between the group's dowdy appearance and surroundings, and their
grandiose name amusing.

 Syldavia is a fictional country in The Adventures of Tintin, the comics
series by Belgian cartoonist Hergé. It is located in the Balkans and has a
rivalry with the fictional neighboring country of Borduria. Syldavia is
depicted in four books, and referenced to in one.
 The Muslim and Ottoman influences drawn in the scenes depicting
Syldavia indicate that Hergé took inspiration from the country X to
create Syldavia. King Muskar XII, the fictional King of Syldavia bore a
resemblance to King Zog, the then King of X, and even the flags look
alike to some extent.

 The story goes that Lord Sandys, the Baron of _________ had been the
Governor of Bengal, and had taken a liking to a strong recipe he had
found during his time in Bengal. He visited the chemist shop asking for
the recipe to be made up. Lea and Perrins made an extra jar for
themselves, but found that they did not like the concoction and stored it
in the cellar. Some time later they retasted the preparation, which had
undergone fermentation by that time, to discover that it was delicious.

of coffee. In the late 1700’s, one variety of coffee beans became
extremely popular in Europe, and these are still among the best type of
beans that nature has to offer: Xs. Now the term is used to refer to a type
of coffee preparation popular all over the world.
 The X coffee beans were named for the port of X in Yemen, where the
beans were shipped from. It was the Ottoman Turks, who began
occupying Yemen in 1536, who originally began exporting the beans
through the port of X, which involved a complicated trade route to Suez

 The Truth of Transubstantion involves the method by which the communion
wafer received during a Catholic service would be transformed into the flesh
of Christ. The priest would hold the wafer and say “Hoc est corpus meum” (this
is my body), and so it would be, as per their belief.
 Among other differences, Protestants did not subscribe to this view, and only
considered this practice to be a symbolism. They subsequently ridiculed the
Catholic church for continuing to believe so, to the extent that the Protestant
King James I had a clown in his court who would prefix his magical tricks with
the incantation “_____ _____”, in apparent mockery of the practice. The phrase
caught on, clearly.

of-focus parts of an image produced by a lens. Differences in lens
aberrations and apertures shape causes some lens designs to blur the
image in a way that is pleasing to the eye, while others produce blurring
that is unpleasant or distracting (“good” and “bad” X, respectively)
 X occurs for parts of the scene that lie outside the depth of field.

 The Battle of Haldighati (18 June 1576) between the Rana of Mewar, Maharana
Pratap; and the Mughal emperor Akbar's forces, led by Man Singh I of Amber
led to a Mughal victory and significant casualties among the Mewaris but
failed to capture Pratap, who escaped.
 Perhaps the most famous tale in connection to this battle is that of the
Maharana’s faithful horse Chetak, who made the escape possible. Chetak as
well as all the other horses employed in battle by the Mewar army had a
peculiar characteristic armour, involving a certain attachment. This invariably
helped them survive the battle thus increasing the chances of victory in the
largely cavalry based military.
 What was this characteristic armour? How was it beneficial?

skin," Munch himself always claimed it showed nothing more than "just a
woman kissing a man on the neck".
 The painting was first called “X" by Munch's friend, the critic Stanisław

as "a man who has become submissive, and on his neck a ______ X’s ____.“

constrained writing, a book with restrictions on how it can be written.
The word “c a d a e” is itself a representation of this main restriction,
while cadenza is a solo passage in music. In addition to the main
restriction, the author attempts to mimic portions or entire works of
different types and pieces of literature in story, structure and rhyme. For
example, his tribute to Poe’s famous “The Raven”, with which he starts
his book, is as follows:

 X foods are those that conform to the Jewish dietary regulations of kashrut (dietary
law), primarily derived from Leviticus and Deuteronomy. For example,
the Torah permits only land animals that both chew the cud and have cloven
hooves. Four animals, the hare, hyrax, camel, and pig, are specifically identified as
being forbidden because they possess only one of the above characteristics.
 While most such foods are prefixed with the word “X” to indicate their accordance
with prescribed regulations, with X salt a common misconception occurs. It’s not
because of Jewish dietary guidelines that X salt got its name.
 There is nothing necessarily “non X” about regular salt at all.
 More appropriately, such non-iodised salt should be referred to as “X-ing salt”. But
certain salt companies labeled the boxes of this coarse salt “X salt” rather than “X-ing

