A fond farewell to a much missed batch of extraordinary people and 'Brilliant!' quizzers. Yet another example of great facts and cool trivia from AFMC's current dashing duo of QMs.
A fun quiz for all those who might seek to get acquainted with interesting trivia and cool things. Very general, very workoutable. We don't think Kolstylz is Koolstylz, so have fun.

The annual college Gen quiz held at AFMC returns for the year 2020, with the QMs Arnabh Sengupta and Anirudh Anilkumar coming out with a fun, largely accessible quiz.
Looks like they made another edition of nobody's least favourite quiz. This one is just like the others, except it isn't the others. More trivia, more fun, more points that don't matter. Quiz pro quo, you know, so quiz.
The first ever edition of nobody's least favourite quiz. Blessed by Ser Pounce, this one is for all the clever cats and all the kool kats. Filled with bits of fun trivia, why don't you give it a try? After all, the questions are all made up and the points don't matter. ;)
The third edition of Whose Session Is It Anyway, nobody's least favourite quiz is marked by... well, nothing very new. Another set of interesting questions, with a focus on pop culture and contemporary events.
A bloody good quiz (Pardon my French. And the proclivity for French that seems to be quite apparent in the quiz. Ah well, C'est la vie.) for all. Chock full of good stuff. Must quiz, 8/8.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
it describes the bony anatomy including the femoral head , acetabulum, labrum . also discusses the capsule , ligaments . muscle that act on the hip joint and the range of motion are outlined. factors affecting hip joint stability and weight transmission through the joint are summarized.

X is a famous tourist destination in the Bernese Oberland region of the Swiss Alps.
It is located in Bodeli, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and derives its name
from its geographical location.
Deep Purple famously performed here on an open air
stage in 1995.
Name X.
12. 4
X is a large, bipedal fictional creature with a thick tail. It has a brown hide with several
raised patches, and a cream coloured belly. It has large cream coloured ears and red
eyes, a short and rounded snout, with two protruding pointed teeth.
It is based on the real life animal, Y, with elements of Mongolian laminar armour, evident
in its helmet-like plate with ear flaps and its epaulettes.
Hence its name has been derived from Y, and the person Z, whose character this creature
matches- spurts of violent rage.
Name the fictional creature X, and/or Y and Z.
15. 5
X liked the work of 24-year-old John Pasche, who accepted £50 (about $77) to
create the artwork. The story goes that X wanted a likeness of Kali, the Hindu
goddess of everlasting energy. Pasche found greater inspiration in X himself,
rather than Kali.
"I went into this sort of wood-paneled boardroom and there he was," Pasche said.
"Face-to-face with him, the first thing you were aware of was the size of his lips
and mouth.“
What did this lead to? Also, give X.
18. 6
During the early days of World War II, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence suspected
that Italian and German agents were entering the United States through New York, and
that these facilities were susceptible to sabotage. The loss of SS Normandie in February
1942, especially, raised fears and suspicions in the Navy about possible sabotage in the
Eastern ports. A Navy Intelligence Unit, B3, assigned more than a hundred agents to
investigate possible Benito Mussolini supporters within the population on the
waterfront. Their efforts were fruitless.
The Navy contacted Meyer Lansky, a known associate of X about a deal with X. The
State of New York, X and the U.S. Navy struck a deal in which X guaranteed full
assistance in providing intelligence to the Navy. In addition, X allegedly guaranteed no
dockworker strikes throughout the war.

