Instron's annual R-Day event allows employees to work on innovative projects for 24 hours. Originally a two-day event where employees collaborated in conference rooms, R-Day has evolved into a company-wide activity where people in different departments work on projects relevant to their roles. An example project from engineering was light-weighting low-capacity grips to reduce weight and costs. Moving forward, challenges include developing processes to bring projects from concept to market and obtaining senior management buy-in for R-Day initiatives.

The Functional Innovation is an integrated approach to creative ideation and problem solving which incorporates aspects from several well-known ideation and problem solving techniques. FI developed out of a research study that involved analyzing 30,000+ recent innovations and 10,000+ highly cited patents in order to identify common patterns and develop useful heuristics.
In the 1960s, Swiss Physicist Fritz Zwicky developed the method of ‘Morphological Analysis’ for complex problems. Around the same time, Soviet Scientist Genrich Altshuller formulated a method for systematic problem solving after reviewing more than 40,000 patent abstracts. FI methodology includes elements derived from these two approaches. It has also been influenced by the ‘Design Thinking' process introduced by Herbert Simon and the ‘Creative Problem Solving’ method pioneered by Alex Osborn.

This study uses behavioral theory to examine how performance and slack affect R&D expenditures and innovation rates in 11 large Japanese shipbuilding firms from 1971 to 1996. The results show that:
1) R&D intensity increases when performance decreases relative to aspirations or when organizational slack increases.
2) The rate of launching innovations decreases when performance increases relative to aspirations, and this decrease is more rapid for higher performance above aspirations.
3) The study emphasizes including decision-making variables related to risk-taking when examining innovation, rather than only focusing on knowledge management.
Agile Software Development (Monash University - Guest Lecture series)
I was invited by Chris Gonsalves (Associate Dean Student Engagement) and Mehran Vahid (Lecturer, Faculty of Information Technology) to present a guest lecture to roughly 200 students @ Monash University on Agile Software Development (June 2016).
Since the students had already covered the theory of Agile, Scrum and RUP, this talk focussed on the real world aspects of Agile in practice and used SEEK as a baseline example.

Energy efficiency has been important since the latter part of the last century. The main object of this survey is to determine the energy efficiency knowledge among consumers. Two separate districts in Bangladesh are selected to conduct the survey on households and showrooms about the energy and seller also. The survey uses the data to find some regression equations from which it is easy to predict energy efficiency knowledge. The data is analyzed and calculated based on five important criteria. The initial target was to find some factors that help predict a person's energy efficiency knowledge. From the survey, it is found that the energy efficiency awareness among the people of our country is very low. Relationships between household energy use behaviors are estimated using a unique dataset of about 40 households and 20 showrooms in Bangladesh's Chapainawabganj and Bagerhat districts. Knowledge of energy consumption and energy efficiency technology options is found to be associated with household use of energy conservation practices. Household characteristics also influence household energy use behavior. Younger household cohorts are more likely to adopt energy-efficient technologies and energy conservation practices and place primary importance on energy saving for environmental reasons. Education also influences attitudes toward energy conservation in Bangladesh. Low-education households indicate they primarily save electricity for the environment while high-education households indicate they are motivated by environmental concerns.
