A memory leak in an application deployed on the cloud can affect the availability and reliability of the application. Therefore, to identify and ultimately resolve it quickly is highly important. However, in the production environment running on the cloud, memory leak detection is a challenge without the knowledge of the application or its internal object allocation details. This paper addresses this challenge of online detection of memory leaks in cloud-based infrastructure without having any internal application knowledge by introducing a novel machine learning-based algorithm Precog. This algorithm solely uses one metric i.e the system's memory utilization on which the application is deployed for the detection of a memory leak. The developed algorithm's accuracy was tested on 60 virtual machines manually labeled memory utilization data provided by our industry partner Huawei Munich Research Center and it was found that the proposed algorithm achieves the accuracy score of 85% with less than half a second prediction time per virtual machine.

Entropy is also essential in the fields of information and communication theory. During this lecture for the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, lecturer Andrea Goulet discussed the application of entropy-related concepts in two communication systems: software and collaborative teams. She examined how concepts that help us understand systemic statistical disorder, such as ergodic systems, Lyapunov exponents, Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy, and Shannon-entropy can help us optimize for both software quality and innovation. She also provided several domain-specific models: Lehman’s Laws and Conway’s Law for software, as well as new models from her own research that relate to entropy and innovation. Entropy helps us understand the world and achieve great things. There is an underlying beauty in its principles that we can use to advance scientific discovery. When we understand the subtleties related to balancing surprise and structure, we increase our chances for effective collaboration and finding novel solutions to complex problems.

The presentation will outline key concepts that led to the dark silicon such as Moore’s law and breakdown of Dennard scaling, followed by an overview of current and upcoming CPU accelerators. The focus will then shift to vector units and the specifics of vector programming. Attendees will be introduced to registers, a range of vector operations, and methods to develop branchless algorithms such as sorting networks. The session will conclude with an overview of the new Java Vector API and how it was already picked up by projects to do AI inference (Llama 2) and vector search (AstraDB and Cassandra).
