1. Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the
full project?
2. Technical Skills
While creating my preliminary task magazine I learnt technical skills such as using Photoshop
CS6. I used the magnetic lasso tool to cut around the photo of the student, and I used the
filter gallery to manipulate the school logo. For my music magazine I learnt how to download
fonts from the internet and upload them to photoshop, such as the masthead and the title. I
also learnt how to manipulate images in iphoto, such as the photo in the double page
spread that I made black and white, and how to integrate text by analysing how other
music magazines do it. I also learnt how to use a digital camera, such as framing shots and
working with natural lighting.
3. Codes and Conventions
Through researching other music magazines such as NME and Rolling Stone, I learnt
how to organise information on each page to make it interesting and attractive but
also legible and easy to process. I chose to have a structured contents page
influenced by NME's contents page, however I have put articles and their page
numbers into different themes such as Music and News that I created from my
research questionnaire, instead of in numeric order.
4. Branding
Through creating my music magazine I have learnt about branding, both the
magazine and the artist. When I made the college magazine I did not have the
intent of selling it, however the music magazine is supposed to have large audience
and other magazine that it has to compete with. I emphasised on the front cover
and in the double page spread that Manaal is a new artist and this issue of the
magazine is to spread the word of her career.