In the south-east of Romania, in Constanța, there lies a barren featureless plain. Below it lies a
cave that has remained isolated for 5.5 million years. Despite a complete absence of light and a
poisonous atmosphere, the cave is crawling with life. There are unique spiders, scorpions,
woodlice and centipedes, many never before seen by humans, and all of them owe their lives to a
strange floating mat of bacteria.
To enter, you must first lower yourself by rope 20m down a narrow shaft dug into the ground.
The only light is from your helmet, which bounces around the walls as you descend. You must
then climb down through narrow limestone tunnels coated in an ochre clay, in pitch darkness and
temperatures of 25 °C. These paths eventually open out into a central cavern containing a lake.
In the lake room, the atmosphere is heavy with harmful gases, principally carbon dioxide as well
as the hydrogen sulphide from the water.
Despite the dark and the dangerous gases, Movile Cave is crawling with life. So far 48 species
have been identified, including 33 found nowhere else in the world.
How is this cave unique, in environmental terms? (Class 10 EVS might come handy)
25. 8
This beverage has different names in different parts of India.
In the Eastern parts (Bengal, Jharkhand, Orissa, Assam), it is called X, which has been
derived from the Mandarin name of this beverage, and is quite similar sounding to
the Mandarin word. Interestingly, the Portugese also use the term X, who also got that
term through their maritime trade with China.
In most parts of Northern and Western Indian though, the term Y is used, whose roots
are unclear, but it is similar to the Slavic name of this beverage, and hence Y sounds
similar to the words used by Slovaks, Latvians, Slovenians, Lithuanians, Bulgarians and
other Slavic populations.
X and Y sound quite similar, and differ in a single vowel, when written in English. Give
X and Y.
28. 9
Listen to the audio.
This is X, reciting a poem by Y, in the occasion of Z. Y was the favourite poet of
someone, who is the main person concerning the occasion Z. This person was
also a great friend and colleague of X. Even we have fond memories of these two
people together. All three were hugely famous, being forerunners in being called
the “Greatest Ever” in their respective fields.
Give X,Y and Z.
31. 10
When X were first invented, in the 14th century, they were displayed in public places,
usually on cathedrals. Most were only ornamental at first.
They were of special value to the common people, who were almost universally
illiterate. Most peasants, even in Italy, could not read Roman numerals, and most
importantly, did not know how to subtract. They performed calculations by counting
fingers or drawing slash marks.
This was the reason for a specific form of depiction of something on these X. The
depiction could have been in two forms, but since illiterate people would be unable to
comprehend, the simpler form was taken. Now they have been replaced by the other
form, with advances in literacy, and globalisation, but some of the older forms still
exist.
What am I talking about?
34. 11
The term X itself originated in the 16th century. One of the first written accounts
of it was in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor when the character of
Falstaff demands – “Go fetch me a quart of sack; put a ______ in’t.” To translate,
he’s asking for a great deal of wine with a piece of _______ in it. It was actually
quite a common practice at the time. This is thought to be due to the quality of
wine in the past- it was in many cases inferior to our modern vintages. Thus,
placing a piece of _______ within a jug was supposed to soak up some of the
acidity and improve the flavour.
Over the centuries, this term has transformed, and now refers to a different
custom, with very weak links to the origin of the term.
Give X.
37. 12
X is the only word in the English language, which is derived from the ancient Mayan
language.
It is derived from the Mayan word “Xoc”. One of the first mentions of the word in
a dictionary, is in an anonymous work from 1689, which defines a X as a “shifting
knave”. In other words, a crook, dodgy sort or general all-round bad guy.
Bailey’s Dictionary in 1724 used “scearan” as the likely origin for the word: a saxon term
meaning “cut to pieces”. Webster took a different tack in his 1828 dictionary, accepting
a theory that it comes from the Greek word “carcharias”,meaning “sharp tooth”, even
though that word clearly has a typical Greek hard “c” sound, not the soft start of X.
These days, Oxford English Dictionary just says “of obscure origin”.
Give X.

This photo was taken during the opening ceremony of the Estadio De Luz, in Lisbon, in
2003.
For many years, this photo was popularised to have been taken from a game between X
and Manchester United. Fans of X have been known to call their home stadium as “hell”,
flooding the stadium with the home colours of red and yellow, to intimidate opponents,
and this internet hoax just added to that.
This became one of the biggest internet hoaxes related to the footballing world ever,
until New York Times writer Graham Ruthven openly pointed out the hoax. Even today, a
Google search with the keywords “X devil” will show different resolutions of this same
image, and many more pages, praising the efforts of X fans to have created this effect!
Give the name of the club X.
44. 14
In 1945, X and Y embarked upon a formidable collaboration — to create a six-minute
sequence combining animation with live dancers, in the process, inventing a new
animation technique inspired by Freud’s work. The film, titled Destino, tells the tragic
love story of Chronos, the personification of time, who falls in love with a mortal
woman as the two float across the surrealist landscapes of _____________. The poetic,
wordless animation features a score by Mexican composer Armando Dominguez
performed by Dora Luz. The project was abandoned, but in 2003, Y’s cousin completed
and released it.
As fascinating as the film itself is the juxtaposition of the two creative geniuses behind
it, each bringing his own life-lens to the project — X described the film as “A magical
display of the problem of life in the labyrinth of time” and Y called it “A simple story
about a young girl in search of true love.”
Who are X and Y?

Real-life naval-intelligence officer Sir Mansfield Smith-Cumming, in 1909, was a
founder of Britain’s Secret Service Bureau.
He was well known for initialing documents with the letter “C”. After his death, the
letter came to stand for “Chief,” and other Secret Service heads used it too.
Other than this, Sir Mansfield Smith-Cumming has also contributed to the field of
literature, unknowingly, in a similar manner.

