knew I was terrified. The entire time I was telling myself I was brave enough to jump,

Analysis Of Apostrophe To The Ocean
The poem, "Apostrophe to the Ocean" written by George Gordon Byron expresses his love for the
ocean and nature through numerous different writing styles and techniques. The poem is dedicated
to the mighty ocean, and the main subject of this poem is about humans versus nature. Byron's view
of humans versus nature is revealed through his belief that the power of nature is inseparable and
that it is greater than any human or civilization. Bryon depicts his love for the ocean through,
literary techniques, his thoughts about industrialization and romantic writing styles. This poem is
unique and unlike other romantic poems that were written during his era in the early 18th century.
Byron's poem is entirely focused on the beauty and the fascination that he endures with the ocean.
The title of the poem indicates the subject of the poem; it also has the first literary device that is seen
throughout this poem. The word apostrophe is when the writer speaks to the ocean as if it can hear
and respond. In the first stanza Byron expresses and underlines the feelings, fascination and his
overwhelming love that he endures with the ocean. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There

walking towards the waterpark, they passed two girls who were identical twins, headed to the
amazing new waterpark also. They entered the waterpark. But within a half hour, the waterpark

gone! When he regained consciousness, he found out he was trapped under what looked like the
remains of a skyscraper. The smoke clouded up the air so you couldn't see anything, and

Effects of the Apostrophe on Communication in 'Ode to the...
Effects of the Apostrophe on Communication in "Ode to the Apostrophe" Elizabeth Zeitlin's poem
titled "Ode to the Apostrophe" immediately reveals the topic of the poem; with an "Ode" referring to
a type of lyrical poem meant to be sung, and the subject being the apostrophe. Zeitlin shows through
an informal and welcoming style that the apostrophe is an important vessel of communication,
acting as a messenger with no innate characteristics of good or bad. In that regard, the misuse of the
apostrophe leads to conflict and often results in miscommunication. Towards the end of the poem,
Zeitlin elaborates on the human nature of mistaking the state of being, with the act of possession.
"Ode to the Apostrophe" offers an informal and unique perspective on the disadvantages of the
apostrophe on communication, while also demonstrating human nature; encouraging the reader to
examine our tendency to criticize the apostrophe where it is not needed. A cursory analysis of "Ode
to the Apostrophe" reveals a varied and irregular meter that corresponds to an "Ode". This choice of
poem style is effective when addressing a particular subject; hence, the use of the ode in "Ode to the
Apostrophe". The poem is written as a free verse with little rhyming and a relaxed and informal tone
while still achieving an informative aura. Themes that are prominent in the poem include human
nature and the apostrophe. In addition to vocabulary, Zeitlin utilizes poetic devices such as similes,
enjambment

Character Analysis Of Lucy Lucy
Character Analysis
When we first meet Lucy, it's sort of a shock that she's even remotely related to David. In contrast
with David's sleek, suave, sophisticated ways – pouring red wine, watching art films, teaching at a
university in a major metropolitan area – Lucy is an earthy woman who lives out in the country,
works the land for a living, and doesn't pay attention to fashion or body image. We learn that Lucy's
home was once a commune, but now she's the only person who hasn't moved away:
[...] now here she is, flowered dress, bare feet and all, in a house full of the smell of baking, no
longer a child playing at farming but a solid countrywoman, a boervrou . (7.5)
We don't know about you, but this both strikes us as a little odd and makes us more interested in
Lucy – why should she decide to stay on the farm even when her friends (and lover) leave? Lucy
never gives us these answers up front, but she keeps our curiosity churning every step of the way
through the book. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Slowly through the course of the novel, we learn that Lucy is a lesbian and that she used to live with
a woman named Helen, who has since moved on. Lucy's sexual identity doesn't just tell us about
Lucy's views on sex; it also provides a platform upon which David thinks about women and
sexuality in general. In some ways, David feels more at ease talking to Lucy about his affair with
Melanie because both he and she have experience with women, romantically and sexually. Of
course, we learn pretty early on in the novel that Lucy isn't just going to see things from David's side
of the coin; her experience as a victim of sexual assault inevitably prods her to see things from
Melanie's perspective – or, you might argue, a more universal female perspective – as

The Worst Day Of My Life Essay
4:30 am, my alarm wakes me from dreams of home. I 'm confused, "Where am I?", I asked myself.
