Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects the synovial joints. It has a prevalence of about 3% worldwide and is more common in women. The disease is characterized by synovitis and joint destruction. Numerous cellular interactions drive the RA process, with proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1 and TNF-α playing key roles. Signs and symptoms include tender swollen joints, pain and stiffness. Treatment goals are to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent joint damage. Treatment approaches include medications like DMARDs and biologics, lifestyle modifications, physical therapy, and surgery.