Nestled in the magnificent Nallamala Hills in Andhra Pradesh, Ahobilam is the stronghold of the powerful deity X. The town is split into
two levels- Eguva (Upper) Ahobilam and Diguva (Lower) Ahobilam. There are 10 shrines in this area-
• Ugra X Temple- The X here is “Ugra”, a roused, fierce God, whose idol is believed to be self-manifest, and not carved by humans.
• Lakshmi X Temple- The X here is in the “Shanta” mode, a becalmed God, beatific and munificent.
• Bhargava X Temple- Placed near a pond where sage Bhargava had prayed.
• Yogananda X Temple- This has the God in the classic yogic posture, the padmasana.
• Chatravata X Temple- This houses a joyous form of X, with a smile on his face, while his left hand keeps “Taala” or rhythm.
• Kroda/Varaha X Temple- The idol here is a combination of Varaha and X, and depicts the God in the form of a boar, carrying Earth on its
shoulders.
• Karanja X Temple- It is said that Hanuman meditated here, but when X appeared to reward him, Hanuman refused to recognise his God
in any form other than Rama’s. As a concession, X donned Rama’s characteristic weapon, the bow, and that is how the idol in this temple
looks like.
• Malola X Temple- Here, X is in a genial, romantic mood, with Goddess Lakshmi on his knees.
• Jwala X Temple- Legend says that this is the place where X had carried out his great task, for which he was sent. A small pond called
Raktakundam is nearby, where X had washed his body after the task.
• Pavana X Temple- The jewel of the pilgrimage, the most difficult to access, and here, X is worshipped by Shakta rites, and animal
sacrifices are routine.
► Who is this deity X?

The story goes, that Captain Hanson Gregory was at the helm of his ship, eating
what was then known as an Olykoek (Dutch), when stormy weather arose.
Gregory, needing both hands to steer the ship, spontaneously rammed the
Olykoek over one of the spokes of the steering wheel, and was impressed with his
own creativity.
This is the supposed origin of what practice, which continues even today?

The Pole of Inaccessibility marks the point on Antarctica that is furthest from the
ocean. At 3718 meters above sea-level it is in the Australian zone and seldom
visited.
In December 1958 Soviet scientists responded to the US's construction of the
Amundsen-Scott station at the South Pole by building a research station at the
Pole of Inaccessibility.
They fixed a plastic X to the roof before they left, two weeks later. Today, after
years of snow storms, the plastic X is the only visible part of the research station,
the rest buried deep under the layers of ice.
What is X?

The village of Čížov is a tiny settlement between the historic town of Vranov nad Dyjí
and the city of Znojmo in the Czech Republic. Čížov is situated in the flats above the
Dyje valley. Walking out of the valley, one comes across a dead straight asphalt path
leading towards this village. Walking to Čížov, the nature of the straight path is soon
confirmed. A tall metal watchtower becomes visible, and then, in the village, the fence
comes into view, perhaps 200 metres long, with wooden T-shaped poles, lined with
now rusty barbed wire, both horizontally along the fence, and vertically at the top.
A similar fence is also found in Devínska Nová Ves, a borough of Bratislava, the capital
of Slovakia, but is just a few metres long.
What are these fences?

In this photo, you can see Pope John Paul II forgiving
Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turkish assassin, in an Italian prison cell,
after an infamous incident.
Agca has described himself as a mercenary with no political
orientation, although he is known to have been a member
of the Turkish ultra-nationalist Grey Wolves organization.
On December 27, 2014, 33 years after his crime, Mehmet Ali
Agca publicly showed up at the Vatican to lay white roses
on the recently canonized Saint John Paul II's tomb.
What infamous crime had he committed?
74. 23
In the year 2000, it was impossible to avoid the question “_____ _____ ____ _____
_____?”
Apparently, “______” aren’t exactly who we thought they were. We thought that it
was possibly about a club filled with ugly girls. Apparently, it isn’t about
_____ or girls.
Here we thought it was about badly-behaved, misogynistic men talking about
how the girls at a club aren’t pretty enough, and it’s actually written about those
kinds of men! It is actually about female empowerment. Its about shutting down
cat-callers.
What “question” am I talking about?
80. 25