Then I remembered, I 'm at the Naval Academy, Bancroft hall to be more specific. "Another day,
Another dollar", I reluctantly said for the seventh and final time. My bunkmate heard my alarm and
woke with a similar reaction. "You know what today is right?", he said to me in an uneasy voice.
"Yeah, today 's wet and sandy, the so called worst day of your life. Or so I 'm told.", I replied. "You
know there 's a reason they have wet and sandy for the final day", my bunkmate said. "If they had
wet and sandy on the first day, everybody would just go home early, but since today 's the last day,
you get to leave directly after" he stated. "It 's like ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
About 1 mile into the disgustingly difficult task it began to rain, hard. As I crawled ever forward
behind my squad members who were running, the pouring rain filled the dirt path with mud. Now I
was essentially swimming in a foot of mud, and the only thing that came to my mind is "Don 't give
up". Every ten feet or so I would look ahead and mark a tree in the distance and say to myself "just
get to that tree, if you get to that tree then everything will be alright" My method of pushing forward
got me to the hospital point beach, While I was completely exhausted, my squad members were fine
because they got to run on two feet, I had to run on four. The workout, appropriately titled "Wet and
Sandy" was set to begin. "Okay, now that everybody is here run into the Chesapeake Bay and cover
yourself with as much sand as possible. Then come back to hospital point, you have 30 seconds.
Go". The entire squad bolted for the sea and began to cover themselves with sand. As quickly as
possible we threw sand all over our bodies, fully clothed mind you, and ran back to hospital point.
"33 seconds" the two seals stated with a smile on their faces. "You didn 't make the time, so know
your gonna do the exact same thing until we say stop," they said. For the next 25 minutes, we
continuously ran into the Chesapeake Bay, covered ourselves sand and sprinted back to hospital
point. All along the way, I would look in the distance, mark a spot on the ground and say "just get to

Child Is Missing, And I Lost
Before Eleven The police are knocking on my effervescence covered door, a child is missing, and I
lost exactly $39.94 along with the dryness and intactness of my clothing. Moreover, I 'm stuck with
a hungry dog and only minutes to save my wonderful self. In order to asses such a situation, how
about we go back to the beginning? Now is the time to queue the 'back to the past' sound effect in
your head. Albeit having known the Wattersons for two–thirds of my life, surprisingly, I never
babysat them. Well, at least not until that day. I didn 't mind babysitting the Watterson 's kids. Sitting
was a side job that helped tie the loose financial ends up. Along with my adoration of children, my
mother says that I 'm a natural, so babysitting is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Having a centimeter width of pages left to read, I glanced at the clock that read 7:42 and slumber
cast its shadow on me, forcing my eyelids to shut. However, it did not prevent me from catching a
whiff of roasting marshmallows as I took my last wakeful breath. I woke up to the clattering of pots.
I made a bolt for the kitchen. I frantically looked around to find a pot overturned on a counter;
melted marshmallows ran down the side. I tiptoed to see over the counter a befuddled Alexis. With
wide eyes, I grasped her by the sides of her torso and lifted her up onto the island. "Are you okay?!"
I exclaimed with concern. "Yea, but I 'm really sorry," she sniveled, "I just wanted some s 'mores
and you looked so pretty when you were sleeping. I didn 't want to disturb you..." Looking into her
apologetic eyes, I sighed, "It's okay. I 'll make some for you and your brother. Go change into a
clean pair of pajamas and bring Jamie downstairs. We 'll watch some Looney Tunes." She was on
her way to dash out of the kitchen, but I added with a hint of worry in my voice, "Are you sure you
're okay, Alexis?" With a vigorous nod, she darted out of the kitchen. Before I cleaned up the mess, I
took a glimpse at the digital clock on the oven that read 7:59, and remembered I was to give Jamie a
warm bubble bath two hours before his curfew. After I rummaged through four cabinets, I found a
cherry blossom essence filled soap bottle. I left

Reaction Paper On The Glass Castle

  • 1. Reaction Paper On The Glass Castle In this book, The Glass Castle there are many instances in which the Walls family goes through many different difficulties with their house, household, car, eating situation and much more. There are also many times where they have been through abuse and bullying which is so terrible, that these children had to face this, plus everything else they were already facing at home. This was such a powerful and eye opening book, it taught me that they went through so many problems with their life and still managed to stay strong and positive. It even showed me that they didn't have the greatest, most responsible parents in the world but they all still listened followed and cared their parents. Although, there were many situations when the Walls parents really did care for their children, so much that they taught them living values and everything to know about living life fearlessly. Initially, this text is so powerful to the reason that they went through many problems in their living situations, that people know still have a huge difficulty