Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. What have you learnt about the
conventions of magazine
production and what progress have
you made from the student mag?By doing my genre research, I was able to look at different classical magazines and learn the importance of different conventions. For
example, the sell line being around the model to highlight the models importance within the magazine. I was also able to understand key
components of magazines such as a button and headline which summaries articles but are also used as a way of advertising. I also
noticed that it is key to have a barcode, masthead, strap line, price and issue date.
I have definitely made improvements from my school magazine as I was able to add more conventions. For example, my school
magazine is very plain as I did not know how to use Photoshop. However, as the course progressed, I taught myself how to use it and
applied these techniques to my magazine making it look more professional.
I did not include many sell lines in my school magazine compared to my front cover, this may be due to me not feeling as comfortable
with Photoshop than I do now. Also, I only used one button instead of two as I believe using more than one button on a Classical
magazine begins to take away its simplistic theme.
3. Think about every aspect of both
productions and scrutinize every
decision you made
Compared to my Classical magazine, the front
cover of my school magazine does not include
many conventions. This magazine does not
include a barcode or price as it was going to be
published in school for free. This then draws
more audience to the magazine, allowing it to
gain more recognition. The two sell lines are
school related with one being how to change your
uniform. This then gets the attention of both
males and females as everyone wants to be seen
as cool.
4. This magazine includes all of the
conventions of a Classical magazine. It
also includes an image of the free CD
that will come with the magazine. This
magazine includes a barcode as I
expect it to be sold in newsagents. The
heading and masthead are both clear
and bold making the magazine come
across very appealing and eye-catching.
5. Think about the production as a
journey from the initial sketching to
the final product
Due to the amount of research and planning, I was able
to produce a Classical music magazine which I and my
target audience agreed on. The research and planning had
a huge role in this. This is due to the research and
planning allowing me to understand my genre in depth
and also be very organized with what I am meant to be
doing.
6. What have others said about
your final magazine?
I do not listen to classical music.
However, this magazine loos like it gives
me all of the latest information about
upcoming artists within the classical
music industry. This magazine definitely
fits its target demographic audience
through the layout and colour scheme.
The rich colour scheme
throughout the magazine
definitely help highlight
the genre. As a fan of
classical music, I can see
why the magazine is
simple. I like it. It is very
effective.
I love the fact that this magazine is
female dominated! Although males may
not want to purchase this magazine, it
gives females a chance within a
predominantly male music genre. Also,
the name of this magazine is brilliant!