X is a slogan used to express determination to defend a position against an
enemy. It was most famously used during the Battle of Verdun in the First World
War by French General Robert Nivelle and also appeared on propaganda posters.
It was also used during the Spanish Civil War.
A very famous fictional fantasy character used it in an iconic scene in a 2001
movie.
What phrase am I talking about?
92. 29
X, originally a noun (1560s), from Italian ________(through Middle French), literally "of a cave", is
a word which originally referred to an extravagant style of Ancient Roman decorative art
rediscovered and then copied in Rome at the end of the 15th century. The word first was used
of paintings found on the walls of basements of Roman ruins. These "caves" were in fact rooms
and corridors of the Domus Aurea, the unfinished palace complex started by Nero after
the Great Fire of Rome in CE 64, which had become overgrown and buried, until they were
broken into again, mostly from above. Spreading from Italian to the other European languages,
the term was long used largely interchangeably with arabesque and Moresque for types of
decorative patterns using curving foliage elements.
Since at least the 18th century (in French and German as well as English), X has come to be used
as a general adjective to describe something, and its usage is different from what is described
above. In art, performance, and literature, however, X may also refer to something that
simultaneously invokes in an audience a feeling of uncomfortable bizarreness as well
as sympathetic pity.
Give X.

X was in a relationship with Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail, who subsequently broke up with
him. Tobi used to wear a deodorant called ______ _______; the band's singer Kathleen
Hanna(who was jealous of the relationship), used to talk about X having Tobi's scent on
him, which resulted in a peculiar graffiti in X's room one day. As Hanna herself explained,
she ended up in X's apartment one night and "smashed a bunch of shit. I took out a
Sharpie marker and I wrote all over his bedroom wall - it was a rental so it was really kind
of lame that I did that," she said. "I passed out with the marker in my hand, and woke up
hung over." Six months later, X phoned Kathleen to ask her if he could use some of her wall
scribbles as song lyrics. "I thought, how is he going to use ‘____ _____ ____ _____ ______' as a
lyric?" she added.
He did use the wall scribbles, resulting in one of the most iconic rock songs of all time.
Which song? And who is X?

During World War II, the U.S. Navy operated from hundreds of isolated airfields
located on atolls in the Pacific. Naval Construction Battalions (Seabees) carved
these fields with excavators and tractors along on the edge of dense jungle and
these heavy equipment operators often had to fight as they built—Japanese
holdouts could come barreling out of the tree line at any time to attack them in
an effort to disrupt the war effort.
In response, US Navy Capt. Stanley Martyn Haight designed a last line of self-
defense for these operators, something they could wear while on the job and
have at least a hope of fighting off a close range attacker. Hence, the Segley OSS
was invented.
What was the most iconic use of the Segley OSS?
104. 33

In the book “Quidditch Through The Ages” by Kennilworthy Whisp (J.K. Rowling
actually), Whisp mentions in the first chapter, how the flying broomstick emerged.
He asks, “Why didn’t we choose to produce flying barrels, flying armchairs, flying
bathtubs-why brooms? Why didn’t we adopt the X, so beloved of our Eastern
brethren?”
X is also mentioned in other parts of the Harry Potter series, when Arthur Weasley

The idea of ‘X’ing is ancient. In the 16th century, a X was very different from our
modern perception and stems from the medieval 'ceremony of the void'. After
dinner, the guests would stand and drink sweet wine and spices while the table
was cleared, or ‘voided’. During the 16th century, guests would no longer stand in
the great chamber whilst the table was cleared and the room prepared for
entertainment, but would retire to the parlour or ‘X’ing room.
Today, ‘X’s serve many purposes from training sessions, to formal business
dinners. Business ‘X’s are a popular way to strengthen bonds between
businessmen and their partners. It is common that a X is organized at the end of
an academic conference.

The Roman historian Jordanes provides an important source of knowledge of the X in his Getica, a semi-
fictional account written in the 6th century. Jordanes describes the migration of the X from
southern Scandza (Scandinavia), into ________ – believed to be the lower Vistula region in
modern Pomerania – and from there to the coast of the Black Sea.
In the 3rd century the X crossed either the lower Danube or the Black Sea, ravaged
the Balkans and Anatolia as far as Cyprus, and sacked Athens, Byzantium, and Sparta. By the 4th century
the X had captured Dacia and divided into at least two distinct groups separated by the Dniester River:
the Thervingi (led by the Balti dynasty) and the Greuthungi (led by the Amali dynasty).
The X dominated a vast area, which at its peak under the King Ermanaric and his sub-
king Athanaric possibly extended all the way from the Danube to the Ural Mountains, and from
the Black to the Baltic Sea.