going through, which is very heartbreaking. One troubling experience they had to withstand as children it their home was the food limitations. In the book it said, "I'd stay in one of the stalls with the door locked and my feet propped up so that no one would recognize my shoes. When other girls came in and threw their lunch bags in the garbage pails, I'd go retrieve them." This is an example of how they struggled a lot ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Speech About My Journey My journey I am very humbled to be in front of you today. The Philip from 3 years ago would have never imagined himself on the Principia Ridgeway stage giving a senior speech in front of such an assembly, not even in his wildest dreams. Unlike everyone else, i didn't have that much time to think about senior speeches, these were just things that I heard of and saw only in the movies, so you can imagine how much of a movie celebrity I feel right now. How much I wish my friends back home could see me now, they wouldn't believe that I finally got to put on a suit that fits me. Even though at that time i wasn't able to see this day, having to stand in front of you giving you an insight of my journey to Principia is such an honour and privilege. Ever since an aunt of mine told my mother about Christian Science and introduced part of my family to, it turned out to be the answer to the life questions that most of my family members had. It was later on that i came to find out about it at church that not a day ever passed that i didn't badger about it to my mum until she finally gave in to actually putting in an application for me. I was in the boy's dorm in school when i got the call from my mum telling me that she had put in my application to be accepted to attend principa. I told to repeat this statement then i put the phone speaker that everyone around me could hear it. The school I went to was small and smelt like mold or old ladies most of the time. I was the kid that sat in the corner doing finger paintings and cutting cool designs into paper to make people chains and snowflakes. I was poor but I didn't care cause I had what I needed and everything I wished for in a family. One day me and a friend where outside and she was bragging about her clothes "Shea look at my clothes they sparkle" she had said to me as I looked at her purple sparkling shirt with a kitten on it. "Ya it really id sparkly it might make all ur clothes have sparkles." we laughed at the though but I became jealous of the shirt and started feeling bad for myself Because all my clothes were hand me downs and all stained up or torn up. I went home that day and told my mom what happened and how I felt as we did every day and she told me something i will never forget "Its not about the clothes you wear or the money your family has its about how your family treats you and how you treat others around you." • 7. Character Analysis : ' The Curse Words On The Wall ' Chapters 25–26 Left Side Journal At this point, I was struggling to understand the ending and why Holden wouldn't tell us what happened after him. I was curious of what will happen in the last chapter and I expected so much, but the ending was honestly really disappointing. Not only for me, but everyone else who has read this book. It can be inferred, but I wish I had clarification from Holden himself what had happened. Again, I still focused on finding major themes. One of the examples of the theme of immaturity is the curse words on the wall. I focused more on that because it supported the idea that Holden doesn't want to grow up. However, I think there is something more to it where Holden finally realized that he can't not grow up, but he is still upset that there are these curse words around Phoebe's school, knowing that little kids wonder what those words mean. Again, I did not sympathize with Holden because he doesn't seem interested at all about changing his unhealthy lifestyle. Wherever he is, whether in a psych ward or hospital, it is evident that he still doesn't apply himself to the real world to try to get better. Chapters 25–26 Right Side Journal Questions Chapter 25 Holden gets frightened when someone shows him some affection. Why is that and how is it significant? Why is Holden sure that he has cancer and why is he so nonchalant about it? Why was he scared that no one would ever see him again? How does this contradict the theme of isolation? Why was he angry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

My one chance to settle the score and truly prove that I was better, was gone. My coaches and friends tried to tell me how good I did and how lucky he got, but it only made the pain worse. They put into perspective exactly how close I was to beating him, and it just made me think more. Think about how this was his last year, and how I would never be able to avenge my defeat. It made me feel like everything that I had worked for all season was lost in a split second, one that I couldn't take back. The thought of regionals and state were starting to come up a little more this late in the year. I knew that I would have to wrestle Roy again, one way or another. Regionals came up before I knew it and I won my first and second matches easily with pins, but I knew my third wouldn't be so easy. Sure enough, I checked the brackets and Roy had won his first two as well. This only meant one thing, Roy and I had a third date. I spent the next couple of hours as a nervous wreck awaiting the match. Then I heard the booming voice of the announcer call out our names