A project called ROC Café opened in Salford to provide youths ages 11-16 a place to socialize on Friday evenings and reduce anti-social behavior and crime. While some were skeptical, figures showed a dramatic drop in anti-social incidents since it opened. A local security guard reported fewer issues with drunken teenagers around his store since the café started and believes it will help prevent underage drinking and crimes in the future.

1. A project has been set up in Salford to help prevent anti-social behaviour and drunken
related crimes. ROC Café open its doors to 11-16 year olds every Friday evening, at the
Magdalene Centre, in Winton from 6:30pm till 8pm. Volunteers say this is a place for youths
too meet up, socialise, take part in activities and just have fun without having to roam the
streets getting into trouble.
A lot of people within the community don’t believe this new project will help, and could be
difficult to achieve.
Matt Jones, a spokesman from City West has high hopes for this project; he said that “We
believe all of our customers have the right to feel safe in their communities which is why we
are committed to tackling anti-social behaviour and its causes. The ROC Café is a great
example of how to tackle anti-social behaviour to other communities”
Figures have shown that since opening his café, there has been a dramatic drop in anti-
social behaviour in the area.
I recently spoke with Victor Keighley, a security guard at a local supermarket and asked, do
you get a lot of drunken teenagers hanging around the store?
