2. The ATAR is a rank, not a mark.
What is the ATAR?
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number
between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position
relative to all the students in their age group (ie all 16 to 20-year-
olds in NSW). So, an ATAR of 80.00 means that you are 20 per
cent from the top of your age group (not your Year 12 group).
Universities use the ATAR to help them, select students, for their
courses and admission to most tertiary courses is based on your
selection rank (your ATAR + any applicable adjustments). Most
universities also use other criteria when selecting students (eg a
personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an
audition, an interview or a test).

3. Meet Christine
Christine has been teaching HSC year after
year for almost 15 years. She thought she knew
all there was to teaching Business and Legal
Studies and gained some success with her
students achieving band 6s. That was the case
until she began marking the HSC
examinations.
Getting inside the minds of NESA on how they
interpret the syllabus requirements and curate
the marking criteria accordingly has really
opened Christine's eyes to what her students
needed to do to get their marks over the line.
Since then, she has taken a different approach
to her teaching style and has come up with
strategies which have since sky rocketed her
band 6 student results.
