Danvers, Massachusetts in the late 19th century. Construction. The design plans focused
on buildings that had long and meandering wings with plenty of small private rooms,
ample sunlight, and very little direct views from one patient‘s room to another.
• The emphasis in his design was to provide private and removed spaces for patients to
recover without being packed in with other patients, removed from natural light and
airflow, or otherwise made to feel constrained or caged.
• They also, inadvertently, set the stage for the kind of spooky trope that is firmly
embedded in our culture today. The long rambling hallways, the prolific number of
rooms, and the sense that one could get lost in the giant labyrinthian buildings was very
unsettling to visitors. The building was demolished in 2006.

But once you walk in and enter the inner courtyard, you find yourself in the middle of a

o It was initially intended to be shaped in the form of an elephant, as conceived by a

172. It originated in the lush jungles of South America, where the rhizome, or root-like stem,
was revered for its magical properties and used for a wide variety of medicinal
purposes. Natives of the Peruvian Amazon grind up the rhizome to treat epilepsy and
other nerve disorders, while Secoya Indians in Ecuador use it to treat fever and the flu.
In Colombia, it is used as an antidote for snake bites.
Legend has it that Christopher Columbus first encountered this, along with
squash, beans, and maize, when he landed in the Bahamas.Though Columbus sailed for
Spain, the Portuguese are credited with its widespread diffusion along with other
Mesoamerican crops in Europe.
The Portuguese probably acquired it through trade with settlers in Spanish colonies or
with the Spanish mainland. They dispersed it widely, bringing the plant to their colonies
in Angola and Mozambique. It‘s now used in one quarter of the world‘s cuisines, and is
ubiquitous in Portuguese restaurants and kitchens as a marinade or condiment.