and I headed for the mat. The match had little excitement except for a few close calls, and at the end of the third period it was tied 3–3. Overtime is a good place for a Hotchkiss wrestler to be because we are in so much better shape than everyone else. Sure I was in better shape than Roy, but I will have to admit he was a bit stronger, all right a lot stronger. He ended up grabbing my leg with no technique and jerking it to his body. He got me off my feet and took me down. Roy had beat me for the first time in three matches. I had out wrestled him until last 5 seconds when I let my guard down. I was crushed by the defeat and I vowed to myself that if I wrestled him again at state that it wouldn't happen twice. • 13. Examples Of Apostrophe In Frederick Douglass Most of this excerpt from Frederick Douglass's autobiography is written in a narrative style; however, Douglass chooses to deviate from the narrative in the fourth paragraph, and which maybe describe as the dramatic monologue. Douglass uses apostrophe, exclamatory sentences, and symbol in order to illustrate his miserable life as a slave and how he was desperate to gain his freedom. Douglass uses apostrophe to display how he was feeling upon seeing the boats on Chesapeake Bay. The story was narrated by him, and then he portrays his monologue to the boat which makes the fourth paragraph stands out from the rest of the paragraphs. He addresses the boats in way as if the boats are capable of understanding his life as a slave under savage mental and physical violence of slaveholders, "The glad ship is gone; she hides in the dim distance. I am left in the hottest hell of unending slavery." Douglass was made to be a slave for life with no escape. He was made to follow whatever the slaveholders told him to do whereas the boats were able to travel from places to places. The use of apostrophe enhances his purpose as it helps the audience to ... He compares himself to the boats. He depicts how the boats are able to move freely whereas he is held in lifelong bondage. It is evident that he also uses parallel sentences with antithesis. He conveys some sense of complexity in himself and a greater insight to his feelings. In the story "The Seventh Man" a the so called "Seventh Man" is someone who feels responsible for his friends death, in a tsunami. "The Seventh Man" should not have to feel responsible for his friends death. It isn't entirely his fault, but the cause of mother nature and natural occurrences. He feels responsible however because he thinks that their may have been enough time for "The Seventh Man" to grab his friend, (k) from the ocean wave but he was frozen in shock and could not move. Based on this "The Seventh Man" feels responsible for the death of his friend and has guilt for life after these events. Based on this evidence from "The Seventh Man" he probably should not have to feel bad about the death of his friend but more at peace because of mother natures decision. Throughout the story the fact is repeated over and that "The Seventh Man" does feel bad about his friends death but he really should not have to, it really isn't his fault. If his feet did not freeze in shock he still probably couldn't have saved K. It just wasn't meant to be that way, it was Ks time to go and for some reason he was taken by that wave in the circle of life. Some think it could have been different maybe if "The Seventh Man" was not with K but based on knowledge from the story it probably was his time to go no matter what. • 19. Lynne Truss Apostrophe Reading Lynne Truss's book was a truly humbling experience. I consider myself to be a decent to middling writer, yet truss outlined dozens of mistakes that I make on a day to day basis. Nearly the first half of the book is devoted to an examination of the comma (a punctuation mark which I clearly failed to use properly). I've always been a bit unsure as to how (or if) an apostrophe is used differently between plural and singular possessives. Truss gives a particularly succinct description of how to use the apostrophe. If the word itself if plural (eg. Women), then the apostrophe comes before the s. If the word is ambiguous (eg. Boy), then the apostrophe comes after the s (eg. The boys' hats). I found the number of exceptions to the rules for apostrophe use staggering; certain names require an apostrophe and an s to be considered plural, and others require only an apostrophe. Since there is no firm rule for many words, even those ending in –es, it seems that the decision comes down to the particular house style an author is writing under. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This was one of the first grammatical mistakes that you pointed out to me this summer. I found various articles and opinions regarding their usage online; however, Truss sums up the various rules quite tidily. For the most part, "however" must be used with a preceding semicolon, but two commas can be used if the sentence structure is not of a compound nature. For example, "the food, however, is quite bland." I'm sure that I will still slip up occasionally, but it was useful to see the rules laid out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It was a haunting feeling, but not more than the eeriness of this place. Without a soul around, the lonesome figure walked aimlessly around the abandoned amusement park for what seemed like forever. Fear is a strong word, it can mean a variety of things and lead to a variety of things depending on who you are. Some people aren't that fazed by any sort of