 Hours after Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was to give
his speech to Congress the next day, and although the trip from the White House to Capitol Hill was
short, agents weren’t sure how to transport him safely.
 The White House did already have a specially built limousine for the president that he regularly used,
but it wasn’t bulletproof, and the Secret Service realized this could be a major problem now that the
country was at war. US government rules at the time restricted the purchase of any vehicle that cost
more than $750. It was pretty obvious that they weren’t going to get an armored car that cheap, and
certainly not in less than a day. The federal government did already have in its possession a car that
just might fit the bill, which had been sitting in a Treasury Department parking lot ever since it had
been seized years earlier.
 This car was a sight to behold. It had been painted black and green so as to look identical to Chicago’s
police cars at the time. It also had a specially installed siren and flashing lights hidden behind the
grille, along with a police scanner radio. To top it off, the 1928 Cadillac 341A Town Sedan had 3,000
pounds of armor and inch-thick bulletproof windows.
 FDR finally used this car, and it performed so well that he kept using it until his old car was fitted
with identical features.

 From early 1980s until the early 1990s, American Express was known for
cutting its interchange fee (also known as a "discount rate") to merchants and
restaurants if they accepted only American Express and no other credit or
charge cards. This prompted competitors such as VISA and Mastercard to cry
foul for a while as the tactics "locked" restaurants into American Express.
Capitalizing on this elitist image, American Express frequently mentioned
such exclusive partnerships in its advertising.
 A group of restaurants in Boston stopped accepting American Express, while
accepting and encouraging the use of Visa and Mastercard, including some
that were exclusive to American Express. The rationale was due to far lower
fees as compared to American Express' fees at the time (which were about 4%
for each transaction versus around 1.2% at the time for Visa and Mastercard).

 Joaquin Murrieta Carrillo, also known as the X of the West or the X of El Dorado, was
a Sonoran forty-niner, a vaquero and a gold miner who became a
famous outlaw in California during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s.
 The popular legend of Joaquin Murrieta is that of a peace-loving man driven to seek
revenge when he and his brother were falsely accused of stealing a mule. His brother
was hanged, his young wife gang raped and Joaquin horsewhipped. Swearing
revenge, Joaquin hunted down all who had violated his sweetheart. He embarked on a
short but violent career that brought death to his Anglo tormentors. The state of
California then offered a reward of up to $5,000 for Joaquin "dead or alive."

  • 214.   X foods are those that conform to the Jewish dietary regulations of kashrut (dietary law), primarily derived from Leviticus and Deuteronomy. For example, the Torah permits only land animals that both chew the cud and have cloven hooves. Four animals, the hare, hyrax, camel, and pig, are specifically identified as being forbidden because they possess only one of the above characteristics.  While most such foods are prefixed with the word “X” to indicate their accordance with prescribed regulations, with X salt a common misconception occurs. It’s not because of Jewish dietary guidelines that X salt got its name.  There is nothing necessarily “non X” about regular salt at all.  More appropriately, such non-iodised salt should be referred to as “X-ing salt”. But certain salt companies labeled the boxes of this coarse salt “X salt” rather than “X-ing salt”, and the name stuck.  ID X. What really is X salt, then? 10

  • 220.   Hours after Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt was to give his speech to Congress the next day, and although the trip from the White House to Capitol Hill was short, agents weren’t sure how to transport him safely.  The White House did already have a specially built limousine for the president that he regularly used, but it wasn’t bulletproof, and the Secret Service realized this could be a major problem now that the country was at war. US government rules at the time restricted the purchase of any vehicle that cost more than $750. It was pretty obvious that they weren’t going to get an armored car that cheap, and certainly not in less than a day. The federal government did already have in its possession a car that just might fit the bill, which had been sitting in a Treasury Department parking lot ever since it had been seized years earlier.  This car was a sight to behold. It had been painted black and green so as to look identical to Chicago’s police cars at the time. It also had a specially installed siren and flashing lights hidden behind the grille, along with a police scanner radio. To top it off, the 1928 Cadillac 341A Town Sedan had 3,000 pounds of armor and inch-thick bulletproof windows.  FDR finally used this car, and it performed so well that he kept using it until his old car was fitted with identical features.  Why was this car lying in the Treasury Department?/Who was this car seized from?  Images on the next slide. 12

  • 228.   From early 1980s until the early 1990s, American Express was known for cutting its interchange fee (also known as a "discount rate") to merchants and restaurants if they accepted only American Express and no other credit or charge cards. This prompted competitors such as VISA and Mastercard to cry foul for a while as the tactics "locked" restaurants into American Express. Capitalizing on this elitist image, American Express frequently mentioned such exclusive partnerships in its advertising.  A group of restaurants in Boston stopped accepting American Express, while accepting and encouraging the use of Visa and Mastercard, including some that were exclusive to American Express. The rationale was due to far lower fees as compared to American Express' fees at the time (which were about 4% for each transaction versus around 1.2% at the time for Visa and Mastercard).