fear or just act like they aren't but for me a guy who is about 6'1 foot, so pretty tall and big for my age, well, i'm the complete opposite. My fear caused me to shake and tremble as if the world was coming to an end. It makes me feel safe around no one. Being put through my fear makes me look back on my life and ask myself, was it all worth it for this? It makes me shrink and fall to size of of a humming bird. My stomach starts to feel like it never has before almost like something terrible is tearing my insides out one by one. My head is spinning in circles and my hands are trembling to the point where I think they might fall off. Fear, my fear was heights and I was terrified of them. Of course, I hadn't always been afraid of heights throughout my whole life. In fact, in my elementary and Pre–K days I loved heights, well I wouldn't say I loved them but I didn't mind them. I use to climb trees and jump off diving boards at the pool and things of that matter. Ar times I was maybe 40–50 feet off the ground sometimes when I was doing certain things like hiking in the mountains when I was on vacation in Wyoming (which is a great place to visit if you're into that kind of naturalistic stuff) or riding my bike to the top of peaks and none of it bothered me. But then as my years went on things started to change. I started realizing the negative and dark side of being up in the clouds. When I got my first phone ,which was on my 13th birthday if i'm correct, and more technology started to make its evolution I started witnessing videos of people climbing some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world in countries and major cities like New York, Hong Kong, Chicago, Dubai and many other places and others bungee jumping off 200 foot high cliffs. I started inspecting all these daredevils and their love for heights and I astonished it, but as soon as I found out the aftermath of some of these things my astonishment soon ceased to ... • 38. Analysis Of Apostrophe To The Ocean George Gordon Byron, Lord Byron, was born on January 22, 1788 in London and passed away on April 19, 1824 due to a fever in Missologi, Greece according to Marchand. He had a rough life due to his father abandoning him and his mother having schizophrenia. He was self–conscious as a child due to his clubfoot and had a nurse who helped care for him and also abused him (Marchand). Byron is known for his great role in the Romantic Movement, and is considered a great inspiration for romantic poetry during his era (Marchand). The poem, "Apostrophe to the Ocean" written by George Gordon Byron expresses his love for the ocean and nature through numerous different writing styles and techniques. The poem is dedicated to the deep, powerful, and ferocious ocean, the main subject of this poem is humanity and civilization versus nature and the universe. Byron's view of humans versus nature is revealed through his belief that the power of nature is inseparable and that it is greater than any human or civilization. Bryon depicts his love for the ocean through, literary techniques, his thoughts about industrialization and romantic writing styles. This poem is unique and more patently autobiographic unlike other romantic poems that were written during his era in the early 18th century by other fellow writers. Byron's poem is entirely focused on the beauty and the fascination that he endures with the ocean. The title of the poem indicates the subject of the poem; it also has the first literary device that is seen throughout this poem. The word apostrophe is when the writer speaks to the ocean as if it can hear and respond. As a child Byron becomes aware of realities imperfections but the skepticism of his disillusionment coexisted with a lifelong propensity to seek ideal perfection in all of life experiences (Marchand). In the first stanza Byron expresses and underlines the feelings, fascination and his overwhelming love that he endures with the ocean. There is a pleasure in the pathless woods, There is a rapture on the lonely shore, There is society where non intrudes By the deep Sea, and music in its roar. I love not Man the less, but Nature more. (1–5) In addition, the author speaks to the ocean, about his feelings ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Run, please, please just keep your feet on the ground, My thoughts whispered. Then against my minds will, my feet slid away causing me to slam against the ground with such force that I decided to stay. My thoughts drifting away to a better place, a better time. When I didn't need to run away. Was that real? I thought to myself. then shook my head softly, in denial of something that I didn't even know. I was ripped away from my daydream much too soon. I could have stayed there, I would have been happy enough living in a dream. But I guess that he wouldn't be there, and even if it seemed like he was it wouldn't really be him. "Get up and run," The voice said angrily, speaking to me once again, and a hand gripped my wrist right before I was jerked to my feet. "Run." It repeated. I wanted to look. I wanted to see whose voice this was. If there was a chance I knew it. But my eyes were too busy making a path for my feet to follow. I could feel the danger brushing past me, through me, running wild in the air. It wrapped around my soul and pulled itself into me, finding a home. So I took off again, determined not to slip this time. But I wouldn't get the chance, because as soon as I looked down I caught a glimpse of something on my hand and skidded to a halt. Hot. • 56. My Feelings About Jeezy : An Artist Who Is Eight Studio... My feelings about Jeezy are about as complex as they come for an artist who is eight studio albums deep, signed to a major label (Def Jam) and who I 've reviewed multiple times over the years. You 'd think I 'd have TAFKA Young Jeezy figured out by now, but the very thing that keeps him endlessly fascinating is that I just can 't put my finger on my feelings about him. Here 's the crux of the problem – Jeezy 's got the "it factor" that so many rappers, entertainers, athletes and actors crave but never seem to achieve. There 's absolutely no denying when you listen to him whether on a record or for an interview that Jeezy (real name Jay Wayne Jenkins) has the charisma and personality of a hip–hop superstar. He 's got the swagger, the charisma, and he acts like he 's carrying Atlanta on his back all on his own. Of course that 's not any more true than when Biggie appeared to be carrying Brooklyn, but if you have the sheer force of presence to make people think a rap scene couldn 't exist without you, then you 'd better be making a ton of money from it. There 's no doubt Jeezy 's Atlanta drawl stands out even on a crowded remix with ten other stars, and when it comes to making hit songs that stand out in a crowded field of hip–hop celebrities, Jeezy seems to have two or three bangers with every single album. He 's got the chutzpah to call himself "God" in a song title and brag about turning water into wine in the lyrics, and even if you hate it for being sacrilegious I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Analysis Of Apostrophe To The Ocean The poem, "Apostrophe to the Ocean" written by George Gordon Byron expresses his love for the ocean and nature through numerous different writing styles and techniques. The poem is dedicated to the mighty ocean, and the main subject of this poem is about humans versus nature. Byron's view of humans versus nature is revealed through his belief that the power of nature is inseparable and that it is greater than any human or civilization. Bryon depicts his love for the ocean through, literary techniques, his thoughts about industrialization and romantic writing styles. This poem is unique and unlike other romantic poems that were written during his era in the early 18th century. Byron's poem is entirely focused on the beauty and the fascination that he endures with the ocean. The title of the poem indicates the subject of the poem; it also has the first literary device that is seen throughout this poem. The word apostrophe is when the writer speaks to the ocean as if it can hear and respond. (1–5) In addition, the author speaks to the ocean, about his feelings towards the mighty power it has, the part that it plays in nature, and the power ... • 72. Effects of the Apostrophe on Communication in 'Ode to the... Effects of the Apostrophe on Communication in "Ode to the Apostrophe" Elizabeth Zeitlin's poem titled "Ode to the Apostrophe" immediately reveals the topic of the poem; with an "Ode" referring to a type of lyrical poem meant to be sung, and the subject being the apostrophe. Zeitlin shows through an informal and welcoming style that the apostrophe is an important vessel of communication, acting as a messenger with no innate characteristics of good or bad. In that regard, the misuse of the apostrophe leads to conflict and often results in miscommunication. Towards the end of the poem, Zeitlin elaborates on the human nature of mistaking the state of being, with the act of possession. "Ode to the Apostrophe" offers an informal and unique perspective on the disadvantages of the apostrophe on communication, while also demonstrating human nature; encouraging the reader to examine our tendency to criticize the apostrophe where it is not needed. A cursory analysis of "Ode to the Apostrophe" reveals a varied and irregular meter that corresponds to an "Ode". This choice of poem style is effective when addressing a particular subject; hence, the use of the ode in "Ode to the Apostrophe". The poem is written as a free verse with little rhyming and a relaxed and informal tone while still achieving an informative aura. Themes that are prominent in the poem include human nature and the apostrophe. In addition to vocabulary, Zeitlin utilizes poetic devices such as similes, enjambment ... In contrast with David's sleek, suave, sophisticated ways – pouring red wine, watching art films, teaching at a university in a major metropolitan area – Lucy is an earthy woman who lives out in the country, works the land for a living, and doesn't pay attention to fashion or body image. We learn that Lucy's home was once a commune, but now she's the only person who hasn't moved away: [...] now here she is, flowered dress, bare feet and all, in a house full of the smell of baking, no longer a child playing at farming but a solid countrywoman, a boervrou . (7.5) We don't know about you, but this both strikes us as a little odd and makes us more interested in Lucy – why should she decide to stay on the farm even when her friends (and lover) leave? In some ways, David feels more at ease talking to Lucy about his affair with Melanie because both he and she have experience with women, romantically and sexually. Of course, we learn pretty early on in the novel that Lucy isn't just going to see things from David's side of the coin; her experience as a victim of sexual assault inevitably prods her to see things from Melanie's perspective – or, you might argue, a more universal female perspective – as ...
